I know - that s why i wonder what up2date is still doing in core...
An option could ofcource be (if it dont have to be compiled out/in) to
make it possible to turn it on (through preferences - or maybe even just
gconf) - and attach a big, fat, and generally ugly warning to the
checkbox.
