The original announcement[1] on the github blog says it can be done and that the images
can be rendered in-page. I also found a blog with an example of how to address the images
in markdown [2] since there isn't a terrible amount of explicit help from github on
the topic.
Rendering images "in page" is fairly easy with Markdown on GitHub.
It's how the screenshot is shown in-line for the repo README page here:

For the "where to keep the images", maybe we just need a new GitHub
