Status of rawhide
by Jesse Keating
Hello from the Red Hat summit!
We're working very hard to get a rawhide out to you guys, and we're very
close. Bill Nottingham started work on some code to pull packages out of
Koji, do some multilib fun, and make a repo out of the packages. The next
logical step would be hooking in parts of pungi to run buildinstall to make
the repo installable. I've done some modifications to Bill's code to handle
noarch packages that have ExcludeArch and whatnot, as well as integrated our
whitelist/blacklist stuff for multilib. The current code repo is
http://people.redhat.com/jkeating/git/mash.git and I'll shortly be making it
into a Fedora Hosted project proper on git.fedoraproject.org and such.
Unfortunately the code requires that you have the koji package store as a
local file system (or nfs file system) so it won't be very usable outside the
Fedora infrastructure.
What's next?
We need group info in the repodata, that means making use of a comps file.
We need to compose _to_ the file store and make use of hardlinks for all the
packages.
We need to do a full arch test run, i386, x86_64, ppc, ppc64.
At some point we need to integrate pungi and run buildinstall across the
repos, but that requires some sort of runroot facility within Koji as
buildinstall needs to be ran on the arch/package set it is 'buildinstalling'.
And probably some more things we'll notice along the way.
We also need to move some bits around on our staging server and on our master
mirror to make use of the new layouts.
We are getting very close. I'm going to be taking time when I can while at
the RH Summit to work on some of this, and I'll be encouraging folks to help
out where possible.
Stay tuned, very exciting times ahead!

Sun just released the JDK under the GPL implications for F8 / F9?
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
Sun has just released (most of) the JDK under the GPL, hurray!
Looking forward to the next devel cycle what will this mean? I haven't looked
yet at which parts are missing, as some parts are missing since they are not
Sun's to open.
But I think we need a new java strategy for F8, or otherwise surely F9, taking
the GPL JDK into account. In my limited experience gcj, although a great
achievement, fails to run many java programs, including many opensource java
programs, out of the box.
I've been tempted sometimes to try and fix either the app or gcj, but after
Sun's promise I've opted to invest my time elsewhere. Although I'm a java noob,
I'm also a quick learner, and I'm thinking about sinking some serious time into
this, but we first need a strategy I think.
Well thats really all I've to say about this, not much really, but I'm kind
hoping this will be the start of a very interesting thread :)
Regards,
Hans

[Announcement] Fedora 7 Deep Freeze/GA release schedule change
by Josh Boyer
The bulk of the Core/Extras merge has now been finished, and the Release
Engineering team has been working hard to get things back in shape for
the final F7 release. However, due to the massive nature of this
undertaking, we are not coming back online as fast as we had hoped.
We do not have a rawhide repository available as of yet, and the release
and QA teams are not comfortable going into deep freeze at this point.
During the Release team meeting yesterday, it was decided to slip the
deep freeze date by a week at least. This will also slip the final
release of Fedora 7 by at least a week.
Slipping a week will allow more time for the merge tree to materialize
and stabilize. Maintainers will also have more time to adjust to the
new processes involved as a result of the merge. We will also have more
time to evaluate the blocking bugs that are currently open in Bugzilla.
While this slip is unfortunate, it is also in the best interest for the
quality of the release. Please bear with us as we strive to make this
the best release of Fedora to date!

Merge update
by Mike Chambers
How's the merge seem to be going and/or working out? Can we expect the
finale to happen in the next couple hours or in the wee morning hours?
Or dare I ask, do we have a problem or anything? Hope all is going
well.
Jesse you hangin in there and remembering to eat? haha

Installation of Flash plugin on Fedora 7 test 4 in Firefox
by Valent Turkovic
I tried installing adobe flash plugin on clean install of Fedora 7
test 4. It failed 2-3 times then I recorded my first video of it
failing for bug submission. And here is the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9zI9vpLdgM
Should this be reported as a bug? And if yes - where? Is this a Firefox bug?
After that I tied once more and it failed again.
Then I started recording it again, and then it seceded!
Here is the video of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=666z1sGfEv8
What are other people's experience with installing flash under Fedora 7?
It is great that it works as it does in Windows in order to make it
easier for new users.
Great job Fedora team! Keep it up and just polish these small quirks.
Thanks!

Hello Jonathan,
is it possible for yum-presto to interpret $basearch and $releasever
variables in its URLs in the config file?

Possible changes between F7T4 and the final Fedora release
by Shashank Sharma
Hi list,
I have a question about the final Fedora release on May 24. The thing is, I
downloaded F7T1 and noticed that it had no terminal under the Applications
-> Accessories menu. Same with F7T2. This was probably a bug or whatever and
I saw several people complaining about this.
Now in test 4, the Terminal is available under Applications -> System Tools.
Have me made up our minds? Is the position now final or could it change
still when the final is released on May 24th?
Also, I was wondering what kind of work is being done on Fedora currently? I
mean, I know there won't be any new features apart from what was in F7T4. So
my question is: are you working on things like fonts, graphics, wallpapers,
and such, or just fixing bugs and everything else like layout of the tools
(see analogy about the terminal) final?
Another thing that bothered me about the layout is the System -> Preferences
menu. It was different in Test1, test2 and test4. Have we finally settled on
what I see in Test 4 (categorized preferences menu).
In summary, my question is whether or not Fedora 7 will look the same as
F7T4 with bug fixes or will Fedora 7 have a different look and feel?
Thanks!
