Weekly spins IRC meeting
by Christoph Wickert
Hi fellow spin maintainers.
in order to revive the spins SIG, we should start the regular IRC
meetings again, say weekly or biweekly. In order to find a slot that
fits all (most) of us, I have set up a poll at
http://www.doodle.com/tpi6es8z8chfrkgn
Please add yourself.
Thanks,
Christoph

Future of panel applets
by Christoph Wickert
What is the future of panel applets?
A lot of them (all?) failed to build in the ongoing mass rebuild, so I
wonder
* if they will be completely dropped or still work with
gnome-panel in fallback mode?
* if we should continue maintaining then and if not, if there are
any plans to make gnome-panel obsolete the orphaned applets?
I know that GNOME 3 is a big step ahead, but frankly speaking I'm a
little worried about the massive impact on other packages / desktops /
maintainers on the one hand and the lack of communication on the other.
Can you please provide the maintainers more info in order to reduce the
fallout we currently see in rawhide?
Regards,
Christoph

GNOME3 feature page - updated scoped and comments
by James Laska
Greetings folks,
A few weeks back Matthias, Owen and several others [1] contributed to a
discussion geared towards better understanding the upstream GNOME3
release criteria, and how we can best adjust expectations for the
upcoming 3.0 and F15 releases. I just merged the results of our
discussion into the GNOME3 Fedora feature page. For a diff, see [2].
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Gnome3
The notable changes I'd like to call out are ...
= Scope =
The previous section listed many development and packaging milestones.
Using that information, it was hard to visualize the high-level goal for
the release. This section attempts to articulate what a successful
GNOME3 release looks like to reduce as many surprises as possible come
GA time.
= Comments & Discussion =
Given that GNOME 3 offers a *dramatically* different user experience
than GNOME 2.X, there are going to be plenty of users who are
surprised/disrupted by the changes. As a result, we wanted to start
compiling common questions/workarounds/workflows that have come up so
far. I anticipate referencing these a lot on irc/lists. Perhaps, over
time these migrate into release notes.
Please take a moment to review the changes (again, see diff [2]). I
suspect there is a lot more room to set expectations for the upcoming
releases. Feel free to contribute additional comments/ideas along those
lines.
Thanks,
James

Gnome3 multiple monitors
by Jóhann B. Guðmundsson
I'm curios to know if Gnome3/Gnome shell will support "locking"
workspaces to monitors for example I would be able to have workspace
one on monitor one and workspace 2 on monitor 2 and workspace 3 monitor
3 etc.

GNOME 3 Test Day #1 recap
by Adam Williamson
The first GNOME 3 Test Day took place on 2011-02-03 and went very well,
thanks
a lot to everyone who took the time to help out with testing!
Just preparing images for the test day exposed some important bugs to
be fixed,
and the event itself exposed many more. We had 56 tests run by slightly
fewer
testers (many thanks to those who tested multiple machines!) and the
list of
reported bugs looks like this:

Many of these bugs could benefit from triage, so if Bugzappers have
time to
work on that, it would be great. As you can see, several bugs have
already
been fixed, and many more remain to be worked on.
We have some other bits of analysis to do, particularly about which
systems hit the fallback path and how it worked for those systems,
which I'll work on later. For now, thanks again to everyone who came
to test, and to the desktop team for all their hard work helping
prepare the stack for testing and helping out on the Test Day.

changes to base-x comps group
by Bill Nottingham
(Attempting to CC relevant spins/groups maintainers)
I'm looking to do some rework of the base-x comps group. Right now, its
main purpose in life is to provide the X server that is used by the
various desktops (and the window-managers group, I suppose). However, given
that, it has stuff in it that it really shouldn't - configuration tools,
applets, session services, and so on.
Attached is a patch series that attempts to remove this cruft from the
base-x group, and place it, where relevant, in the appropriate desktop
groups. (At least, the cruft that was on by default - I haven't attempted
to weed out the optional packages yet.)
Does this look sane, as far as it touches your particular desktop? In many
cases, these tools/apps were getting removed/disabled by the live spins
anyway.
