Gno fonts in GNOME (not pango problem)
by Mark J. Reed
For some reason I have no fonts in GNOME. It's not the pango problem;
my pango.modules is fully populated and world readable, as are all the
directories it references. But when I do a cleanup and start gnome from
scratch, all text disappears as soon as it gets to the globe+arrow logo.
I assume from this that it's a locale problem, but I have no idea where
to go from there. I also get empty .gnome2/share/?(cursor-)fonts/fonts.dir
files - or actually, containing just the single character '0'. Dunno
if that's related or if it just means I don't have my own custom fonts.
Any help?

RE: Random Screen Blank on startup all the Time.
by Ragone_Andrew

This happens to me about 3-4 times when I first boot X.org. It's like
it goes into screensaver mode. However, I can recover by just
pressing any key, and the monitor will turn back on. It will turn off
my monitor about 3-4 times but then after that it goes back to normal
and never happens again.

Subject: Random Screen Blank on startup all the Time.
To: fedora-list(a)redhat.com
I have posted to Bugzilla but have not gotten any replies. I am
wondering if anyone is familiar with this problem:
Description of problem:
I have an error where the screen blacks out [seems to turn off all
output to the monitor] after a certain period of time whether I am
activly using my system or it is idle. I need to either restart the
computer to regain functionality or SOMETIMES i can Ctrl-Alt-F7 or F8
and it will switch back into the X session I had been running.
Otherwise Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesnt even bring up the shell,
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesnt restart X, and the keyboard seems to not
function [i know this because no keyboard lights go on for Num/Caps
lock]. It occurs after my installation of FC2 x86_64 today and I
origianlly thought it may be the wrong monitor that I specificed, but
I returned to generic and it still occurs. I am running a PCI ATI
All-In-Wonder Radeon [i believe 7000 series] on a FC2 AMD Athlon64
system with x86_64.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
default FC2 x86_64 release
How reproducible:
Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install FC2 on x86_64
2. Boot up X and logon
3. Use the computer for 10-20 minutes or let it be idle and will find
the screen go blank
Actual Results: Screen goes blank. Usually keyboard is unrepsonsive
to X restart commands or Shell keycodes.
Expected Results: X continue to function normally. No reason for the
screen to go blank. The drivers and config SEEM to be correct as it
takes time for this issue to occue.
Additional info:
Have tried to reconfigure the monitor display. Didnt work.

FC2: Question about hotplugging
by Jean-Rene Cormier
Hi, I have a laptop with an Intel Pro Wireless mini-PCI card and I
installed the IPW2100 driver and I can do a modprobe ipw2100 and it
loads the module and the firmware but when I boot the laptop the module
gets loaded automatically but it can't find the firmware. After Fedora
is done booting I can do an rmmod ipw2100 and then a modprobe ipw2100
and the module will load and it will find and load the firmware. I asked
on the IPW2100-devel list and someone suggested to me that maybe it was
because the modules gets loaded before fedora starts hotplugging. I just
looked at the init scripts and hotplug seems to start in the rc.sysinit
so obviously it should start before networking. Is there a way I could
make sure hotplugging gets started earlier than the networking in the
boot process? Anybody had a similar problem?

Firewall - Very limited Access - suggestions
by Kevin F. Berrien
I'm intersted in building a bastion firewall for the following
sistuation. Have a closed network (police dept). There are no crosses
to the internet. However, we'd like VERY LIMITED access by the Windows
DC server for the following: Windows update (via SUS), Symantec AV
updates, VNC/or remote desktop connection to 1 or 2 workstations on our WAN.
Thus, I want to limit all traffic except various protocols/ports between
specific IP's/URL's.
Certianly FC and iptables can do this, does anyone recommend a
configuration utility, start off scripts, etc? Should I be looking
more into LRP (now defunct), etc? My iptables knowledge is not great
(did it years ago), so some configuration utility would be great, and my
co-workers isn't experienced in this area at all.

using libmilter, milter-spamc and spamassasin
by John Walsh
Hi,
My intension is to get spamassasin to process ALL the emails that pass
through my sendmail,
even those forwarded on to external email addresses through
/etc/mail/virtusertable...
IF YOU HAVE AN ANSWER AT THIS POINT, PLEASE JUMP IN AND TELL ME WHAT TO LOOK
AT.
Otherwise...
I have sendmail working fine, a large virtusertable working fine, aliases
working fine, ...
I don't currently use procmail, and don't think I want to. All my email goes
into /var/spool/mail/*
After much web searching, I found out that the normal use of spamassasin is
through procmail,
but I don't want to use this method because it would miss out all my
virtusertable forwarding.
After a bit more web searching, I found:
http://www.snert.com/Software/milter-spamc/
which looks like it is exactly what I want - although it does not state if
its processing happens
before or after virtusertable is applied ?
BUT, to use this milter-spamc, I need sendmail to be configured with the
Milter API enabled,
and to build libmilter too.
So my question(s) are:
1) is sendmail with FC1.0 compiled with the Milter API enabled ?
2) if not, is there anything I need to consider in downloading the source
and installing from
that - other than following the normal instructions ?
3) has anyone else used libmilter in FC1.0 - and any issues ?
4) does the Milter API process emails before or after
/etc/mail/virtusertable ?
5) has anyone also used milter-spamc - and any issues ?
6) if there is a bigger advantage to using procmail (inplace of aliases and
virtusertable), then
please let me know so I can switch to this method.
Thanks,
John.
ps. if Fedora sendmail is not configured with the Milter API enabled -
please can it be ?
As it is supplied without the source (I believe), would it be better to have
this feature
enabled by default ?
