it so hopeless and not being a viable contender.

I heavily use Gnome Boxes on Fedora 24 for testing Design Suite. One of
its benefits is the ease of use as I have less time to fully customize
virt-manager and the nearly seemless setting. Granted bugs still occur
like occasional flickering on some distributions.
One of few elements Boxes needs is GPU passtrought, files sharing and
remote connection (potential to replace vinagre)features and improved
hardware acceleration. I agree with Adam that seemless integration of
some features from virt-manager will be great.
