Gentlemen,
To follow rubygem tradition we have decided to come up with a more
catchy name for Image Management Engine. Because, well, Image
Management Engine is pretty dull. This task is harder than it seems.
It turns out the creative side of my mind has been locked away in a
little box. I'm hoping one day I'll find the key, but right now it's
looking grim so I'm relying on you guys for inspiration :)
We're open to all suggestions wackier the more memorable :). One thing
we would like is do is keep in with the Cloud or Conductor theme.
Any ideas?

imaginary land (the virtual machine). You get to Oz via Kansas. So, you

Monkey" and let people ask.
I thought of "Emerald City" too, but I'm not sure exactly how that
relates, other than that the Emerald City has gates, and the IME is kind
of a gateway to Oz in a sense.

I like your thought process here. Unfortunately:
whirlwind, tornado, hurricane are api-twister (which might get confused
with twister) are all taken.
cyclone is free though.
Also sticking to the wind theme. How about wind tunnel? Or turbo-fan :P

Yeah, wacky ones are memorable and I can
envisage some pretty cool logos
off of "winged monkey" ;)

there, and a few specific ones.
* Kinds of clowns (or names, bozo, biny, etc) - how fitting would that
be?
* Fish, starting with halibut, of course.
* Roundhouse, to go with the train/conductor theme
* Something about a loading dock, to go with factory theme
* Coco-slug - (coco=CrOssClOud, slug = similar chunk naming to heroku
and openshift), take off of coco-puffs, could be a whole cereal
theme....
* Something about an airport (another possible theme), hanger,
airtower, hugh probably has more than I do here..
* Vaporware! (we should have used this from the beginning..)

Tin Man somehow sounds like a good name, though I'm struggling to think
of an actual connection.

I still like this line of thinking, but "Coco-slug" makes me think of an
infected coconut with slugs coming out of it. Katello also has a -slug
component or two. We'd talked about "CroCoBits" which sounds a little
more cereal-y and a little less infested. Plus the images are "bits".
When I ran cross-country in a former life, it was "XC". We could borrow
that here. xci = Cross-Cloud Images?

Also: "Publicist" -- used to manage one's image. (Obviously for another

like a good line of thinking. (I must disclaim that The Wizard of Oz is
a distant memory for me and I'm going by the Wikipedia page.)
How about the term "updraft", associated with tornadoes, which conveys a
sense of movement up towards the clouds? Though the name sounds kind of
dumb.

Heh, it sounds like we're thinking up solid names, but
none of them will be easy to remember "<name> = Image
Management Engine".
Something like "Picasso" or "Rembrandt" have obvious
"image" associations, even though its a different sort
of "image". Probably easier to remember. ;)

Personally I think it would be pretty cumbersome to do on list as it

Just a late name suggestion...
"Conveyor"
... because Image Management Engine runs inside ImageFactory, just like a series of
conveyor belts run inside a real-life factory. It creates a very simple level of
abstraction that helps a user understand the relationship between ImageFactory and the
Conveyor IME.
As a bonus, you could continue the Fordist-era theme when naming other new parts of Aeolus
infrastructure (As a matter of fact, we already do with "Assemblies" and
there's also discussion about integration with "Foreman").

Gents,
So, as your probably already aware. We discovered a Forklift app that
is in the same space as IME. So it would be unwise to select it for our
name.
I was going to chose the 2nd most popular name on the vote list, but
since that was "I don't care!", I thought a revote was in order.

that we found that fake forklift safety video about Klaus the
Staplerfahrer (lift driver).

As I said, I am not opposed to Gabelstapler being in the list, I just think it
is far too long. And sure, throw in Klaus too. I have to say though,
I am liking more and more the 1/2-jokig suggestion I made of 'IME' a
la iwhd. It woudl require no work to rename any code and would simple
be a shorter name for the gem. To sloranz's concern, it would keep
'image management' in the name, making it easier to find via google
(or whatever second-rate other search engine someone may use).

"IME" works for me too.
Doing a quick Google for "cloud" and "ime" turned up this, but it

The thing is, as Martyn said, the number 2 was "I don't care", which
is not a valid choice. I know people were being funny, caring enough
to vote but not to actually make a choice, but clearly we wont really
use it. And as I said in my last mail, several of the other choices
were already taken, leaving a rather anemic list. I am not going to
let us just choose the 'best of the rest'. If we are going to the
effort of coming up with a better name than we have now, it should
actually be better. If this means we need to postpone the rename
until we come up with something that has broad support, so be it. Our
current name, while dull, is reasonably descriptive at least.
