selinux disabled in new kernel
by Gary Peck
i just upgraded to the latest rawhide, including kernel-2.6.6-1.394 and
selinux-policy-*-1.13.1-1 among others, and when i reboot selinux is no
longer enabled.
dmesg shows the following lines:
...
Calibrating delay loop... 1708.03 BogoMIPS
Security Scaffold v1.0.0 initialized
*** SELinux: Disabled at boot.
Capability LSM initialized
Dentry cache hash table entries: 32768 (order: 5, 131072 bytes)
...
however, my boot line was:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.6-1.394 ro root=/dev/mapper/Volume00-Fedora
and /etc/sysconfig/selinux and /etc/selinux/config both contain:
SELINUX=permissive
if i boot back into kernel-2.6.6-1.381, then selinux seems to get
initialized correctly.

kernel-smp missing in updates/testing?
by Chris Adams
There is a kernel update in updates/testing/2/i386, but there is no
corresponding kernel-smp. Is this intentional, a mistake in the newer
build process for the kernel packaging, or something else?

rpm groups and fedora: a modest proposal
by Matthew Miller
One of the vestigial tags in the rpm format is "Group". Long ago, this was
used by the installer to sort out packages by function, to make it easier to
choose what you wanted installed. But recent installers don't really use
this -- it was found to be more maintainable to keep this metainformation in
the 'comps' file, external to the packages themselves.
And, although this isn't intrinsic to the rpm-group vs. comps-group switch,
the rpm-groups tend to be organized so that you look at the group and pick
which members you want (chosing, for example, GNOME from "User
Interface/Desktops") while the comps-groups are the other way around: pick
"GNOME Desktop", and it installs all the GNOME bits you might want. This is
generally better and more useful.
The canonical list of valid RPM groups is /usr/share/doc/rpm-*/GROUPS.
Theoretically, all packages should have a group listed here. But often,
there's not a very good fit -- does all science and math go under
"Applications/Engineering"? And even Fedora itself doesn't hold to this:
there's a bunch of random "Applications/CPAN", "Networking/Other",
"Desktop/Accessibility", and probably more.
Now, one approach would be to reevaluate the canonical list -- reorganize it
a bit, make some broader groups, and so on, and then make sure all packages
properly fit that list.
But that's not my suggestion. I think Group has become too ugly to be
properly saved. Applications like synaptic should instead use the comps file
groups for organizational purposes. In fact, there's already a lua script
for at-get to make it do exactly that. (I dunno what up2date does -- I
haven't used it.)
Meanwhile, the Group tag itself should be reduced in function. I suggest
very very vastly reduced: it should simply be "Core" for Fedora Core,
"Extras" for Fedora Extras, "Legacy" for Fedora Legacy, and "Alternatives"
for Fedora Alternatives.
Or, if that's too much like the big disttags argument, it should simply be
"Fedora", and then phased out completely. (Packages with no group would
default to "Fedora", and then it could eventually stop being listed in the
spec file completely.)

OT: Livna.org rsync access down?
by Aaron Bennett
Hello,
Sorry for the off-topic post -- I'm hoping there will be others reading
this list with the same issue...
I haven't been able to rsync from rpm.livna.org for a few weeks. At
http://liva.org is a message saying their system is down. Has anyone
else found this? Anyone have an rsync-able livna.org mirror?
Cheers,

XP Dual Boot Problems - contribution from a newbie
by Thiers Botelho
Hi all devels,
I don't consider myself as a developer but, as I have written and
successfully tested at least _one_ shell script, I think I might loosely
fit on this category. :))
Now seriously: regarding JS's call on this thread,
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2004-May/msg00901.html
and also JA's posting of a preliminary doc on this one,
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2004-May/msg00908.html
I wish to offer a contribution to the theme, following a different path
from what's being explored till now. Note that some users might consider
it more troublesome and more involved, whereas some other users might
prefer it due to the additional security it offers.
I have been playing for a time with 'System Rescue CD' which is a live CD
with recovery tools, published at
http://sysresccd.org/ .
Using it a few times, and adding a shallow knowledge of shell scripts,
I've managed to build a set of scripts which work together and allow me to
make partition backups (ext3, vfat and ntfs have been tested) to another
HD or smb share (using partimage), plus backups of the MBR and partition
table using dd and sfdisk .
I've also successfully restored NTFS and VFAT partitions which these
scripts. In one case I purposely deleted the Windoze boot partition with
fdisk and then restored it with a partimage backup after manually
restoring the MBR and partition table.
Summing up all of this: if a doc is being cooked up to advise users on the
perils of dual booting, I suppose many users would be pleased to find on
this doc an additional and optional procedure like the following:
- back up MBR with dd (per script)
- back up partition table with sfdisk (per script)
- back up windows partition(s) using partimage (per script)
- install FC2 with all precautions
- confirm that FC2 boots
- see that Windoze boots and sigh in relief . . . OR
- see that Windoze does not boot and proceed
- back up FC2 partition(s) using partimage (per script)
- restore MBR with dd (manually, maybe . . .)
- restore partition table with sfdisk (manually, maybe . . .)
- see that Windoze now boots and sigh in relief . . . (at least
that's what's hoped at this point . . .)
- see that now FC2 does not boot and proceed
- if needed, destroy and recreate partitions for FC2 (manually
with parted - Partition Magic could also be mentioned as an optional tool)
- restore FC2 partition(s) using partimage (per script)
- see that FC2 boots and sigh in relief
- go do something more interesting
I haven't personally gone thru the whole procedure myself, but judging for
my experience with parts of it I have no reason to suspect it won't work.
Of course I might have missed something, but that would require someone
willing to go thru the whole shebang at once. It might take a few hours
(mostly for I/O on backup and restore operations), but the setup is
straightforward if shell scripts are used.
Maybe it will not be 'politically correct' to suggest third-party tools
such as 'System Rescue CD' to recover from a Fedora-specific problem.
However I'm suggesting this with a vision of broader 'Open Source' and
'community' concepts.
Thanx all for your attention.

Confusion with new platforms and packages
by Nathan Robertson
Hi,
I've been doing a fair amount of work (ie. a fair slice of my free time
over the last couple of months) on getting Fedora Core booting on Apple
PowerPC. Because the ppc tree already existed (from my understanding,
just not tested on Apple hardware), I was given a huge head start. I now
have a install of FC/devel on my PowerBook and an old PowerMac G3, and
have been reporting bugs against packages (usually with patches) to
correct issues I've found. These can be split into two parts:
1. Existing packages, like the kernel needing a .config file that
produces a kernel that boots, and does something useful.
2. Adding packages that make the system more useful, and are essentially
equivalents for powerpc of packages that FC ships on x86. One example is
hfsutils (needed to write a NewWorld boot partition, bugs #117512, #120811).
Bugs reported against #1 types are accepted and fixed. Bugs against #2
types, it appears that Red Hat engineering people are unsure as to what
they are expected to do. Quoting bug #117512, Bill Nottingham:
"Hm, I suppose there should be some sort of policy on packages not
required for any officially supported arch."
This is not the only example I've come across of this, just the latest
one that has led me to post this message. Can somebody senior from Red
Hat give us some idea as to what the story is here?
FWIW, I believe that we're just "completing" the support for PowerPC,
not adding a new platform, because it pre-existed in devel. A community
driven release of a platform previously unsupported in any way by Red
Hat would certainly be send a really good signal to the doubters out
there that Fedora Core isn't just Red Hat, just like Mozilla wasn't just
Netscape (and they had their doubters too).
Regards,
Nathan.

Call for Discussion: Summary document concerning Prevention and Recovery of XP Dual Boot Problems
by Jef Spaleta
Okay, a generous community member has been so kind as to write a
summary document
outlining prevention and recovery on systems where the infamous
harddrive geometry installer bug causes problems with XP dual booting.
Please, read over the attached document and test the preventative and
recovery methods outlined. Suggestions on useful textual edits and
corrections to make before this is widely broadcast are welcome. This
is important enough of an issue to make sure the information in here
is non-toxic before we broadcast a version of this widely, the goal
being to prevent all unncessary dataloss.
Of particular interest:
1)test the preventative measure if you still have access to a machine
where this is a problem. Prevention is always better, if it can be
done reliably.
2)finding a better workaround stdisk warning messages that are being
produced that intefere with simple sfdisk command pipe recovery.

Dual Booting Issues With Fedora Core 2 and Windows: Prevention & Recovery
NOTICE: Please read this document in its entirety.
This guide was inspired by the solution developed by Radu Cornea and
Alexandre Oliva in this thread:
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2004-May/msg02114.html .
This guide aims to integrate the original solution with the refinements
evolved in that thread. This guide offers an explanation of why the
refinements are beneficial and some workarounds to problems that may prevent
the uninitiated from using the solution. It also provides a means of
preventing the problem entirely.
Primer:
There is a bug in Fedora Core 2 that causes the hard disk geometry as
reported in the partition table to be altered during installation. This
change may cause Windows boot failure. Although this bug is severe, it is
recoverable and no data should be lost. It is important not to panic if and
when this happens so you do not cause further problems or cause actual loss
of data in the process of recovering from the error.
Prevention:
This bug can be avoided entirely by using some preventative steps while
installing Fedora Core 2. Thanks go out to Cero (cero(a)coolnetworx.net) for
discovery and testing of this solution.
To avoid the hard disk geometry to be altered you may enter it manually
during installation by using the hdN=<drive geometry> parameter (where N is
the letter representing the drive with the MBR you will use). To discover
the current geometry before installing Fedora Core 2 you should use a
utility that can read the drive geometry as reported in the partition table
