Ideas for improving aeolus

After some discussion on list[1] about project direction, it seems there
was general agreement that the project could be made more maintainable,
reusable in other projects, and potentially easier for new contributors
to get started with. One approach to this is to look at our current
codebase and identify areas that could be extracted into more modular
chunks. This could take the form of rails engines, rack middleware,
libraries, or $something-else. Following is a list of ideas that a small
group of us brainstormed. We wrote up the basic ideas, and now want to
get the community involved for feedback and so we can refine the designs
(or even toss any out that end up not making sense).

Need newer DC 0.5.0 in F16 repos

Hi Michal,
Would be ok with rebuilding DC 0.5.0 (-10 or something), and pushing to
Fedora 16 testing? (then to Fedora 16 stable when ready)
The existing DC rpms in Fedora 16 are ancient (0.5.0-2), and causing
upstream Aeolus nasty problems with hwp/instance matching.

Message: Fix aeolus user home directory on upgrade
Previously the aeolus user's home directory was set to /var/aeolus.
This was changed to /usr/share/aeolus-conductor in commit 923f894.
However this only catches new installations; if the aeolus user
previously existed (e.g. upgrade) then the home directory would not be
updated. This catches that case and ensures that old installations
using the old home directory are updated.

[PATCH conductor] Fix broken permission migration.

The migration which adds denormalized permissions has to iterate over existing
permission records to create the DerivedPermission objects. Unfortunately,
now that the user groups code is in place, the rails permission model is
incompatible with what's in the database when the create_derived_permissions
migration is run. Normally, this sort of thing is resolved by overriding
the model classes in the migration to remove validations and other model
components that may be broken by future code changes.
In this case, we have more extensive needs at the model level, so sorting
through all of this is much more difficult. After chasing down phantom
migration failures over several hours, I decided to do the simpler thing here.
I've just moved the code that iterates over Permissions and creates Derived Permissions
from the CreateDerivedPermissions migration to the final migration that
modifies these models for user groups. Now, if a user tries to run a set of
migrations on an existing database that includes both of these, the derived
permissions are simply created later. If a user has already successfully
run the CreateDerivedPermissions migration but not the newer one, then the
iteration over permissions to update derived permissions will be run
again, but this operation is safe to run more than once, as it compares
derived permissions in the database with what _should_ be in the database
for a given set of permissions -- so if you run it more than once, it just won't
make any db changes on subsequent runs.
