Splash.xpm.gz
by W. Michael Petullo
Why is boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz included in the kernel RPM? Why is it
not in the grub RPM instead? The reason I ask is that, when using
Fedora's kernel, splash.xpm.gz is installed on my PowerPC-based system.
Yaboot is used instead of grub on PowerPC.

Summary : A freely licensed alternative to the GLUT library
Description :
freeglut is a completely open source alternative to the OpenGL Utility
Toolkit
(GLUT) library with an OSI approved free software license. GLUT was
originally
written by Mark Kilgard to support the sample programs in the second edition
OpenGL 'RedBook'. Since then, GLUT has been used in a wide variety of
practical
applications because it is simple, universally available and highly
portable.
freeglut allows the user to create and manage windows containing OpenGL
contexts on a wide range of platforms and also read the mouse, keyboard and
joystick functions.

i486 base architecture
by William M. Quarles
Hi,
Earlier this year on this list several of us were discussing the
possibility of adjustments being made to the architecture optimizations
of the Fedora Core packages. One of the suggestions thrown around that
had zero opposition was changing the base architecture from i386 to
i486. Why has this not been done? This is especially poignant since
Fedora Core 1 finally broke i386 compatibility with its kernel.
I'm sending a related note on the Pentium 4.
Peace,
William

Configuring NFS under Linux for Firewall control
by Florin Andrei
Please have a look at this document:
http://www.lowth.com/LinWiz/nfs_help.html
It describes a method to configure the components of a Linux-based NFS
server so that NFS access can be controlled via a simple firewall that
does not "understand" NFS.
As an engineer using various firewall platforms, i often saw the need
for a similar solution, in situations when the firewalls being used
could not control complex protocols such as NFS. Sometimes the firewall
helps you and gives you a way to manage such protocols, some other times
it doesn't.
The document seems to be geared towards older Red Hat versions, but
perhaps it is still actual for recent Fedora distributions.
The techniques described require editing scripts in /etc/init.d and so
on. That it typically considered something to avoid in production
environments.
I think it would be great to add "hooks" to the init.d scripts (or
something like that) so that such a change can be made in a cleaner
fashion. Say, add stuff in /etc/sysconfig for the sysadmin to modify in
order to achieve the same effect.
For example, add some variables, containing the port numbers for the
various portmap/nfs components, in a file in /etc/sysconfig:
STATD_PORT="4000"
LOCKD_PORT="4001"
MOUNTD_PORT="4002"
RQUOTAD_PORT="4003"
# set this to 1 to enforce using the unique NFS ports
FORCE_NFS_UNIQUE_PORTS="0"
Or something along these lines - it does not have to be
in /etc/sysconfig. Any mechanism that will allow the sysadmin to "flip a
switch" and make NFS play well with firewalls would be great.
Thank you,

Additional CDs on Fedora
by Angelo
I was wondering what is the format to create additional CDs for Fedora Core.
Someone here can point me to some kind of documentation about this ?
Thanks in advance.

802.1x support
by Matthew Galgoci
Has anyone given any thought to adding 802.1x support to fc?
Mind you I don't mean exclusively for wireless support, but in general.

Troubles (bug) with control-center
by Jonathan Underwood
Hi,
I'm not entirely sure if it's appropriate to bring this problem across to
here - apologies if not.
I just did a fresh install of FC3 onto a box previously running FC2,
wiping the root partition, but leaving the/home partition untouched. On
using an account that had previously been used under FC2,
gnome-keybinding-properties and gnome-theme-manager segfault. However,
from a new user account created under FC3, these programs function fine.
So, I deleted .gnome* .gconf* .gtkrc .pan .themes .icons .gstreamer-0.8
directories from the older account to see if that cleared up the problem.
No joy. So then I copied these across from the new (FC3) account, and
again, no joy. So something seems to be breaking gnome 2.8 for accounts
previously used under FC2, but it's not clear what. There's a bug report
that's been open a while on this (Bugzilla 129098). Any insight gratefully
received.
Thanks,
Jonathan.
ps. please cc me on any replies.
