I am new to linux and see this as an opportunity to learn a little more
about my system. i could not find anything on the apt website that
explains what these mean (are they errors or warnings or just
unimportant info), and nothing in google.
Could someone lend me some insight to what all this is? Or better yet, a
link that has more in-depth info? Thanks

gnome 2.10, fc4 and drop-shadows
by Marius Andreiana
With FC4 which includes gnome 2.10, are there any plans to enable drop-
shadows by default with x.org extensions? (not cpu-intensive)
Thanks!

RE: Keyboard switcher manual set string
by Oguike, Paul (Paul)
Hi all.
I installed Linux (Ffedora) in one harddrive, and window XP in another harddrive of the same PC. It boots from Linux, but displays the following:
Linux
Other
I have 5 seconds to select either of the 2 options. After 5 seconds, it authomatically selects Linux if I don't select "other (the other refers to Window XP)".
I need support in configuring for the following:
* Change the "other" option to "Wndow XP"
* Change the option timing from 5 seconds to 20 seconds.
Regards,
Paul

Yep, finaly :)

Hmm, and I just understand that default is not:
http://www.laka.lv/tiki/tiki-download_file.php?fileId=3
files. In this page is mention(Mon 26 of Apr, 2004) that it is submited
to X.org CVS, so I was thinkg that Federa 3 is already with those
files... So how can somebody put maybe update those files to better use
of Latvian keyboard? Most of Latvians use it, how I understand Debian is
now using it too etc. And add option to Keyboard Indicator to have
apostrophe option of dead key, most of Latvian use it (I think 90%).

Grub
by Alex
Hello,
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I ran out of solutions, so
please help me.
I have two disks, one IDE and one SATA. The IDE is installed with grub (and
fedora core 2) and SATA has Windows XP on it.
My grub.conf:
#--------------------
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Code (2.6.5-1.358)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
title MS Windows XP
rootnoverify(hd1,0)
chainloader +1
#-------------------------
The device.map file:
#--------------------------
(fd0) /dev/fd0
(hd0) /dev/hda
(hd1) /dev/sda
#--------------------------
The SATA drive is seen correctly (I think) by the linux system (I cannot mount
partitions for now, because I lack ntfs support in kernel -- is still the
default installation kernel running).
Please help me!!!

Keyboard switcher manual set string
by Kaspars
Hi from Latvia,
I have one q. I use latvian characters with ['] not with [alt], how
most of Latvians.
Normaly if i setup Latvian keyboard it write:
$setxkbmap lv
(what will be "setxkbmap lv -variant basic")
But I need:
$setxkbmap lv -variant apostrophe
where I can manualy change string what to execute?
I setup it, bet after I upgrade with yum it change back to old style.

Professionalism
by chapmanccc@juno.com
To the developers,
The Linux operating system is maturing and we all hope that it will be a major contender in the home and business markets. As it approaches this goal, the customer base changes. Linux is no longer the "geek OS" it once was. Where once the predominant profile of a Linux user was a young male, you now find fathers and husbands (I am both), women (I am married to one) and children (I have three). Linux is my main OS at home and my wife and oldest child also use it.
With this evolution, a level of professionalism must also take place. Being that the Fedora project is one of the leading consumer Linux distributions, I would hope the developers would want to 'lead the pack' in this area.
This brings me to my point. I was rather disappointed with the content in the "WebCollage" and "Barcode" screensavers. These screensavers have since been manually removed from my system, but I would have preferred them not to be installed by default. When I install Mac OS or Windows, garbage like this is not included. Why? Because the developers strive to build a professional product. Yes, I can install items like this with Mac OS or Windows, but I would need to download or purchase them after installing the OS.
Developers, please be considerate when creating the Fedora distributions and let's strive to make Linux as professional as possible.
Thank you,
Chris

I have Linux and XP simultaneously installed on my
system. I have a Wireless USB adapter attached to the
USB port and it works fine with XP. But I can't get it
to work with linux so that I can have internet on
Linux. It would be great if someone can help me with
the setting up the internet.
Thanks,

Printing Over A LAN Network
by Jeffrey D. Yuille
Hello,
I have just configured printing over a small LAN using CUPS.
However, when I begin to print, it takes about three minutes for a print
job to leave the queue and go to the printer. Has anyone ever
experienced this before? How do I correct this problem. I would
generally click on the printer icon on the task bar and it says that
printing began three minutes ago. It is generally around this time when
each individual print job begins.
