2 ext4 queries
by Petrus de Calguarium
1. Is it safe to use ext4 for important data? I Do mean ext4, not ext4dev.
2. Will a partition formatted as ext4 need to be reformatted down the road, as ext4 matures, or will one presently formatted as ext4 house the data correctly and in accord with future enhancements to ext4?

X on tty1 in Rawhide/F10
by Will Woods
Hi folks,
If you're running F10Beta/Rawhide, you may have noticed already, but I
wanted to make sure everyone knows this is intentional:
X HAS MOVED FROM VT7 TO VT1.
GDM specifically starts X on tty1, and upstart does not start a getty on
tty1 in runlevel 5.
Other display managers might need to be changed to match (or they might
Just Work since tty1 will be the first unused tty).
If you maintain one of the other display managers, it would be good to
make sure that your packages do the right thing.
Thanks!

Oops. F10 Beta ate my laptop
by Daryll Strauss
Hi Folks,
I had a chance to install F10 Beta on a new laptop a couple weeks back.
Because it was a laptop, I chose the encrypt disk option. I was updating my
system with the latest code as it arrived, usually the same day. Everything
has been great, until today.
Last night another 50 or so packages updated, and since it included a
kernel, I shut down. This morning when I booted the laptop, it starts up and
shows that it is booting Fedora 9.92. I see the blue/white bar appear and
make progress.
Normally it would stop shortly after this starts and prompt me for my
password. That never happened. Instead it the blue bar progressed all the
way to the right side of the screen, the Fedora 9.92 text turned white, and
then the it just sat there.
I tried hitting escape during the process, but that brings up an empty
console with a blinking cursor, but no text. So I don't seem to have any
more diagnostic information available.
One other caveat in terms of complete disclosure. I was running the nVidia
drivers. With my previous updates that hasn't been an issue. The kernel
updates and I don't get X when the system restarts. I then reinstall the
nVidia package and reboot the system where everything comes up normally. I
don't believe this is related to the problem, but I hate when my customers
leave details out of their requests. Nothing else is particularly unusual
about the system.
I'm not sure what to try next. If there's more diagnostics I can collect,
let me know. If someone has a suggestion as how to get my laptop back to a
bootable state, that would great. It would be a PITA if I had to reinstall,
but not the end of the world.
Let me know,

It is a regression. Why in heck would switching from from tty0 to tty1 I see X then switch to tty2 see console again? There's a good reason for it being on tty7, so it's out ot the fscking (especially when X CRASHES on VT switch back to X :P [See ATI, composite mess and all that jazz]).
Yes, even if there is a workaround, a lot of us 'old' folk are programmed from the old days of seeing X on tty7.
This just seems pretty stupid to put it on tty1 *WHEN* TTY2 is console! text, X, text, text, text.... c'mon people think smart!

Window / Screen question
by Nathanael D. Noblet
Hi,
This isn't a fedora question specifically, however just thought I'd
run it by to get some feedback.
I've had a multi-card/multi-monitor setup for a few months now. It
has been a royal pain. (Only the closed drivers can handle it
unfortunately). I was talking to the radeon/ati driver people and have
been informed that multi-card setups don't get much love from either the
driver developers or upstream/xorg. So I've figured I may move from 3
monitors back to 2 larger (24") monitors. So after that history, here
comes the idea...
I'm wondering if it is possible to have 'fake' monitor
borders/dimensions. So you instruct xorg/gnome/xinerama or whatever that
the 1900 pixel width is 2/3rd + 1/3rd. If I were to click maximize
within either of those imaginary borders, it would maximize to that size
instead of the 1900 px width. If I double clicked, it would then go
fullscreen...
Does this sound at all useful? Opinions / critiques...

Telnet Failure With F-10 Beta
by Janina Sajka
I tried (and failed) to start a telnet install of the F-10 beta on two
x86_64 machines. Furthermore, logs on the dhcp server do not indicate
that the target machine ever requested an ip address.
Is there a bug here? Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

F10 builds targetted for dist-f10-updates-candidate
by Jesse Keating
In order to properly prepare F10 updates, all F10 builds are now
targetted at dist-f10-updates-candidate. This is a setting in the
'common' directory of your package modules, so you'll want to make sure
you're using an up to date common.
The buildroot for dist-f10-updates-candidate is comprised of dist-f10
content, which means builds done in dist-f10-updates-candidate
will /not/ automatically be usable in the buildroot. You'll need to
request a buildroot override in order to do build sets.
Also, any build that we break the freeze for and tag for Fedora 10
release will also be available in the buildroot.
I have locked the dist-f10 tag so that no more builds can automatically
get tagged. If you have a build that fails due to a locked tag, you can
either ping releng, or manually tag it yourself for
dist-f10-updates-candidate:
# koji tag-pkg dist-f10-updates-candidate <build-n-v-r>
