Project Status and Direction

Hey all, just wanted to send out a quick update on the project status. The release24 branch has been receiving patches, and is alpha quality. I'm looking for more users to check it out and give it a test. One of the biggest holdups to this release is the documentation. The 2.2.3 manual will need to be forked and updated with all of the new features in 2.4.0, such as: * Dynamic settings - no more needing to restart cobblerd when changing settings. * Better debian/ubuntu support (better preseed, more snippet support, etc.) * Support for bonded bridge interfaces (useful for virtual hosts) * OpenVZ support as a virtualization type * Web GUI improvements * Alpha support for MySQL as an alternate storage backend And probably a few more that I'm forgetting. So, if you're familiar with any of these features, take a look at the docs repo - any help updating the docs would be appreciated. Right now, a lot of the pages content was essentially just copied from the wiki, so there is a lot of cleanup left to do. Once the manual is forked, we're going to have to do that in two places, so it'll be easier to tackle now before we fork it. There are two primary goals on my road map right now: 1. Work towards adding support for IaaS platforms like OpenStack, Eucalyptus, etc. 2. Improve unit testing and continuous integration testing with Jenkins. Both of these goals require some dedicated hardware, so to help fund those goals I have created an Indiegogo campaign: http://www.indiegogo.com/cobbler24 This will be the only time I mention this on the mailing list, but I will put it up on the project home page and mention it via twitter. So any help in getting the word out will of course be greatly appreciated. Overall, I think the project has been moving in a positive direction, and the last 6 months have flown by since taking over as maintainer. Any comments or other feedback are always welcome. Thanks!

Cobbler uses DHCP instead of a static IP

Hi, We are using cobber to manage our machines for our satellite. Re are using satellite 5.5 with cobbler 2.0.7. Since our last upgrade, our VMWare Machines do not use the static IP anymore during kickstart. NOTICE NetworkManager: ifcfg-rh: Ignoring connection 'System eth0' and its device due to NM_CONTROLLED/BRIDGE/VLAN. Before the upgrade, this worked. We use this cobbler command to add the machine: cobbler system add --name=thename --profile=theprofilename --hostname=thename --kopts="ksdevice=eth0 umgebung=LAN" --interface=eth0 --static=true --mac=00:50:56:9b:2e:c6 --ip=6.7.8.9 --subnet=255.255.255.0 --gateway=3.4.5.6 --name-servers=1.2.3.4 What are we doing wrong? I searched for different combinations of cobbler, NetworkManager, DHCP etc. but I did not find any usable answer. I hope this is a cobbler problem. Cheers, Paul

Use ip instead of ifconfig

Cobbler import doesn't rsync

I've got several .iso images that I'm trying to import into a new Cobbler instance. When I do this: # mount -o loop /images/Fedora-17-i386-DVD.iso /distro # cobbler import --name=F17 --path=/distro --arch=i386 task started: 2012-10-22_085223_import task started (id=Media import, time=Mon Oct 22 08:52;23 2012) !!! TASK FAILED !!! # cobbler.log shows that the rsync apparently didn't run because the very next command fails. If I copy the rsync command from the log and run it manually, it works just fine every time, and re-running the cobbler import after the manual rsync runs to completion. installing debian 6 vm

Hi, It's been some time ago since I last played with Cobbler so there are certain things I've forgotten. Excuse me if I ask the obvious :) I'm trying to install a Debian 6 virtual (kvm). koan will destroy currently running vm

koan 2.2.3 will happily destroy the storage of a currently running or defined vm. Build and other networks with cobbler

Hi I am trying to setup cobbler in the following scenario: Cobbler server ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Has a "build network" which is non-routable and presented to all boxes Has small subnet management network (/27) which is used to access the box and do other related management tasks. Server that are being build ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Servers have access to the build network Servers are on there own specific management networks which is not in the same vlan as cobbler and with no iphelper installed. What I would like to happen: * The server that is being build should dhcp from the build network * The rest of the networking on the server is static and should be set statically. * The "normal" network aka management networking is vmxnet3 so won't work anyway because I am still using RHEL 5.8 for various reasons. It seems that cobbler assumes it has global access to all networks mentioned in server config, is this correct or do I have it wrong? I assume dhcp tag would come in handy here but not quite sure how to use it. The man page makes a cursory mention of it and then refers you to the wiki which have no mention of it. Thanks for the reply! In my understanding the snippet will be part of the kickstart file, but the installation stops before stage 2 so the new machine does not even get that far.
