plans for final FC4 kernel update?
by Matthew Miller
Practically speaking I suppose this is a question directly for Dave Jones.
But I'm not picky.
Fedora Core 4 is going to transition to Legacy status pretty much any minute
now. There is, however, kernel-2.6.17-1.2143_FC4 sitting in the
updates/testing area. Presumably this will be really pushed before the
cutoff?
Is there any chance that there might be one more after that? I know that FC4
has been pretty closely tracking the FC5 kernel; it'll probably make the job
for the Legacy people much easier if those are as in-sync as possible.
Byt really I ask because I finally sat down and figured out what's behind my
pet kernel bug, <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=189812>.
Turns out it's a recently-solved problem, fixed in 2.6.18-rc1. Man oh man
would it make my life easier for the next six months if the official FC4
kernel included this patch in some way or another. (It's been broken since
2.6.16.)
Just a humble, hopeful request. :)

Printer driver - Lexmark X1160
by David
I am the proud (?) possesor of one of these all in one units which
unfortunately has no Linux drivers and this is now the only reason that
I am running a Windows box on my home network.
I have googled high and low for details of how to get this printer to
work on Fedora with practically no sucess - I did find instructions on
getting the printing part of the unit to work but unfortunately it did
do this.
Does anyone know of any place I could go look to get this working or
details of how to build a suitable priver for the X1160?
Any help / guidence would be appreciated
Cheers

Fedora's intended target audience?
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
I've been following the AIGLX repository discussion from the sideline.
And I'm a bit shocked by what I'm reading there. There seems to be
strong support for releasing Xorg 7.1 as an update for FC-5 even though
that will break both NVidea and Ati binary drivers. For the records all
my computers have a radeon 9200 running OSS drivers.
I'm a bit surprised about this, since I find this very end-user
unfriendly. The possible dropping of these drivers was what triggered me
to write this mail, but the question asked in this mail has be on my
mind for a while. When replying please focus on the asked question and
if you want to discuss the Xorg 7.1 update for FC-5, please do that in
the AIGLX thread and not here, thank you!
I've been putting much of my spare time into Fedora, because I believe
in opensource and want to help and because I believe Fedora is a good
distribution. I've got friends, my wife, my parent and here parents all
running Fedora.
I think in our effort to make the best opensource OS we're loosing sight
of one very important aspect: the people for who we make that OS.
Lately I've heard saying that Fedora is a testbed for new RH technology
(which IMHO is partly true and partly is what makes it great!) and that
its a distro by developers for developers. Know I'm very much hoping
that the statement by developers for developers isn't true, because then
I've been spending my time working on the wrong distro, as I want to
work on a distro targeting a larger audience then just developers.
So lets see what our officially state goals are, the frontpage of
http://fedoraproject.org says:
Fedora Core is an operating system and platform, based on Linux, that is
always free for anyone to use, modify and distribute, now and forever.
It is developed by a large community of people who strive to provide and
maintain the very best in free, open source software and standards.
Then on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Overview there is some more about
our goals in much the same line. So Fedora is all about opensource,
freedom and choice. Good!
But Fedora as an OS is meant to be used by people, right? I mean what
good is it to create "the very best in free, open source software and
standards." OS, if almost noone is using it?
So I'm assuming that we are making Fedora to be used by people, lets
call these people our target audience. I've been searching the wiki for
a definition of this target audience but I have failed to find it. So
I'm asking it here, what is Fedora's intended target audience?
Regards,
Hans

Note, that any level of binary compatibility is an absolute nightmare
to maintain over time. Red Hat does this to some extent for RHEL
releases, and it's a ton of work. The number of times we've not been
able to just take a fix from an upstream diff and apply because it would
have broken an ABI is $BIGNUM. In some cases, it's taken _weeks_ to
get an equivalent fix that does the same thing whilst maintaining ABI
constraints. Typically these reworked fixes jump through all kinds of
horrific hoops to pull off the end result, but they require massive amounts
of QA to ensure that they're doing the right thing.
Fedora has the advantage that we *can* take an upstream fix that
everyone else is already using, and benefit from the fact that it's
seeing wide exposure outside of Fedora, as well as within.
In simple terms: If you want stable ABIs and you're using Fedora,
you're using the wrong distro.

Re: Leaving?
by Ryan Hodges
This thread isn't capturing any additional value. The solution is not
to point the finger at NVIDIA or ATI or anyone else. We shouldn't feel
entitled to them meeting open source release schedules. The Fedora
Project makes all decisions related to what it releases and will be held
accountable to those decisions.
Decisions are being made based on the current philosophy of the Fedora
Project. Some people are advocating a change to that philosophy, which
is fine. Is there a better process to advocate that change. At this
point I'm waiting for some kind of leadership board to step in and say,
"We made the decision and stand by it. If you want to complain, send
your emails to <some_non-dev_alias>. Here's how you can influence future
decisions of the board.
I'm sensing a lack of leadership here.
By the way, many comments were made that were making presumptions about
the make-up of Fedora's customer base. I'm wondering if the Fedora
Project or RedHat has done any market research into the use of Fedora.

It does contain both a kernel module and a loadable X.org module. As I
understand it, all 3-D X.org drivers work in this fashion.
The X.org module does the actual drawing to the hardware; and the kernel
module takes care of things like handling DMA and intterupts, GPU
command buffering and basic security validation, etc.

Re: Leaving? ( AKA Fedora Target Audience)
by thingsmith@comcast.net
I think this is an interesting discussion that has been raised
several times before. So far I can see two camps:
1. Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes.
2. Care about the" less expert" users. I wonder how many of the FC
users are new to linux and want to learn linux. I know that is why I
started with Fedora.
The "full speed" groups seems to be of the opinion that NV and ATI
will solve the problem if Fedora adopts the Xorg 7.1. Frankly, I
think this is a bit naive. ATI & NV have need incentive to move
forward for Fedora. If RH did the upgrade that broke the NV and ATI
drivers something would happen. (BTW when is RH planning to move to
Xorg 7.1, I have no idea how to find that out.)
But the "full speed" has done this before and FC survived. Look at
the problems when FC 5 first deployed and the less experienced users
could not add packages if they were not attached to the Internet
until they learned how to fake out yum. If this is the final path,
I hope that people on the forum will be more understanding than when
FC 5 first deployed.
I would like to remind the "full speed" group of another clause in
the objectives for Fedora;
Emphasize usability and a "just works" philosophy in selecting
default configuration and designing features provided by Fedora.
This seems to be broken with the deployment of Xorg in FC5.
Let the Xorg 7.1 be part of FC6. Use the Wiki to include how
to upgrade to Xorg 7.1.
Right or wrong. most outside users (and potentially some inside
users ) see Fedora as the testing grounds for the next release of
RedHat. To alienate them is not a good thing.
