Yes, absolutely. I read them (and many other pages) completely
before developing "CreatingPackageHowTo". Neither is a tutorial
on how to create Fedora RPMs; they both presume you _already_
know how to create Fedora RPM packages.
The available tutorials are not very helpful, either.
Most (e.g, "Maximum RPM" and "RPM Guide") are out of date and
omit much of the Fedora-specific stuff that's important
if you're creating a Fedora package. For example, how do I encode the
"License:" value in Fedora, properly?
I'm all for creating portable RPMs, but a tutorial needs to include the
information necessary to easily comply with Fedora's key rules. Otherwise,
you end up wasting a lot of time tracking that stuff down.
Both SuSE and Mandriva have both switched to
using a Wiki to maintain their RPM tutorials. Presumably, that's so they
can be kept up-to-date and include the distro specifics.

This session is running as a privileged user box?
by Jerry Williams
I am getting tired of clicking Continue when the "This session is running as
a privileged user" box pops up each time I login as root.
I am the only user most of the time on the box and I know that you should
login as a normal user most of the time.
So could we add a check box to this dialog box that says "Don't show this to
me again." ?
I saw this a bunch at the Summit as well.
People login as root and have to keep clicking "Continue" and it slows
things down.
And most people know about running things as root and really only need to
see this once.
Thanks!

sg3_utils updated in rawhide
by Dan Horák
Hi,
I have updated sg3_utils to a new upstream version 1.26 with new soname
for the library (and name too libsgutils => libsgutils2) and repoquery
told me, that 3 packages depends on it
lsvpd
libgpod
libipoddevice
All will need some updates to rebuild successfully.

LEGAL: SystemC Open Source License 2.3
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Hello there,
I'm wishing someone could point out _whether_ the :
SYSTEMC OPEN SOURCE LICENSE v2.3 is compatible with Fedora Licenses policies.
http://chitlesh.fedorapeople.org/systemC/License.pdf
I've just requested a package review for systemc.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=453335
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SystemC
SystemC's entrance on Fedora repositories will considerably elevate
FEL's professional status. We will attract more professionals than
hobbyists.
Fedora Electronic Lab is a platform for designing hardware with
opensource software.
Cadence and Synopsys, two big leading 'enemies' companies in the
semiconductor world have worked together for systemc.
Thus with systemc in the fedora repositories,
* we can provide quality and entreprise solutions to our Fedora Users.
* more universities or hardware engineers will be interested.
* more chances having embedded solutions by FEL in the future.
Another issue is that to obtain the sources, one has to subscribe on
their website.
There is already a Linux distribution shipping systemc, SCLinux:
http://sclive.wordpress.com/about/
Aside FEL is shipping VHDL and Verilog support, systemc's inclusion
would simply be the best professional and entreprise solution that we
can provide.

chitlesh

kernel module options for cpufreq
by Richard Hughes
At the moment we set:
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_PERFORMANCE is not set
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_USERSPACE=y
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_ONDEMAND is not set
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_CONSERVATIVE is not set
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_PERFORMANCE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_POWERSAVE=m
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_USERSPACE=y
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_ONDEMAND=m
CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_CONSERVATIVE=m
This is not ideal from a power-saving point of view.
In an ideal world we would:
* remove CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_CONSERVATIVE -- ondemand does a better job
on all workloads
* remove CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_USERSPACE -- we have nothing in userspace
that needs this sort of control, and if we did, the latency would be
horrible
* remove CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_POWERSAVE -- ondemand automatically
throttles down to lowest, and is just a hardcoded state
* compile into the kernel CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_GOV_ONDEMAND -- we really
want to be running this on all systems that support it
* set ONDEMAND or PERFORMANCE to default as USERSPACE is just changed
to something else by cpuspeed. You really don't want to be using
USERSPACE at all.
Matthew Garrett and I are working on a latency profile for power
management, and having all these modules potentially loaded is bad.
Comments?
Richard.

Xen kernel freezing during boot after upgrading from FC8 to FC9
by casimiro barreto
Hello,
I've posted this before... but it seems it is not solved yet.
After I upgraded from FC8 to FC9 Xen kernels are freezing during boot.
More precisely just after the message: (Xen) ... relinquishing VGA
The same problem happens with 2.6.25.3-1.fc9.i686 and 2.6.25.3-2.fc9.i686

diploma thesis with kvm
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
I am going to work on my diploma thesis in autumn.
Currently I am working on an idea and could need some feedback.
My idea is to extend kvm virtualisation with a feature that could be
usefull in cluster computing: The ability to sync network traffic
between several machines to make a snapshot of many machines which
interact with each other.
The basic concept is to log the outgoing and incoming packets for a
while until each machine is ready to be paused, then pause all, do
whatever you want (make a snapshot, migrate etc.).
When the machines are started again the packet log is compared and
missing packets are sent to their targets again.
So if any of you could answer me some questions I would be gratefull:
1. Is that already possible (I hope not ;) )?
2. Is that usefull?
3. Is that generally possible?
4. Are there any papers out there about how the network stack is
implemented in KVM?
thank you for any advice.

/usr/share/eclipse/* -> %{_libdir}/eclipse/
by Andrew Overholt
Hi,
In the past we've struggled with multilib issues in the Eclipse SDK
package. Examples include having to re-pack every JAR to have a common
timestamp, shuffling arch-specific JARs off to %{_libdir} thus causing
headaches with upstream mechanisms (which I'm concerned will continue
with the new version), etc.
I just found out today that Debian ships everything in
%{_libdir}/eclipse to avoid these issues. I'm proposing we do the same
for Fedora 10 and beyond.
Pros:
- self-contained installation like upstream
- dramatically speeds up builds
- remove potential for bugs with the multiple locations
- looks like an upstream download
- consistency with other distributions
Cons:
- larger disk footprint for multilib installations (on the order of 100
MB ... although the vast majority of users don't use both)
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Andrew
