Hi Design Friends,
In the last email I was inspired by the project name Laughlin and the phrase ' The whole is more than the sum of its parts.' I saw this as an opportunity to push the visual concept of cut and paste. Replication of the same simple shape to make a very complex design. How far can you push it. Something as simple as a line can be pushed pretty far. Here are some links:

The cut and paste concept would work with any shape. I am going to just take a simple line and push it. I did a pencil concept sketch for a line illustration idea I had. Anyone is welcome to pursue it with me.

One of the suggestions for visualizing the theme for Laughlin was,
"Something that can illustrate the emergence concept, like multiple

The work of Robert Laughlin, who "was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in
physics for his explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect.
Moreover he argues for emergence which is a concept that says 'The whole
is more than the sum of its parts.' Fedora is more than the sum of its
software."
Visually I think this concept could make a nice theme. It could be cool
to use objects or phenomena from nature to illustrate it. e.g., many
drops of water making a stream or whatnot. Do you have any ideas on how
we might visualize this?

I think the backdrop of atomos.svg is nice - with a bit of tweaking it
could make a nice abstract pattern.

No team meeting this week

Hi folks,
Sorry I flubbed up the meeting this week. We were supposed to have one
yesterday, but I have been traveling away from home and didn't get a
chance to send out a reminder email.
We're new to this, so hopefully we'll start getting consistent the more
we meet. I will send out a meeting reminder the night before or the
morning of our next meeting, which should be next Tuesday 7 PM UTC.

MgOpen Modata & accents

Luya's blog post tonight [1] reminded me of an ongoing issue we have -
our secondary font, MgOpen Modata, doesn't have basic accent marks (I
can't even write my own name in it.)
Do we want to consider switching to a different font that does? There
are more openly-licensed fonts than ever, far more than when we
initially decided to go with MgOpen Modata. I found this font that has a
similar rounded look (it's a wider and more widely-spaced font, but I
think that's okay) and it seems to cover all the basic accents including
acute, grave, umlat, circumflex, etc.:

It's called Quicksand. The author has said he has released it
'license-free' and commercial use is permitted. We would need to get in
touch with him and see if he would be amenable to releasing it under a
recognized open font license before we could include it in Fedora, but
he does seem responsive in the typophile forums [2].

Fluxbox style

Hi Design Team!
I am a long-time Fluxbox user and recent Fedora convert who miss an
official Fedora style for Fluxbox. I have been playing around with the
colour palette from the Icon guidelines available over at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/EchoIconGuidelines to create a
minimalistic (in the traditional spirit of fluxbox) yet appealing look
with a familiar "Fedora feel" to it. For speed and responsiveness, I
have chosen not to use pixmaps at all but will stick to the native
colour and gradient rendering in Fluxbox which is easily specified
with RGB codes.
However, I have a question:
The Clearlooks Metacity the Fedora icon themes clearly go hand in hand
in terms of the soft blue tones (are they based on the Tango
palette?). I am using the "Fedora Blues" for the windows and toolbar
in my draft but the colours look a tad bit off compared to icons,
scrollbar and other blueish widgets on the Gnome/Gtk desktop. So here
it goes: when creating a style from scratch like this with the aim of
inclusion in Fedora, should I prioritize an "official" Fedora
trademark palette (if there is one), which boosts the Fedora identity,
or the palette which integrates best with the default widgets and
icons (which I presume results in the smoothest experience for the
user)?

Hey Jef, Here's the stuff I had worked on for the design-bounty. I made the realese-notes banner smaller so that all four corners would be rounded (instead of the two on the left being chopped off). The minibar allows for more content on subsequent pages. I only kept the "features" bubble from the four-Fs since this document is all about new features - but it wouldn't be a big deal to swap it out with anything. Finally, Mo had mentioned getting some screenshots on the document. I pulled a picture of the BFO from the fedora Wiki and added a "dramatic" angle and drop shadow. I hope this helps! Let me know if you need help getting different headers into your OOo document (it took me a little while to figure out!).

- How far I can go with the fancy-schmancy designs. I don't want to overdo it, because that would not only look bad but also get in the way of readability and such (mchua already pointed out the background might conflict with a black and white version, which is why blackWhiteTest.png is there).
- What's the final format I should design for? Will it be on paper, pdf, do I need to keep the margins for any printers, things like that?
I'd love to hear what you guys think. All comments/questions/remarks are welcome!

A Few Questions (from the new guy :)

Hey guys!
I sat in on the meeting today and it was great. I also got a chance to check out the video nicubunu posted and the way you guys organize and run your group is awesome. I just had a few questions after the meeting I wanted to ask:
(1)Right now are we (as a group) primarily focused on designing wallpapers for the Alpha release of Laughlin? (And the alternate wallpapers too)
(2)If so, is there already an agreed-upon set of themes that we would like to focus on so that we aren't pulling in a hundred different directions (artistically speaking)?
(3)Is there a preferable format for these wallpapers? As in: are .svgs preferable to photos and edited pictures? Are we targeting a resolution or screen ratio or simply making a flexible image that can be adapted to a variety of settings?
Finally, I'm having a bit of trouble with the design service queue. It seems that almost everything, whether it is showing an owner or not, has already been worked on. Are there any simple (Quick & Easy) tasks I could work on? (The artwork wiki suggested that I could ask to be assigned a task, so here I am.) If there's nothing at the moment, that's quite alright, I'll happily work on the aforementioned wallpapers. :)
