move koffice and abiword/gnumeric to extras?

With recent extras discussions, looks like it's best to discuss each
package before deciding moving to extras.
What about koffice and abiword/gnumeric? Their only advantage seem to be
lower memory requirements, but OpenOffice.org has a lot more
functionality and it's the default.

Altix 3000 working w/Arjan's latest Fedora Core kernel

This is just a quick note to say that Altix 3000 and 350 works with the
Fedora Core Development kernel-2.6.7-1.499.ia64.rpm, available from Arjan's
kernel page:

Note that, starting with this RPM, the console driver has changed. The
device name is /dev/ttySG0 and it has a major number of 204 and minor number
of 40.
kudzu needs some adjustment to detect our console and the device file needs
to be put in place - both things that will happen in the future. Hopefully
this email is enough to get you started if you're interested in playing with
it.

After lurking for some time, I have heard the call for some
"registry-esque" facility in Linux for some time. I think there is an
important distiction to be drawn very carefully, and it falls within the
UNIX ideals.
An API need not and should not imply the format of the data being
modified. The API should be defined by "need," and the data storage should
be designed to to (1) handle the API and (2) satisfy external requirements
like text files, "/etc" default, subdirectories, etc.
For the API, a simple NAME=VALUE paring is not good enough. As was pointed
out by a previous post, Windows had a Private Profile API. When combined
with a file name and a title heading should be good enough for most all
configurations. Over time, I can easily see it gaining popularity.
Like the Windows Registry, I can see this growing into a horrible monster.
There will be demands for greater levels of hierachy, more flexable data
handling and binary data. As more Windows developers jump ship and come to
Linux, we old time UNIX geeks will be surrounded with windows developers
adding bad things to Linux, not out of mallice, but out of habit.
The need for a standardized configuration API is real. The requirement
that it be optional is absolute. The desire for it to default to plain
text files is important. The ability to change the data storage
methodology is fundimental.
The questions are:
(1) How does this get implemented and propagated to the various projects?
(2) How is it "contained" such that a Windows-like registry does not creep
into Linux?
(3) How do we provide for multiple storage handlers for cases like shared
configuration?
(4) How do we make sure that a specific storage handler does not get
"defacto" mandated by a too popular program?
In reallity, this is a very simple API library. The fact that there is no
standard implies that it is a very hot potato and it is unlikely that it
will get adopted.

I apologize for sending that. In my defense I must note that I administer a
property management system on a linux box and I *hate* the amount of work
I have to do when some config gets screwed up. Half the time I spend is in
just finding the damn config file.

Speaking of rhn/up2date

Hi,
Since up2date on FC has no longer anything to do with the Red Hat
Network I was wondering why the relevant configuration directory in
/etc/sysconfig is still called rhn. Isn't it time to change that into
up2date instead? Maybe keep a compatibility symlink around for one
release or so?

Difference between FC2 x86_64 up kernel and boot kernel on FC2 amd64 dvd?

Greetings,
I have a kernel module compiled against 2.6.5-1.358 uniprocessor that
loads without error under that kernel. The version in Makefile was
changed to 2.6.5-1.358 instead of 358custom. The module will load in an
installed 2.6.5-1.358 OS but it will not load from the initrd boot
kernel on the FC2 AMD64 boot DVD.
The kernel versions appear to be the same, both are uniprocessor, both
are x86_64 (not ia32e) and both are version 2.6.5-1.358. When I try and
insmod the kernel module from the VC#2 shell it fails but I get no error
message.
Does anyone know if there is anything special about the boot kernel on
the FC@-AMD64 DVD that is different from the 2.6.5-1.358 uniprocessor
kernel that gets installed by this same DVD?
The end goal is making a device driver diskette. The diskette and
modules.cgz archive work fine but the driver module itself will not
load, even if I manually extract it from the modules.cgz archive. Can't
figure why it loads in the installed OS but not from the boot
kernel/initrd on the FC2 DVD.
Any help is appreciated!

Are the icons of rhn-applet free??

I see in the license of rhn-applet that it is licensed under the GPL.
Does that mean that the icons are also under the GPL. I'd like to use
them in another app.
