network connection problems
by Gary Peck
I've been experiencing a weird network problem ever since installing the last
few days worth of Rawhide updates. Connecting to pretty much every known web
site works fine, with the exception of my own server at http://realify.com/.
Others can connect to realify.com with no problems, and I can ping realify.com
successfully. But HTTP, IMAP, etc. connections all hang. I'm completely
stumped on this one.
In case this is helpful, I've attached the output of tcpdump
(reformatted for email) while trying to connect to http://realify.com/
from Firefox. Please let me know if you need any other information.
Even a suggestion of what program/library could be causing the problem
would be helpful so that I can file a bug for the right component (I'm
leaning towards glibc if no one suggests differently).
# /usr/sbin/tcpdump -vv host realify.com

After that last packet, Firefox just sits there with the throbber
spinning and "Waiting for realify.com..." in the status bar. Looking at
the same sequence also in ethereal, it seems that Firefox sends the HTTP
GET request, receives a TCP ACK, but then never receives the actual HTTP
reply.

My FC2 doesn't attempt to display that font either. Also tried it on
winXP SP2 with Acrobat Reader 6.0 and it wouldn't display the font either.
I'm guessing PDF creation is broken.

Java development on Fedora
by W. Michael Petullo
Recently, I noticed that gcc's SRPM contains libswt-gtk2.spec.
However, I have not yet seen this package in Fedora's development
packages. Is this package on its way?
Also, are there any plans to configure gcc with --enable-java-awt=gtk?
My understanding is that this is required to get the GTK2 AWT peer
built. Currently, I can't execute gcj-built AWT code natively or using
gij. However, Sun's JVM will execute the same gcj-built AWT code fine.
I understand that gcj's AWT is under development but I would like to be
able to help test.

eggcups has quit unexpectedly
by Brian Millett
Looks like the desktop-printer package needs to be updated. Printing
causes a popup dialogue stating that application /usr/sbin/eggcups has
quit.
Trying to rebuild the desktop srpm does not work.
rpmbuild --rebuild /opt/src/SRPMS/desktop-printing-0.9-1.src.rpm
Installing /opt/src/SRPMS/desktop-printing-0.9-1.src.rpm
error: Failed build dependencies:
dbus-devel = 0.20 is needed by desktop-printing-0.9-1
but the latest is dbus-devel 0.21-6.
Trying to recompile the desktop-printing srpm after setting the dependency
to be
BuildRequires: libgnomeui-devel, dbus-devel => 0.20
fails with

So the API has changed, so I guess I'll wait for the update.

Fixing a PDF/Font Issue
by Michael A. Peters
First off I must admit that I need to install FC2 final before I do any
further investigation - but I can't do that, an app I need does build in
FC2T2 (and works in updated T3) does not build in FC2 final, so I can't
update until the developer releases an official fix (coming soon).
Here's the issue.
Out of several commercial ttf fonts that I have purchased, one does not
*fully* work in FC2T3
It behaves exactly as expected in AbiWord both on screen printing to my
LaserJet 4 (using CUPS)
The problem is that when I print to PDF file using the "create PDF"
function of the AbiWord print menu, this particular font gets screwed up
royally. Other fonts I have purchased work just fine.
I would like to know how I can determine if it is a font problem or an
application problem (I am for now assuming it is a gnome-print problem)
- and once that is determined, how to get it fixed.
If it is a font problem then clearly it needs to be reported as a bug to
the font foundry. If it is a gnome-print problem, then it needs to be
fixed in the OSS world.
Unfortunately it is a commercial font - but it is not an expensive one,
and I would be willing to purchase license for a QUALIFIED fedora
developer to fix the issue, assuming it is a Fedora bug and not a font
bug. I can not pay the salary of the developer, just the font license to
verify the bug.
Assuming it isn't magically fixed by installing FC2 and running yum
update, how do I go about getting it fixed?
The font is Schreibmaschine
Here is what it looks like in AbiWord:

Here is what it looks like when printed to PDF:

Here is the pdf file that produced pdf image:
http://homepage.mac.com/mpeters/misc/fonts.pdf
All my myfonts.com fonts are installed in /usr/share/fonts/purchased and
a proper fonts.dir and fonts.scale is in that directory - all of them
work in AbiWord and other apps that use ttf fonts - all EXCEPT the
Schreibmaschine font work fine when printed to pdf.
The font is from http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/ef/schreibmaschine/
