Hi design dudettes and dudes,
The marketing team is working on launching a Fedora-focused online magazine [1] (similar to something like http://worldofgnome.org/ or http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/ ) for the Fedora Community. We have a WordPress install set up here for it (we're working on getting a better hostname):
http://wp-fedoramag.rhcloud.com/
This is pretty much a blank canvas for us to work with. Does anyone have ideas for how the magazine should look? Any ideas for the logo? (Should we follow the standard Fedora logo conventions for website or bend the rules [2] a little bit?)
We'll need some mockups for how we want this to look, and I'm happy to try my hand at implementing them as a WordPress theme (although if any of you have WordPress theme authoring expertise and wouldn't mind helping, that would be awesome!!!!)
Ideas??!

Alternatively (a little bit backwards but), we can research a bunch of WordPress magazine-style themes, pick out one we like, and mockup it up Fedora-ized (if that makes sense) and tweak it to fit. That might be the quickest path to getting something working.
While I'm sure we can get some budget to purchase a premium theme, I think it might be more fitting to stick with an open-license theme. What do you think?

Should be more lively, forcing the readers to give a try to each product of the community.

Hello all.
I'm actually developing wp themes, however, instead send several mockups (which will take me a lot of time) we can check some ideas from different themes on market (doesn't matter if they are paid or not) and I can build it with everything we like (please n weekends or nights).
I also recommend a site that I always use for inspiration, not all those themes are for wp, but we can use the ideas and make our own.
The development time once we have the idea (we can just take screenshots of the things we like and do a jpg mockup, I could start with it) the theme could be done in 2-3 days.
Do you like this idea?

Hey,
I came up with one mockup / idea for Fedora Magazine. This is based on the Arras v2 theme that is current installed on our wordpress (http://wp-fedoramag.rhcloud.com / http://demo.arrastheme.com/ )
http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/mockups/fedoramag/fedoramag-mockups-1.png
(the SVG is in the same dir for you to poke at, if it pleases you :) )
I'm not real happy with the main headline area with the Blacksburg photo - I think the text is soupy and hard to read. Any ideas on solutions?
I tried to stick to the theme pretty closely so it wouldn't be a ton of work to implement. I used Fedora Planet posts as content (except for the Blacksburg photo.)
Overall what do you think? Ideas?

I reworked it a little bit
http://artboard.cloud.fedoraproject.org/artboard/post/view/142
main reason is, that we should go for an design where the resolution is oriented for 780 px width. With the banner over a bigger size you will get trouble.
Maybe we should consider to use "WordPress Mobile Edition" which comes with an extra template for mobile devices

hey!
I like it, but I would probably would place a bit more of content and the text above the pic of the header, might be better with a different placing (maybe on center-right and a bit smaller, so the picture can be appreciated a bit better).
that design can be done from scratch too, so let me know when do you folks want me to start (so we can say that the theme was Fedora-custom jejeje)
See ya!

This is a really good idea. Although for sizable tablet targets, it may not be as much of a win, I'd think plenty of people read on small mobile devices like phones. Using a mobile theme for those devices makes reading much more pleasant!
maybe more than a mobile version a -Fedora-app- ? that would be fun :$

I worked some this weekend on an alternate design. [1] It's a pretty simple layout, and shouldn't be hard to responsify (we can all agree, this is now a word, right?). I was going for a clean, modern look, with 45 degree lines as a visual element that plays off of the shape of my favorite of mizmo's logos (the shape of the logo is essentially the fedora logo shape rotated 45 degrees.) It's not completely finished but you can get an idea of the aesthetic. Let me know what you think!

Maybe e can keep the ideas for a day or two and then build it. I guess we could have this done by next week :D

I love the navbar you have up top on this one! My main concern with this design is that it doesn't seem to have a lot of relation to fedoraproject.org (does that make sense?) I was thinking it would be a good idea for them to look like they came from the same family, e.g., the same way that fedoraproject.org looks related to Fedora Packages (https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/inkscape/ ) looks related to the FUDcon print materials, etc., if that makes sense.
Maybe some kind of mashup where we take the top blue gradient and logo box from http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/mockups/fedoramag/fedoramag-mockups-1.png and combine it with the navbar of http://artboard.cloud.fedoraproject.org/artboard/post/view/143 ?

i don't like too much the gray/dark background since makes too much contrast with the default fedora skins, however, I think that if we add a blue bar on top of emichan design and probably some other blue details we might have a winner.

The only change is that only the top banner should have the arrows on the sides; the smaller banner below should have no arrows on the sides.
The design is roughly based around this theme:
It's called Arras v2 and it's GPLv2. You can grab it from here:

Can you implement this mockup as a theme? Do you have time to do this? http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/mockups/fedoramag/fedoramag-mockups-2.png
The only change is that only the top banner should have the arrows on the sides; the smaller banner below should have no arrows on the sides.
Sorry for my late response, so if you wish just ignore it... But I have to say I don't like this design usability-wise. I think it's pretty but way too huge, too incompact. First the unnecessary huge top banner (wide blue stripe, then wide white stripe, and then finally some picture) and then *another* huge banner bellow. And that's the screen end, usually. Why there are two huge banners? Why there is only one article visible when the page loads in an average sized web browser window? Why do I have to scroll to see more than that?
The footer is also way to huge, but that's much less of a problem since it's at the bottom of the page. Login/register would be better in the side panel or the blue stripe in header than at the very bottom of the page, IMHO.
Personally, I like the header and side panel design from http://artboard.cloud.fedoraproject.org/artboard/post/view/141 but without the smaller banner (the one with foldable sleeves) and with article presentation as in http://artboard.cloud.fedoraproject.org/artboard/post/view/143
The picture, than title and finally content in three columns is odd. When I scroll down then first I see the picture, not the title. That's very odd.
Maybe you are used to attention-grabbing design, I prefer content oriented one. It's a magazine, not an ad. Maybe I'm the odd one here, by I really like designs like this from usability POV (it's a Czech daily "e-news-paper") [with the ads removed] http://neviditelnypes.lidovky.cz/
Just my 2 cents, Martin

I appreciate your feedback, but I think we need to move forward and make something work. Nothing is set in stone and we can always do modifications and redesigns later, but right now I'm afraid of the project stalling so I'd rather just implement this mockup, if that makes sense. I don't see any egregious usability issues in it at all, I feel like it's more a matter of personal preference / taste at this point.

Yeah, no worries, something is better than nothing ;-)

I skimmed over the other discussion about the sliders, does the second banner with arrows not have them because it is supposed to be the image from the spotlit post, rather than a second slider?
The design is roughly based around this theme:
It's called Arras v2 and it's GPLv2. You can grab it from here:
It follows the layout of that theme so well, I suggest we create a child-theme to implement the elements from the mockup.
We have a few people interested in developing the theme, so how you folks like to do this? Does Fedora have a git hosting site? I ask, because if the folks who are interested in prototyping the child theme are seasoned Fedora contributors, I will defer to their workflow. If not, I suggest we get a GitHub/Gitorious/git* repo somewhere and start breaking it down into tasks to knock out.
We will be able to get a lot of neat feedback about the typography and size/space of the elements when folks have a live site to play with. ^_^

Hey Maiki!
I still owe you the admin password for the openshift account; I seem to have misplaced my gpg private key :( Do you have access to the admin UI of the wp install now? (http://wp-fedoramag.rhcloud.com/)

Yeh, you've got it exactly right. It should just be a flat image from a post (not the same post as the ones featured in the top slider)

That sounds reasonable to me.

We can set up a git repo at fedorahosted.org, I can file the ticket to have it created today? We use trac as the front end.

Yep, absolutely!

I have an account on the site, but it is a not an admin.

Cool, keep me updated on that. Looking forward to hacking on it.
Can I get a show of hands of folks who want to work on the theme? I want to make sure everyone has the access needed to work on it, and maybe a preliminary breakdown of things folks want to tackle. Once the repo is up, I will fill it in with the initial files required for a child theme.

Hey!
I has been working on the theme and might have something ready for this weekend or next week. I will just send the theme on a zip since with my awful internet is easier to work locally.
Which wp version are we using right now?

Cool, thanks! We are using 3.5, and we should always be using the latest version, if there is ever any doubt (part of my duties to keep the site up to date). ^_^
I will be looking for yer zip!

Awesome. I'm building the structure first, and will try to make it as neutral as possible (code) so it doesn't collide. I guess using a lot of widgets might make the work easier, since if one of the plugings crashes, we could replace it faster.
do we have a final version for the design? or the one that Mo link was the final?

The design that Mo created was based on an existing theme called Project AR2. Since it follows the layout exactly, and just needs typography, graphics and color adjusted, we decided to create a child theme for it. I started it at https://github.com/maiki/hat-box, which has the stylesheet ready to start modifying.
We are open to a custom theme built from scratch, but right now we are aiming to get the site up and running. I would love to have an ongoing iterative process going for the site! So let's focus on this child theme, get our audience some content, and we will go from there. ^_^
If you need help with the child theme, please ping me, I will can answer most questions, and of course there is http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes. And here is the design reference that Mo posted: http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/mockups/fedoramag/fedoramag-mockups-2.png
Okay, I think that covers it. Did I miss anything?
