tommed - new to design team opening letter
by Tom medhurst
Hi Guys,
My name is Tom Medhurst and I am a professional (in the paid sense) software
developer, musician, and writer.
I am new to Fedora but a die-hard Linux fan. I was driven to Fedora as I
became frustrated with the other distros as their communities were not
helpful, their support for my hardware was weak (Fedora is the only distro
I've got the ATI catalyst GPU driver working on!), and the loops you have to
jump through to give back to the community.
Fedora seems like a great project that I'd like to offer some of my spare
time to (not that I have a lot with two full-time jobs and an upcoming
band!).
I am not comfortable offering my services to the dev team _*yet_* as I don't
have the time to learn the system that well. But I am pretty comfortable
using Photoshop and GIMP, so would be happy to do some wallpapers, banners
etc.. (not icons though)
I also can also offer some guitar riffs or other musical sounds. I have
played guitar for 14 years, concentrating on modern and classic Jazz for the
last 5 years. I saw the TRAC case
#114<https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/114>and think I might
be of use here. I'd be really happy to develop a riff or
tune which became synonymous with Fedora! :)
Anyways, that's me!
Lastly, I created my Fedora account (on admin.fedoraproject.org) about 4
hours ago and have uploaded an SSH certificate. But I don't have access to
fedorapeople.org via ssh yet. Does that come after joining a group or should
it happen in a few hours after some CRON jobs have been run? Would be nice
to have a place to store resource files for this project!
If you'd take me; I'd be happy to join the art group and start contributing!
Many Thanks & Kind Regards,
Tom Medhurst

Anaconda, the comic book
by Máirín Duffy
Hi folks,
I found some neat comic templates from http://designcomics.org/ that are
public domain so I started putting together a comic strip of a user
installing Fedora - using Anaconda along the way - just to get a
high-level idea of the sequencing of screens and what might make sense
for a user at each stage.
The comics include some light mockups of each screen the user goes
through - they may not have all the necessary details but they'll give a
gist. The order may not be feasible in Anaconda today - I think that's
okay. We could probably start from how it would make most sense to a
user experiencing it, and then figure out the logistics once we're happy
with what we mapped out for the user... making some trade-off decisions
for feasibility when necessary.
I hope this makes sense? With a lot of the UI mockups so far we've been
doing deep dives on particular sections so I thought a more holistic
approach would help keep things in order.
The work-in-progress so far is here:

The Inkscape SVG source is available here:

What do you think? Do you see this as being a useful tool or a waste of
time?

18 January 2011 Meeting Minutes
by Máirín Duffy
Hey everybody!
Thanks for another great meeting yesterday! Here's the minutes:
Minutes:
http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-18/fedora-design.2...
Log:
http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-design/2011-01-18/fedora-design.2...
I also posted them to our wiki page here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design#Latest_Meeting_Minutes
Mo Summary:
Topic: Fedora 15 Wallpaper Proposal Selection
=============================================
• Fedora 15 Proposals:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F15_Artwork_Wallpaper_Submissions
• We unanimously decided to go with Emily's Nightingale Proposal
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F15_Artwork/Development#Winning_Concept)
• Emily's statement on the concept: "Inspired by the Emperor and the
Nightingale. Juxtaposes the systems created by man, and those created by
nature, thus a nod to the Gaia hypothesis."
• It's got a bit of steampunk in the mechanical bird, and it's got a
strong link to nature and Gaia. Birds are also a symbol of love
(lovelock). It's a layered concept!
Topic: GNOME 3 Wallpaper Integration
====================================
• We had several ideas on integrating the concept with GNOME 3
wallpaper.
• Proposal #1: Design a full suite of nightingale-themed artwork, and
also a version of stripes with nightingale accents to tie it in
• Proposal #2: have a day-night transition wallpaper that transitions
between nightingale wallpaper and stripes
• Proposal #3: have a splash of nightingale in stripes, have a splash of
stripes in nightingale. For example, emboss nightingale onto the
stripes.
• Proposal #4: keep stripes as-is, have a splash of stripes in
everything nightingale
• It seems we'll play this by ear and see how the mockups develop.
Topic: Nightingale Theme Development
====================================
• We scheduled a Fedora 15 Nightingale Alpha Wallpaper design-hackfest
at FUDcon to prep for Feb 1 due date on the FUDcon Tempe wiki page.
• Alpha wallpaper is due by February 1. Martin will package it up by
February 7.
• IDEA: Have 3-4 variations on the nightingale wallpaper that users can
pick between. Potentially transition between this wallpaper set for
every 15 min.
• Background on the concept: The emperor and the nightingale is a
fairytale by H.C. Anderson.
• It's about an emperor who loves the song of a nightingale, then a
mechanical nightingale is brought in and the real nightingale flies
away. Eventually the emperor gets sick and the real nightingale comes
back and comforts him and scares off Death, saving the emperor's life.
• Full story: http://hca.gilead.org.il/nighting.html
• Summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nightingale
• Rendering ideas:
- IDEA #1: if we took that kind of paper-cut-out approach like Little
Big Planet's artwork has we could use various kinds of stripes as some
of the textures
(http://www.gamingheaven.com/gamingreviewimages/littlebigplanet/pictures/L...)
- IDEA #2: maybe have the wallpaper drawn onto a stripe-textured
'paper'? like this
http://thepianomasque.deviantart.com/art/The-Goddess-of-Nature-137832044
• challenge #1 avoiding too high frequency / too high contrast
imagery... the wallpaper version needs to work well as a non-distracting
background
• challenge #2 an artwork style that can also be used as a graceful
accent on other pieces so we can try some of the gnome 3 integration
wallpaper ideas we talked about
• Inspiration: some inspiration links for textures, colors, motifs,
styles we might think about applying for the alpha wallpaper:

- http://submicron.deviantart.com/art/Pier-51-Midnight-Aqua-190830673
(too dark)
- http://stormmajki.deviantart.com/art/snow-187770321

- http://ruth-tay.deviantart.com/art/Visual-Paper-bird-185670881
• Approach: we would like more positive approach to technology vs.
nature, like the mechanical and real nightingales almost kissing each
other in the sketch. Something more uplifting than dark.
OPEN ISSUES
===========
• The Design Team blog isn't broadcasting to Fedora planet for some odd
reason so Jef's T-shirt post isn't appearing. Mizmo opened up a ticket
with Fedora infrastructure to get it working:

Reminder: F15 wallpaper submissions due tomorrow...
by Máirín Duffy
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F15_Artwork_Wallpaper_Submissions
I'm not seeing any proposals on here :( Here's the requirements for a
concept submission:
- Must have at least a sentence describing the link to the 'Lovelock'
codename
- Must have at least one sketch or mockup. This could even be the work
of another artist as an inspiration note, just make sure you properly
reference the work, and if you upload it make sure the work is under a
freedom-friendly license (e.g. Creative Commons).
The proposals are due by our meeting start time tomorrow, I think it's
1700 UTC (3 PM US EST).
I know you've got awesome ideas, so let's get 'em on the wiki page so we
can discuss them at our meeting tomorrow!

my 2 cents on F15 Wall paper
by twohot
Hi all,
I mentioned a thought that came to me, during our last meeting, about a
concept for F15 wallpaper. Since the idea is a little beyond me (for
now), I pulled my tablet and sketched something that might be of help.
Emily, you asked ... here it is:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:F15-wallpaper-mockups-00.png
The dripping lines represent glowing particles emanating from the
background to form life (flowers, birds GAIA, if you would, etc. ... but
not too concrete). Its vivid in my head but I can't seem to think of a
good route to reproduce it electronically. That's my disclaimer there.
I was thinking of blending the controversial wallpaper design to it
(subtly). I hope this rings a bell.
