Speaking engagement at Northeastern University report

I've just returned from a speaking engagement at Northeastern University
here in Boston MA., USA. This was for the ACM students, Association of
Computing Machinery.
Even though it was midterms time, we had a good 30 students show up for
the talk. I started with a quick history of Linux and GNU and a brief
outline of what makes a Linux distribution. I then went on to compare
and contrast some of today's popular Linux distributions, going over
package management, init systems, governance models,
commercial/community aspects, etc... I then went further in detail as
to what makes up Fedora, and why I feel that Fedora is a very strong
project to contribute to.
After that I did about 30 minutes of question and answer. Many good
questions were asked, such as what is RH/Fedora's relationship with
CentOS, how do we compete with Ubuntu, what return on RH's investment
in Fedora is there, how does the Fedora work make it's way into RHEL,
what is RHEL's release model, and a few other things.
All in all I think it was a very good engagement. The students were
very knowledgeable and interested. Many expressed interest in getting
more information, and potentially interning or otherwise contributing
to Fedora. Every student picked up a Live CD of Fedora 8 as well.
I hope to do more things with Northeastern in the future. They have a
very cool program and some very neat students. Linux is slowly making
it's way into their infrastructure, mostly led by student efforts.

Fedora Belgium

CLT08 Preparation

one year is gone since we had our FedoraBooth on
CLT07<http://fedoranews.org/cms/node/2757>
and after a warm up last week on FOSDEM once again we have a booth on CLT08 in
the middle of CentOS and OpenBSD

CLT is the most important FOSS(only) related event besides Linuxtag Berlin in
Germany with around 4000 visitors. As the organizer points out the motto this
year is "Free Knowledge and Free Culture" and the main attraction is the OLPC
presented by a group olpc.at and SkoleLinux.
So i updated my knowledge about OLPC, to ask the right questions and know my
words about the deep hints about the relation of OLPC and the Fedora Project.
Booth build up will start tomorrow at 06:00 pm - and sadly we are only three
Ambassadors RobertScheck and JensKuehnel and i, we have LiveDVD´s, the "I am
Fedora" Shirts with the old Logo, Generic Posters on Truckplane, Posters from
FrancescoCrippa who gave us some Posters on FOSDEM and a big Fedora Flag.
Jens will give a talk - i could not see his talk on FOSDEM so i have another
chance. I covered many events in the past and truly this is the best
organized event in europe! Another hint - they have the best social event i
know!
So if you can come this year - be there - and if not, don´t miss it next year.
RobertScheck and i are save arrived at CLT and build up the booth - like last
year we have a table and a wall. We carefull decorated with the Posters we
have and then we hung a Fedora Flag on a wall above the booth - hope we don´t
get in trouble with that ;-)
We get our Identity Cards and meal tickets - and will enjoy the start tomorrow
morning at 08:00 am.
Many potential contributors are waiting to be hired ;)

Developers Conference) will be in Boston, MA from June 19-21. It will
be held in the same location, and in parallel to, the Red Hat Summit
2008.

FOSDEM 2008 Trip Report or "How to turn Tam Tam into something so dirty that it makes a German blush"

Having just returned home from FOSDEM in Brussels, several things are
very clear to me:
- Fedora is lucky to have such a large base of dedicated and motivated
Ambassadors in EMEA. Their enthusiasm showed throughout the entire
weekend, from the handmade stickers and pins, to the beautiful high
quality posters, and the matching ambassador polo shirts. I am truly
proud to be a part of the Fedora community, and specifically, a member
of the Fedora Ambassadors.
- FOSDEM is an extremely popular, well attended event. However, it
really needs to find a new home, as it has significantly outgrown the
space at the ULB Campus. It was truly 10 pounds of awesome in a 5 pound
sack, people literally in gridlock throughout the entire event. We gave
out hundreds of Fedora 8 DVDs, and ran out several hours before the
event was over on Sunday.
- It was good to see the CentOS folks come out again as our partner.
Even though I may strongly disagree with some of their "community"
participants, I support their mission wholeheartedly.
- I have high hopes for RPMFusion in the Fedora 9 time frame. Even
though they cannot solve any problems in the patent encumbered, DMCA'd
United States, they provide a useful service to the rest of the Free
World.
- Steak Americain is not American. French Fries are not French.
Ukrainian dessert wine is AWESOME (thank you again kad, that was such a
nice gift).
- Tam Tam (one of the OLPC activities) makes animal noises. Somehow, I
ended up making an incredibly filthy joke about that which made most of
the ambassadors near by blush and laugh out loud. I apologize again.
- For 1 Euro, the BSD dominatrix will spank you. For 2 Euro, she will do
it properly.
I spent most of my time at FOSDEM at the Fedora booth, talking with
people about the technical details around Fedora, and generally feeling
bad for only speaking American (I believe I was the only Fedoran who
only spoke a single language)! The OLPC and the Asus EEE were huge
attention draws, and posters seemed to be the "swag" most in demand
(many people were disappointed that we had no posters for sale). A lot
of the attendees were relatively new to Linux, but there were also a lot
of experienced Fedora users who stopped by to thank us and ask about
Fedora 9. I spent some time talking about the next RHEL, and how Fedora
can help shape that direction, which was very interesting to the CentOS
folks.
This was my second year at FOSDEM, and I felt very welcomed by the
locals. With the NPO established, it can only get better from here!
