I followed various links which says that you need to start nscd but that automatially gets started once authconfig is started.

Pls Suggest.

When I try logging into client it says:

login as: somuth
somuth@10.209.37.77's password:
Last login: Tue Jan 19 21:45:17 2010 from 10.209.37.146
id: cannot find name for group ID 505
[somuth@389-Client1 ~]$
[somuth@389-Client1 ~]$

any idea what could be the issue?

The above says that there is no group with gid 505,  If this is an ldap user , user somuth should be a member of group whose gid should be 505,

if you have created this user in Directory server, and specified gid=505 while creating the user,  then you should also create a group with gid=505
