Problem booting under F16
by Joe Zeff
Recently I upgraded my laptop to F16 using preupgrade. This morning, at
a convention, I did a system update that included (I thought) a new
kernel. The next time I booted, the system hung, with no output. I had
to power-cycle to try again, this time getting error messages: it
couldn't find libcrypt.so.1 and there were a number of failures of
systemd-remount-api-vfs. I power-cycled again, and hit the space bar to
enter the GRUB menu. There was one F16 kernel, the upgrade, and the
latest F14 kernel, which worked.
After several experiments, I found that libcrypt.so.1 is provided by
glibc-devel, so I told yum to install it, which brought along some other
things I'd thought I'd had. Alas, it didn't fix the boot failure.
Although this isn't my main box, I'd like to keep it working as well as
I can, and would prefer to be using an F16 kernel if I'm running F16, as
I appear to be.
Also, as a side note, I'd tried using the fedorautils and made the
mistake of adding the color terminal, finding that I don't like it. How
do I reverse this?

Recomend a colour laser printer
by Steve Searle
After battling for a couple of years with my cheap Dell 1320c printer
I have decided to throw in the towel as I can't get a 64bit Linux driver
for it.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced network colour laser printer
that works well with Fedora 16 x64? Let me know what you have if it
works well.
Thanks
Steve

Fedora 16: quota command for NFS shares
by Rich Boyce
Hello list,
In Fedora 14, running 'quota' whilst in an NFS share showed the user
quota for the share. In Fedora 16, it does not. Any idea how to get this
working?
Thanks,
Rich

Bug 648732 – Intel wireless broken on 11n for many users
by Lawrence E Graves
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=648732
Based on this bug report, is there a fix for this problem. I am unable
to install my nvidia drivers because of this bug. I don't understand it
at all. Every time I installed the drivers and reboot this is the
results. I don't know why these two programs are in conflict but it
seems they are. Will somebody take a look at this problem.
I am running Fedora 16/64-bit on Dell 9400 Inspiron with a Quadro
FX2500m video card.

KVM virtual machine transfer query
by Sanjay Arora
Hello all
I have a question. Can a kvm virtual machine, a linux or windows guest,
generated of fedora, be transfered to a rhel machine and started? or vice
versa?
Please note, I am not talking of live migration. Just transferring files
generated on one OS & running on the another? And what if hardware of the
machines is different?
With best regards.
Sanjay.

question on gdb
by Paul Allen Newell
Community:
I am trying to run gdb on a program that is crashing and I am getting
messages of:
+++
Missing separate debuginfos, use debug-install glibc-2.13.2.x86_64
libgcc-4.5.1.fc14.x86_64 libg++-4.5.1.fc14.x86_64
libstdc++-4.5.1.fc14.x86_64
---
Googling is not giving me anything that I either understand or trust.
Querying yum with -list isn't giving me any insight.
Is this message asking me to add something to the compile line or
something to gdb? And, in either case, what is it asking for.
I'm hoping someone on this list has run into this debugging C++ and can
clue me into where I need to look.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Gnome and Xfce don't play well together
by Aaron Konstam
This happened in F15 and I thought I was just ignorant.
Now that it has happened again in F16 I realize it is a software
problem.
When Gnome is configured for a user and then the user tries to use Xfce
they find that the Xfce is corrupted in various ways. Namely:
1. when Firefox is run the top menu choices can not be used. You click
on Edit for example and you see the Edit menu, When you move the cursor
down the menu and the menu disappears.
2. Gnome display image bleeds into Xfce.
3. Evolution after awhile has the same problem as Firefox.
4. Running the Software Update program causes the update window to be so
large that you can't see the options like "Install" at the bottom of the
window,
5. You can't set up multiple workspaces.
etc., etc and so forth.
In F15 the corruptions were slightly different. Foe example the menu you
got when you clicked on the Desktop was the Gnome menu not the Xfce
menu.
Other strange things happened like you get a view of the home directory
immediately when you log in to Xfce,
It would be interesting to hear whether others have seen similar
effects.

Printing at 600 dpi makes everything twice as big
by Jonathan Ryshpan
When I print a page with Image Quality -> Resolution at 300 dpi
everything works fine, but when I print at Image Quality -> Resolution
at 600 dpi everything prints twice as large as it ought to with
resolution (I believe) at 300 dpi. The page that's printed shows only
the upper left quarter of the image that should be printed. I've had
this problem in the past (Fedora-15), but only with the Gimp and
Gutenprint; now it happens all the time.
System Info:
4 CPU x86_64 hardware
Fedora-16 with all updates installed
KDE 4.7.3
cups-1.5.0-22.fc16.x86_64
Brother HL1440 Printer
Default printer resolution is 300 dpi
Any suggestions?

F16: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and MTP
by Steven F. LeBrun
Has anyone succeeded in mounting the SD Card built into the Samsung
Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Fedora?
It wants to use MTP for the USB connection and I have not found the
right combination of software to correctly mount the tablet as a file
system. The MTP mounted tablet causes RhythmBox to crash when it tries
to connect to the tablet as a music player.
I have read some information about mtpfs. Does anyone know where this
software can be found?
MTP == Media Transfer Protocol.
