Details on Raspberry Pi 5 support timelines

Hi Folks, I finally got some time over the weekend to dig into Fedora on the RPi5. The TL;DR is that there won't be any way of even basic support officially for F-40 GA. For those interested in more details..... The main pieces missing from the upstream kernel to boot to a login prompt over serial is appear to be the following: * The SoC pinctrl driver * Support in the mmc storage driver for the SoC variant * Minor bits for the gpio driver I'm not aware of any efforts to get anything upstream, I've not seen patches on lists etc. We have the firmware (bcm/u-boot) pieces in place in Fedora 40 and the kernel will start to boot and you get serial console output except you end up at a dracut prompt due to lack of storage. I am considering doing a Fedora kernel with patches in copr, and probably a F-40 remix minimal image, to enable minimal boot so other low level developers can use it as a basis for further investigation for things like upstream development. I don't have a timeline for this yet but I suspect late April. At the moment this looks like it'll be mSD, WiFi, serial console support and not much else. I've not looked at PCIe, the RP1 chip, or any other peripherals at all. I'll reply to this thread if/when I have any further updates, feel free to reference it elsewhere. Until there's either a kernel or kernel+image unless you can contribute to upstream kernel pieces there's probably nothing that can be done like "testing". Disabling serial console in u-boot

I have a couple of Raspberry Pi 4Bs with a couple of different GPS HATs. Both GPS HATs work similar - they use the main serial port pins to transmit the NMEA sentences, several every second once they have GPS sync. Since u-boot stops on serial input, this keeps them from booting unattended. With a fresh Fedora 41 install, I see u-boot start and then get the EFI boot menu, which stops until I hit ENTER when the GPS HAT is attached. I tried setting bootdelay to -2 but that seems to stop the EFI boot menu from autobooting no matter what (e.g. pulled the HAT off and it still stopped there). I also changed stdin/stdout/stderr to remove serial, that didn't seem to have any effect. I assume people don't have these problems with the "official" Raspberry Pi OS - do they build u-boot with different options from Fedora that allow fully disabling the u-boot serial console mode? -- Chris Adams <linux(a)cmadams.net>

Raspberry Pi 4B+ testing

Hi all, I just noticed on my Pi 4B+ that display output on the second micro HDMI port (the one further from the USB-C power supply port) is corrupted. The first port is fine. The corruption is visible as rainbow halos around text during boot, and increasingly large areas of corruption after booting to a graphical desktop (green dots, color shifts, etc.). I can confirm this with the Fedora 41 1.3 RCs for both KDE and Workstation. Has anyone else seen this? I'm trying to rule out it just being a hardware fault with my unit. Brandon Nielsen

Rockchip rk35xx support

Hey Folks, So we've had issues with officially supporting a number of different platforms in Fedora directly and for a while I have been pondering how we can better enable these platforms to work better on Fedora. This isn't limited to rk35xx by any means, it's merely the first platforms I took the time to look at. What I've come up with is a copr repo with builds for those platforms that are very similar to the experience you get from the official Fedora builds. I am still working out the best way to integrate this with arm-image-iinstaller to make the experience as straight forward as possible. To try it you can do: dnf copr enable pbrobinson/u-boot; dnf install uboot-images-copr So with this first round it should work with 22 rk3588 based boards. I've actively tested the Rock5B (both mmc/SPI). To write a mSD card you can use the dd command below, for SPI the process is basically the same as the Pinebook Pro [1]. sudo dd if=/usr/share/uboot/rock5b-rk3588/u-boot-rockchip.bin of=/dev/XXX seek=64 There are rk356x builds as well but they currently have an issue and while you get the early firmware and initial Fedora the boot doesn't complete. I am working to fix this problem with the vendor. So at the moment they shouldn't be used. I look forward to hearing feedback and suggestions for improvement. Fedora KDE 41 RC 1.3 needs testing!

Hey folks, The candidate release compose for Fedora Linux 41 was released yesterday[1], and we need YOUR help to ensure Fedora KDE is the best this cycle! Kamil Paral provided some instructions on how to do this just after Fedora Linux 41 Beta went out[2] and that guidance applies here. In particular, we *definitely* need folks testing on AArch64 with supported ARM platforms[3], notably the Raspberry Pi 4 series.
