Desktop search tool using lucene
by Marco Meyerhofer
Hello,
Today desktop search tools are killer-apps, the hype about Beagle or
Spotlight is really big. I think that Fedora needs a search tool to be
competitive.
As you might know Beagle uses a C# port of lucene
(http://lucene.apache.org/).
Lucene is a open source search engine written in java.
It runs with gcj but was also ported to other languages like C++ or
Python.
There is allready a search tool based on lucene called regain
(http://regain.sourceforge.net/). But I think it doesn't run with a free
java implementation, also there is no live-indexing and no application
integration, for example with evolution.
It shouldn't be to hard to wright a tool based on lucene or a port of
it. The hard things are live indexing (gamin??) and application
integration.
It would be great to see a desktop search tool in Fedora.

FC4, Xen bridging not working
by Harry Hoffman
hi, just got fc4 and xen working. i'm in dom0 and can see the bridge setup
and ifconfig shows it's up.
trying pinging across to the default gateway and I get nothing (echo reply
is not blocked)
stop iptables to make sure that's not it and run into the same thing.
restarted switch in case it was an arp cache issue, no dice.
changed xend-config.sxp from bridging to routing, reboot, still no network
connectivity.
reboot to standard kernel all works well.
any ideas?
TIA,
Harry

Things to do for FC5: init stuff
by Ralf Ertzinger
Hi.
While we (you) are ripping apart the init system:
how about tagging those init scripts that do not need special
handling duting system shutdown, i.e. those that will be caught
by hte "sending all processes the TERM signal" stage anyway?
This was discussed during FC4 development but not implemented.

Problem with busybox based initrd: umount of initrd hangs system
by Terry Barnaby
Hi,
I am building a custom initrd for booting a Fedora 3 based system.
In general all is working fine, except that when I try an umount the initrd
after boot has suceeded the system hangs with no error messages.
I have created a cpio based initrd using busybox. A simplified version
of the "init" script is attched. This finishes with running /bin/sh on the
hard disk mounted file system. If I try and run "umount /initrd1" the system
hangs.
The system is booted using PXE based network boot using pxelinux 3.0.9.
I am using busybox-1.00.
The kernel is Fedora3's version 2.6.11-1.35_FC3smp.
Any Ideas ??
Terry

motherboard autodetect and autoconfig of motherbord specific stuff
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
Lately I've run into some stuff wich needs tweaking to get it 100% which
is motherboard dependend. Things which (may need) motherboard specific
tweaks are:
-lm_sensors
-xorg.conf for mainbords with builtin graphics
(Option "VBERestore" "true" for i810 for example)
So now I'm thinking about creating somekinda hwautodetect and autoconfig
architecture and program for this.
Questions:
-good/bad idea?
-anyone willing to help?
-how can one detect the exact mainboard (Producer, type, rev)?
Ideas:
-memmap the bios, checksum it
-memmap the bios get identifier string, match to a regex
-combine the above with PCI id matching for chipset (extra check)
-which motherboardspecific settings can be benefitial?
So far I have:
-lm_sensors
-xorg.conf for mainbords with builtin graphics
(Option "VBERestore" "true" for i810 for example)
-onboard sound tweaks??
-what database backend to use?
preferably one which is already required by the core of most distros
(This is primarily targeted at Fedora, but I would like to make it
distro independent if possible)
-what is a good implementation language for this?
I'm thinking about a C-python mix, C for the detection, python for the
rest.
Regards,
Hans

default rpm query format on x86_64
by Shahms King
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
The default rpm query format of %{name}-%{version}-%{release} is less
than optimal on x86_64 where the x86_64 and i386 versions of some
packages are installed. I've modified my local rpm macros by creating
"/etc/rpm/macros.local" with:
%_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch}
which solves the problem on my computer, but has any thought been given
to making this the default, at least on x86_64 (or other multi-lib archs)?

C++ compatibility package dropped
by Mike Hearn
Hi,
It's that time again! Fedora Core 4 no longer installs the
compat-libstdc++ package by default, meaning that any users who install
or run a C++ app which was built using GCC 3.3 or lower is now greeted
with an incomprehensible and unhelpful error (or nothing, if they use the
GUI).
C++ is used by a lot of games and other commercial apps. Virtually none
use the new C++ DSO version. Many never will.
The release notes talk repeatedly about the "solid platform" that GCC 4
brings: this must be some new use of the word platform I have not yet
encountered as to me the word platform implies some measure stability.
This sort of thing crops up with every Fedora release. The message now, as
then, is simple: this gratuitous and unnecessary breakage of backwards
compatibility must end. If it does not all the work GNOME and the rest of
the Fedora desktop team is putting in will be wasted - a usable desktop
that falls flat on its face the moment you leave the CD set behind is not
usable in the real world at all.
Please, save the usual replies. I know some here think any packages not
used within the distribution should be dropped. I know some don't care
about games (even the open source ones). I don't want to hear it -
Fedora is not the universe, and if it wishes to be taken seriously should
not pretend to be.
