Guidelines for creating subpackages?
by Joachim Frieben
I have recently submitted a bug report for the "vtk" package, see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=388211
because vtk-devel depends on a fair number of packages including "vtk-qt" which in turn pulls in "qt" and analog dependencies which is rather annoying. To my surprise, the bug got closed immediately as "NOTABUG".
The "plplot" package however, shows a fine granularity which allows to avoid the unnecessary installation of undesired libraries/toolkits:
plplot, plplot-devel, plplot-gnome, plplot-gnome-devel, plplot-java,
plplot-java-devel, plplot-libs, plplot-octave, plplot-perl,
plplot-tk, plplot-tk-devel, plplot-wxGTK, plplot-wxGTK-devel.
Shouldn't there be a standard policy how to proceed in such cases? The procedure adopted in the "plplot" case obviously appears more appealing to me ..

Why shouldn't devel packages pull in a boatload of requirements? If i
make a graphical wrapper around say gnome-devel, it would make my life
easier writing a spec file to just say 'gnome-devel' and know
everything is included. IMHO, build environments tend to be very
heavy, and require alot of resources anyways.

mounting removable media never seems to work
by Florin Andrei
Mounting USB sticks, DVDs, CDs, etc - this works flawlessly with other
distributions I've tried (Ubuntu), but with Fedora it's something that
seems to stop working randomly, whenever the packages update to jour
changes something in the system.
I've a F7 system, fully updated, and now when I insert a USB stick, I
get the HAL error "permission denied: not in active session".
This is annoying because it's something that's supposed to just work. It
does work in Ubuntu. Heck, it works fine in XP. But not in Fedora.
Moreover, it's not a new thing. Previous releases of Fedora used to
display this same problem, which never seems to be solved completely.
It's like "removable media? who cares whether it works properly or not?"
Come one, people, wake up.

Presto and yum security plugin
by Marcin Zajączkowski
Hi,
When I started using yum presto and a repository for F8 [1] given at
its homepage, yum-security stopped telling me which packages fix
security issues.
Is it a known issue? Is it a problem with presto repository (which
maybe doesn't contain that info), presto plugin itself or
a general incompatibility of mixing those plugins?
