Re: Fedora Support channels Improvement ideas
by Ben Williams
As one of the OPs for the #fedora channel, i feel all theses ideas are
great but I think what we should do first is the following:
1) policy or rules created and posted somewhere linked in the channel
topic and or on the Chanserv message entering the channel.
2) enough active ops to enforce said policy or rules. (replace people
on the ops list who are no longer around or inactive)
these 2 things quickly will give us time to work towards the other issues.

Security Assurance in FOSS: Request for contribution
by Andre Haralevi
Dear members of the Fedora project,
we kindly ask for your participation in our survey on security assurance in
free/open source software.
Security assurances are confidence building activities through structured
design processes, documentation, and testing.
By participating in our survey you contribute to ongoing research with the
aim to make free/open source software more secure.
It will not take more than 10 minutes of your valuable time for our 21
questions.
Our survey is online for the next two weeks until July 1 at:
http://survey.mi.fu-berlin.de/public/survey.php?name=fosssecurity
The survey is anonymous.
Please find the results of the survey on the project page during July:
https://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/w/SE/FOSSSecuritySurvey
For further information about Open Source research at the Research Group
Software Engineering at Freie Universitaet Berlin, please visit:
https://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/w/SE/FOSSHome
Thank you in anticipation,
Sascha Rasmussen, Alexander Kunze, and Andre Haralevi
In case you participate in more than one FOSS project, please fill out the
questionnaire for the one where security is most important, or fill out one
questionnaire per project.
Thank you!

This with my dsdt in the maistream kernel (as missing code) was
just a joke. I think the kernel shouldn't collect fixes for broken
dsdt tables but just provide a way to insert a custom one at boot
time. I think it is poor judgemnt to incorporate anyones dsdt (or
other system specific code like bioses) in the mainstream kernel.
Just in case if this could have happended: at boot the kernel
should look throught a register with broken dsdt tables and apply
the "correct" one. and with new bios - should we incorporate our
new dsdt? Should the kernel check (on the millions of pcs it runs
on) for my/anyones dsdt? This is insane!

Orphaning package
by Marc Wiriadisastra
Hey all,
I am struggling at the moment with time commitments in real life and my
new job. I need to orphan one of the demanding packages that I have.
That package is liferea which has upgraded their package and I haven't
had the time at the moment to have a good look at it.
If you want to be the packager of it please email me directly since I
haven't been able to keep up with any of the conversations lately.
Cheers,
Marc

Ugly broken paths in F7 to F8 upgrade
by Dmitry Butskoy
I am upgrading now from Fedora 7 to Fedora 8, and have discovered that
some packages in Fedora 8 is "earlier" than in my current Fedora 7.
First of all, please, do not offer me the idea to upgrade to the latest
Fedora 9 . I live in some production environment, and for some stability
reasons prefer to switch to Fedora 8 (for the next half-year until it
EOF'ed).
The packages which affect me are:
Fedora 7 Fedora 8
ctapi-cyberjack-3.0.5-1.fc7 ctapi-cyberjack-3.0.4-1.fc8.i386.rpm
ctapi-cyberjack-pcsc-3.0.5-1.fc7 ctapi-cyberjack-pcsc-3.0.4-1.fc8.i386.rpm
dbus-python-0.82.3-1.fc7 dbus-python-0.82.0-2.fc8.i386.rpm

rpmlint-0.83-1.fc7 rpmlint-0.82-2.fc8.noarch.rpm
rsync-2.6.9-6.fc7 rsync-2.6.9-5.fc8.i386.rpm
Perhaps there are much more in the repos (which I don't use).
What the current status of such issues? Is it a correct state? IOW, can
I leave things as is (ie. continue to use the correspond F7 packages) or
should install F8 versions manually?
(Note, that I don't use anaconda, since prefer just "yum upgrade" + some
little manual interventions).

Dmitry Butskoy

Help building rpm, works with f8 fails in f9
by Jerry Williams
I could use some help trying to figure out why a package builds just fine on
Fedora 8 but fails on Fedora 9
Fedora 8 build output looks like:
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/crrcsim-0.9.9'
+ desktop-file-install --vendor= --dir=/usr/share/applications
--add-category X-Red-Hat-Extra /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/CRRCsim.desktop
+ /usr/lib/rpm/find-debuginfo.sh /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/crrcsim-0.9.9
extracting debug info from ./crrcsim
2702 blocks
Fedora 9 looks like:
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/crrcsim-0.9.9'
+ desktop-file-install --vendor= --dir=/usr/share/applications
--add-category X-
Red-Hat-Extra /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/CRRCsim.desktop

find: invalid predicate `'
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.13280 (%install)
SPEC file looks like:

%description
Crrcsim is a model-airplane flight simulation program. Using it, you can
learn
how to fly model aircraft, test new aircraft designs, and improve your
skills by practicing on your computer.
It rules! The flight model is very realistic. The flight model parameters
are
calculated based on a 3D representation of the aircraft. Stalls are properly
modelled as well. Model control is possible with your own rc transmitter, or
any input device such as joystick, mouse, keyboard ...

I am not sure if this is the best place to post this message, if there is a
better list, please let me know.
Thanks is advance for any help!
