I have since discovered that the problem originates from Grub loading
the wrong kernel which is another problem I have to solve.
I run two Linux distros on this computer (in addition to Windows 10),
Debian Sid and Fedora. I have been installing grub from Debian into
/dev/sda, the main disk. I suspect the problem exists because the Debian
version of update-grub (to create the new grub.cfg file) sorts the
Fedora Kernels in the wrong order, putting the recovery entry first,
then the oldest kernel followed by the newest kernel. So just hitting
the Grub entry for Fedora on booting results (sometimes) in the oldest
kernel, or occasionally the recovery entry.
I'll have to take this up with users on the Debian list.
BTW, systemd-modules-load.service doe not make any mention of
directories with lists of kernel modules??
Sorry for the noise.

module load failure on boot
by Frank
I am running a freshly updated Fedora 31. I noticed this morning that
the systemd-modules-load.service failed. I saw it on boot
and later in the journal log.
There is no explanation why it failed, just the notification.
[frank@franklin ~]$ systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service
● systemd-modules-load.service - Load Kernel Modules
Loaded: loaded
(/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-modules-load.service; static; vendor
preset: disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Tue 2019-12-24 10:44:34
EST; 5min ago
Docs: man:systemd-modules-load.service(8)
man:modules-load.d(5)
Process: 750 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load
(code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Main PID: 750 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
CPU: 9ms
How can I debug this ?
Thanks

How to fix "dnf autoremove" on my system?
by Manuel Reimer
Hello,
I seem to be one of the users who has a somewhat "corrupted" package
database.
The system has been only upgraded so far and was initially installed
with "yum".
If I run "autoremove", then I get the following (long) list where surely
not everything can be removed.
Can someone please prepare a command for me to mark the "relevant"
packages as "explicitly installed"?
List: https://pastebin.com/uanFQiAV
Thanks in advance

Problem printer to Brother WiFi printer
by Adam Mercer
Hi
Recently install Fedora 31 and I've been trying to setup my printer
with not much luck. It's a Brother HL-L8350CDW connected to my WiFi
network. I can print to it without issue from a Mac and an Ubuntu
machine on my network but can't get it working under Fedora.
I can set up the printer and it all appears to work but whenever I
print it appears to print the document is never print and no error is
generated. The documents just go into black hole.
I've followed all the instructions from Brother to install the driver:
https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll83...
and various FAQs:
https://support.brother.com/g/b/faqend.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll8350cdw_...
but I'm unable to print. I know it's possible as my Ubuntu machine can
print so I'm wondering if there something different going on here
related to Fedora. Has anyone get any ideas on how to debug this?
Cheers

I made an error in sending my reply directly to Robert. Here is his response to what I've said.
I then sent him an off-list reply with a screen shot to indicate where the "negative" selection resides.

Updated info about disabling tracker related processes?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I have recently begun to use again gnome session and I have reinstalled
nautilus.
I see that nautilus depends on tracker and so the reinstall put in tracker
and its things
And this morning in my F28 system with SSD disk (I don't imagine on a
normal sata based environment) I had to kill tracker-extract and
tacker-miner processes because they hogged my cpu for several minutes..
Searching with google I found different info about disabling (or at least
calm down) tracker, but they all seem not updated, in the sense that
several commands/services are not present in my f28 environment.
Any pointer about configuring and/or disabling it?
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca

xsane scan coming up black background
by Robert Moskowitz
Kind of like a reverse image. All is black except around any text which
is speckled such that you can kind of see the text.
It was working fine, and then a week ago went bad. I thought it was
because I did an update and did not restart things. I rebooted over the
weekend, and it is still doing this.
I linart, but grey gives the same results.
I am running xsane via HP Device manager.
Anyone else seeing this problem?

character display quality difference between users.
by home user
(fedora-30; Gnome 3.32.2)
When logged in as en.user, characters displayed in terminals, in window
titles, in the settings tools, and other places are displayed with good
quality.
When logged in as cn.user, characters displayed in terminals, in window
titles, in the settings tools, and other places are displayed with
obviously worse quality. They look like they're made of small blocks.
Both accounts have the same region and language settings. In the
"Tweaks" tool, both accounts have the same "Appearance" and "Fonts"
settings. What is causing the difference? What else should I check?
thanks,
Bill.
