RFC: mass rebuild results
by Karsten Hopp
Hello,
I've done a mass rebuilt of Rawhide in an (almost) full install chroot with x86_64 packages only.
Then I've run rpmdiff of the resulting packages against the rawhide packages and put together a rather large list
of differences. You can grab the list from http://people.redhat.com/karsten/RPMDIFF . This list doesn't even contain the failed
packages which suddenly have unpackaged files not catched by some wildcard in the %files section.
- additional requirements usually mean either a missing configure flag to disable a certain feature or a missing buildrequirement
p.e.
RPM in Rawhide: vim-enhanced-7.1.266-1.fc9.x86_64.rpm Rebuilt RPM: vim-enhanced-7.1.266-1.fc9.x86_64.rpm
added REQUIRES libruby.so.1.8()(64bit)
This mean I either should have added --without-rubyinterp to vim's configure flags if I don't want ruby support or I need to add
a build requirement on ruby-devel
- almost every *-javadoc package gets a huge amount of additional documentation in a full install rebuild
- some noarch packages put files in either /usr/lib64 or in /usr/lib, depending on which arch they have been built (example: gcstar)
- some packages, p.e. evolution switch from using libgnutls to libgio ?
In my opinion rebuilding packages outside of mock should give me packages with the same features than the original ones.
In addition to that I shouldn't have to cope with build failures because of unpackaged files just because some other installed
random package changes the filelist of my package via configure detection.
The packaging guidelines mention only that the buildrequirements for the used configure flags need to be added to the spec file
but I think that we should add to the guidelines that all other (unwanted) features need to be disabled via configure flags.
Should I even bother to start filing the most obvious bugs or shall we leave it 'as is' ?

Google Summer of Code Idea: Fedora Election Software
by Toshio Kuratomi
Hey all,
The deadline for students to submit applications for Google Summer of
Code has been extended to April 7th, 2008. So if there are any other
students looking for a chance to program something, I have a project
that needs doing.
In Fedora we have elections for the Board and various steering
committees. We also have polls to determine the codename for the next
Fedora Release. All of these are currently driven off a pair of small
cgi scripts that spot and I whipped up to get us up and running with a
Free Software solution. However, this tiny application is showing its
limitations:
* We can only run a single election at a time. It would be great if you
signed in and then, based on the groups you belonged to, you were given a
ballot for each of the elections you were eligible to vote in at a time.
* There's no way to show historical records of voting (ie: 50 people of
500 possible voted in the first FESCo election. 300 of 1000 possible
voted in the second. Etc.)
* It would be great if elections were more self-serve. Currently I need
to run a script that enters all the information into the database when a
new election occurs. If this information could be added via a web form
and then simply approved by an admin that would make things more efficient.
We'd like the new software to be written in TurboGears since we'll have
to maintain it in infrastructure but beyond that this is a chance to
design the new system from start to finish (db schema, controller
methods, etc).
I'll add this to the wiki page as well.

Board public meeting, 2008-04-01 UTC 1800
by Paul W. Frields
Apologies for the late notice:
The Board is holding its monthly public meeting on Tuesday, 01 April
2008, at 1800 UTC on IRC Freenode. The public is invited to do the
following:
* Join #fedora-board-meeting to see the Board's conversation. This
channel is read-only for non-Board members.
* Join #fedora-board-public to discuss topics and post questions. This
channel is read/write for everyone.
We found that in the last meeting the Board members, by joining the
#f-b-public channel, inadvertently drove some discussion away from the
meeting logged in #f-b-meeting. This time around we will not join that
channel, and rely entirely on our gracious moderator Max Spevack to
direct questions to #f-b-meeting for us to answer. This routine should
limit confusion and make sure our logs are useful to everyone.
The first topic in the meeting, on which the Board will take questions,
is the spin policy. We will have a short discussion and then open up
for questions on that topic. After that, maybe 15-20 minutes total --
we'll move on to an open floor for other questions.
The Board has set aside the first meeting of each month as a public
"town hall" style meeting. We are hoping to do an audio-based meeting
at some point in the near future when resources allow. We look forward
to seeing you at the meeting.

Chairman, Fedora Project Board

notebook / multiple visual displays - activation and control
by Development discussions related to Fedora
Hi,
There are a couple of scenarios with multiple displays etc, that don't
work that well in F8, in particular when the situation changes. Eg:
notebook (hp compaq nx6320):
- lcd panel: 1024x768
- vga out: {connected to sony crt 1400x1050), or some lcd.
- svideo/composite OP: different pins are used on the connector and a
converter cable can be ysed to pckup the composite video pins.
If I boot up, adjust the connectors {plug different bits in} then
login, for the most part that output will be activated. The following work:
- lcd panel only
- lcd and crt
- crt only
- lcd and svideo
- lcd and composite
, which is great. However, changing a display connection while logged in
doesn't adjust the outputs that are activated.
=====
Use case:
Flo started her laptop when she arrived at work in the morning, and by
lunch time she has 15 apps open {eg pdfs, spreadsheets, documents,
program editors, web pages, email, and the presentation she has been
working on}.
She needs to move the laptop in the meeting room, so that she can give
the presentation. While the battery keeps the unit going, and
networkmanager takes care of getting the unit re-connected to the
company network, she finds the image wont show on the boardroom
projector via the vga output.
She tries the Fn F4 {panel|panel+vga|vga} key combo. The panel screen
flickers black for a micro second, but the image is not sent out the vga
port. She tries the system-config-display, but isn't willing to restart
X to activate the changes as suggested by the applet (because she would
waste so much time to get her materials reopened).
Since she has been watching DVD's on her SVideo TV at home she plugs the
SVideo into the large screen TV, and again can't get an image to be
displayed. Composite is no go as well. At this moment the sweat drips
from her brow and the heart starts pounding as the first meeting guests
arrive...
=====
Or perhaps I am simply missing the fedora howto or correct application,
or key stroke to either cycle through different inputs, or auto activate
them as they are plugged in. {intel 945GM driver}

How to start Tor only when network works in upstart framework?
by Yuan Yijun
Hi,
I use NetworkManager to connect to wifi network (WEP encrypted). Tor
daemon should be started after connection established. Everyday I have
to start Tor service manually. How to use upstart to do this?
BTW, when starting Tor I have to run "setenforce 0" then set to 1 when
started. Is this only happening to me?
Thanks!

cmake 2.6.0 in F-10
by Orion Poplawski
I've just built cmake 2.6.0 RC 5 in the F-10 development branch. If you
run into issues building cmake projects with the new version, you can
try adding:
cmake_minimum_required(VERSION 2.4)
to the top of CMakeLists.txt until your upstream has a chance to fix.
This package also add a cmake-gui package with a Qt front end to CMake.

Directory structures in the future and other things I want.
by Stephen John Smoogen
I dont know if this is a thread hijack, but I felt this was a better
name than the previous threads subject. If it is.. my apologies..
My main 2 things I would like:
1) If we were to say get rid of /usr/bin, /bin, or /sbin etc.. Heck I
wouldn't mind if it wasn't named something people could understand
like: /SystemPrograms/ . I justwould like to see it come from a joint
Linux taskforce so that it's not just yet another OS weirdness. I say
this because I am currently having to rewrite my .profile to deal with
our growing HP-UX, AIX, SuSE, Red Hat, Solaris, and CygWin
environment. Everyone but Linux seems to stick things in weird spots
or you are expected to know that you can't use /opt/bin/blah all the
time because its a symlink and it breaks on this blah blah blah.
2) One thing that Jesse and Seth brought up was the one major RPM
breakage that comes up every other release about why we can't do
something really cool. And that is the problem with symlinks and I
think directories. I would rather us do something really really
radical like going to a package system that deals with that than
moving items from /sbin, /usr/sbin/, /usr/myosrocks/sbin etc.
3) I think I will +1 Bills very clear fix: Just add /sbin:/usr/sbin to
everyone's path. Deal with 1 and 2 after 9 is out the door, and
probably shoot for it to be 11 earliest (or if we never go to 10 or
11.. whatever the next series is called :)).

F8/9 6-16x slower than XP to boot
by Dimi Paun
Folks,
I have reported in the past slow boot times. I have performed
some more tests that may help people improve the situation.
Hardware: 2x2.13 GHz Intel Core Duo 6400, 4GB RAM
Software: Fedora 8, running Innotek's Virtual Box
Virtual Hardware: 538MB RAM, 8GB HDD
OS in Virtual Box: Fedora 9 Beta and XP
Test was to boot the box and start Firefox to the point where I can
interact with it (i.e. type in location bar).
Summary:
* F8 on real hardware, without BIOS time: 2:15
* F9 on virtual hardware: 7:00
* XP on virtual hardware: 0:22
For F8 boot, here is a breakdown of times:
0:00 -- Grub starts
1:25 -- login prompt
1:50 -- I can click on the Firefox icon
2:15 -- Firefox becomes usable
For F9 Beta boot, being so slow, I could record more details:
0:00 -- start of virtual box
0:45 -- "Welcome to Fedora" shows
1:30 -- udev finishes (took 45'!)
1:40 -- first graphics show (rhgb)
3:20 -- X restarts (I guess rhgb ends)
4:00 -- login prompt
6:15 -- Firefox icon is clickable
7:00 -- Firefox becomes usable
A few notes:
* I took out all times for user interaction
* I repeated the tests a few times, the results are stable
* For whatever reason, Fedora 9 Beta feels very sluggish in the
virtual machine (even the mouse stutters), whereas XP runs
extremely well. Maybe Innotek did some Windows-only optimizations?
* I measured to the point where I could interact with Firefox.
However, at that point XP appeared more responsive than Fedora,
even when compared to the Fedora that was running on the real
hardware, with a lot more RAM available.
* Even when comparing Fedora on real hardware vs XP on VM,
it took longer to just start Firefox in Linux vs. the entire
boot + starting of Firefox in Windows!
I'd be glad to provide more information if people are interested.
