installation problem on PPC64

Hello to everyone, tried to install fedora core 4 on a logical partition on a IBM PPC64 system "OpenPower720" using only virtual devices.(virtual ethernet, virtual scsi, virtual console provided by a so called VIO-Server) That's what I did so far: - burned the first ISO-image on CD and booted from this media. - prepared an ftp-server as an installation soure - can start installation via virtual serial connection at boot prompt with : "linux askmethod" - able to key in IP-information and FTP-server information. -> On the FTP-Server side I can see the ftp connection is working - I can see anaconda starting, but failing soon with "Error bad argument --virtpconsole: unknown option". - Found a bugzilla entry #160573 which states this issue is resolved with latest anaconda-package - so I downloaded latest anaconda and anaconda-runtime rpms from http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/ppc64/F… - unpacked anaconda files with rpm2cpio anaconda-xyz.ppc64.rpm | cpio -id and rpm2cpio anaconda-runtime-xyz.ppc64.rpm | cpio -id into a temporary dir /tmp/RHupdates - copied this temp dir to <ftp-root-dir>/Fedora/RHupdates - additionally made a cramfs image (ext2 image didn't work either); cd /tmp/RHupdates; mkfs.cramfs . updates.img - copied this image to <ftp-root-dir>/Fedora and to <ftp-root-dir>/Fedora/base - started installation again at the boot prompt with: "linux askmethod" - but installation fails like before, anaconda updates seem to be ignored. - same with boot prompt: "linux askmethod updates" -> this time an additional dialog appears asking for the updates source, but only cd devices are selectable Any ideas what's wrong? Is this update.img/RHUpdates thing still supposed to work. Is something wrong with my ftp setup ? Shortly after starting the installation, the message "local installation media detected" is displayed. Tried the same via NFS -> same problem. FC4: CD Not Found - The Fedora Core CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives

Hi All, I am hitting this problem when i burn my custom CD, i know this is a list for anaconda development but i have a few questions(near end of mail) about anaconda working which i think will be best answered here. Following is what i am doing 1> I am making a custom Fedora Core 4 CD1 with only the packages that i want, i have removed the unwanted packages and generated new hdlist using genhdlist from anaconda-runtime 2> When i try and use this custom install tree via NFS based install all works and the install is successful 3> When i take the same install tree make and iso out of it using mkisofs -r -J -T -v -V "My Custom CD" -c isolinux/boot.cat -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -o ../images.iso -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -1 . and burning this iso onto the disk using nero or Raxio etc, (i am burning the iso image and not the .iso file as data). 4> I boot from above made CD, it asks me language, keyboard type and installation methond, on selecting Local CDROM it give me ":CD not Found" , The fedora Core CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. 5> I checked alt-3 which says trying to mount CD device hda 6> alt-4 gives me <7>ISO 9660 Extension: Microsoft Joliet Level 3 <4>Unable to load NLS charset utf8 <4>Unable to load NLS charset utf8 <7>ISO 9660 ExtensionsL RRIP_1991A 7> I have tried all the known workarounds to this problem like ide=nodma , cdnodma , disabling smp etc but none have worked. Following things that i have already done 1> I have created checksum of the CD using implantmd5iso in anaconda-runtime, however even after saying linux mediacheck it did not do media check. 2> Done all work arounds like ide=nodma, cdnodma etc , but none worked 3> Used -r to set proper permissions on the iso. 4> Mounted the iso in the system and it works. Following is the hardware that i am using Dell PowerEdge SC 430, but i have tried the same on my sony laptop VGN-S56GP and i get the same error. Questions: 1> When and why does anaconda gives this error message 2> What does anaconda expects to see. 3> What can i do to debug this further. Any help on what could be the possible reasons of trouble is greatly appreciated. Thanks -Hariharan

/tmp/scsidisks and drive ordering

Hi, I'm trying to enforce drive ordering during installation by unloading and reloading the modules I want in the %pre of the kickstart. That all seems to work well except that anaconda seems to be remembering the old disk ordering somehow and subsequently tries to initialize partitions on the wrong disk. I notice that the loader creates a /tmp/scsidisks file which obviously does not get changed when I play with the modules but it seems like that file is only consulted to figure out whether a drive is removeable. My question is does anyone know how I can achieve what I'm trying to do and or can anyone explain where anaconda proper gets its SCSI drive list from? [PATCH] 00/04 add iSCSI install support to anaconda

Hi Jeremy - Following are patches adding iSCSI install support to anaconda, patched against anaconda-10.90.25, and tested with FC devel snapshot of Jan 8. I have had problems completing testing (getting to the point that I have a valid root file system on an iSCSI partition) on various machines due to different problems being hit (I'm trying to get details for the various problems, lack of serial line support is making this difficult), but have been able to get iSCSI devices recognized and to start an install to a Netapp iSCSI attached target. Without iSCSI initrd support, the end result is currently not too useful. Patch does not currently support a text install, nor kick start. 01-base-anaconda.patch: add iscsi flag to anaconda 02-loader2.patch: add iscsi flag to loader2 03-scripts.patch: add changes to include iSCSI modules and commands 04-iscsi-modules.patch: iscsi python code for actual install support -- Patrick Mansfield

Anaconda-Kadischi patches

Hi. I noticed the Anaconda release in development has changed from 10.91.0 to 10.91.4-1 Attached for the devs are Anaconda patches for anaconda-10.91.4-1 needed to utilize LivCD mode in Anaconda for Kadischi. If you can review them, and see if we can get them into later Anaconda that would be excellent. (Those that are unaware, Kadischi is a Fedora Core LiveCD building tool.) Thanks! J. Hartline

Hi. I am currently working closely with kadischi, and this has a bit to do with anaconda. Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction, provide some guidance, you know. Kadischi (LiveCD tool) users experience exceptions in Anaconda when using /media/cdrecorder for instance for arg[0] in kadischi. I have implemented a small section in it to check for method.startswith('cdrom://') to try and alleviate this problem, well CdromInstallMethod of image.py always needs more values than provided, if a user does use 'cdrom://' for arg[0] in kadischi. I'm curious if this is just going to be fruitless, the reason users should use cdrom:// is because if they don't kadischi will default to nfs:/ assuming it is a local filesystem type repository of packages. Either way this is done nfsinfo in writeKS fails or CdromInstallMethod class fails with needing more than one values to unpack. I can provide, if someone requests more detailed information on this. Basically my method is not large enough, when using cdrom:// however with kaidshci buildstamp style configuration where it gets 'productPath', it is correct, when it is 'Fedora'. Can you guys shed some light, those who know anaconda well? Fortunately I am not at my wit's end with it, but anyhow.. I am sort of at a crossroads of my own opinions what could be done, but they are not expandable solutions, merely workarounds, and wouldn't hold water tight in the long run. Thanks guys. J. Hartline

Set anaconda AND system default language

First of all, sorry for my english :-) I'm customizing FC4 install CDs. I need Anaconda to start in spanish as default language (language selection screen must be hidden). I've followed this: https://www.redhat.com/archives/anaconda-devel-list/2005-August/msg00082.ht… It works very well. The installation proccess starts in spanish and language selection screen is hidden. But when installation finishes and I boot in the installed system, default system's language is still english. I mean, /etc/sysconfig/i18n is OK, but GDM, Gnome, etc. is in english. Using system-config-language the problem is fixed, but obviously this is not what I want. How can I set default system language to spanish during installation? What do I have to modify in Anaconda code? Thanks in advance. -- Christian González G.
