Dead package notice: freetype1
by Adam Jackson
freetype1 is gone from F12. Nobody's currently using it, and more
importantly nobody ought to be, anywhere, ever.

compat c++
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
I was just wondering, if there is a compat c++ compiler package (or
mode) available in fedora. The issue I encountered was that I got a lot
of compiler errors because of strdup() malloc() etc. usages in c++ files
without proper #include <legacy> stuff.
I am not a C++ expert, but I guess that there was a default behavior
change between g++ 3 and 4.
What I did was patching that package to get those #includes but as it
contains a c++ code generator I also had to patch that. Although it
seems to compile now, I still get zillions of "DO NOT CAST char* TO
string YOU FOOL" warnings (wasn't there an option to get rid of them
too?).
Any kind of compat mode would make things alot easier (besides bringing
the developers to write propert C++).

List of packages including country flags
by Kevin Kofler
OK, let's all collect the list.
These have already come up:
- kdebase-runtime (currently in a -flags subpackage, used at least 1. by the
keyboard layout switcher to represent a keyboard layout and 2. when
selecting the locale in System Settings to represent a country)
- deluge (currently getting ripped out because that was requested in a bug)
- gcompris
- freeciv
- xfce4-xkb-plugin
- ktorrent (same use as deluge, for geolocation of peers)
Icon themes, containing at least one flag (UN or other) to represent the
locale preferences (and I didn't check if there are other icons containing
flags):
- gnome-icon-theme (UN)
- bluecurve-icon-theme (3 countries, overlayed into a single icon)
- oxygen-icon-theme (UN)
- crystalsvg-icon-theme (2 countries, overlayed into a single icon)
Other KDE packages (yes, KDE ships multiple copies of flags, in slightly
different formats (PNG vs. SVG, sizes)):
- kdeedu (kgeography, that's the "geography learning app" I alluded to, the
flags are part of the information about countries it shows)
- kdeedu-marble (flags are shown in the properties for a place)
- kdegames (ksirk) (similar to FreeCiv in principle: the flags are used to
represent players, who choose a given nation; note that this game is
extra "fun" for the "politically correct" folks because it contains a map
of Earth with territories not quite matching actual country borders, see
the screenshot at
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/preview.php?preview=1&id=21450&file1=2145...
to get an idea)
- kde-plasma-translatoid (currently getting ripped out because the flags
were noticed and frowned upon during review, uses flags for languages)
That's 14 packages, and I'm sure there are more (if you know of any others,
feel free to reply).

unowned files and directories
by Thorsten Leemhuis
Hi!
I now and then check which files on my systems are not owned by any RPM
package. That often turns up a lot's of old and obsolete stuff that
sometimes eats space I'd like to free. During those checks I often find
lots of files and directories that obviously should be owned by some
packages but aren't.
So today I decided to track this a bit closer and do a fresh rawhide
install with standard settings into a VM and check which files and
directories were unowned using this command:
find / | grep -v -e '^/selinux' -e '^/dev' -e '^/proc' -e '^/sys' -e
'^/root' -e '^/home' -e '^/tmp' -e '^/var/cache/' -e '^/var/tmp/' |
LC_ALL=C xargs -L 250 rpm -qf | grep "not owned" | awk '{print $2}'
That resulted in round about 1800 unowned files and directories. You can
find the full list at http://www.leemhuis.info/files/fedora/unowned
Yes, maybe more stuff in /var should be filtered; same is true for
things like "lost+found". But the list is interesting nevertheless as
lot of things (random examples: "/etc/kde" or
"/usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/xsane") afaics should definitely be owned
by some package(¹).
But I'm a bit unsure what to do with the results. Filing bugs likely
would be huge amount of work as well as and never-ending task for a
small gain.
Options? Just ignore? Or will the automatic test scripts QA iirc plans
to set up check for things like that in the future?
CU
knurd
(¹) the list also leads to question like "why are there /.dbus and
/.pulse?" and "why is there a /etc/hosts.rpmnew right after install and
why does it look quite different"

Conflicts not being resolved
by Michael Schwendt
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Conflicts
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Conflicts#Other_Uses_of_Conflicts:
| As a general rule, Fedora packages must NOT contain any usage of the
| Conflicts: field.
| Keep in mind that implicit conflicts are NEVER acceptable.
| If your package conflicts with another package, then you must either
| resolve the conflict, or mark it with Conflicts:.
What happens so far is that packagers simply ignore it.
Again I see bz tickets from Nov 2008 which have not been responded to.
The page doesn't point out that missing "Conflicts" tags are bad.
Implicit conflicts are not detected prior to an RPM transaction check.
Typically, implicit conflicts cause tools like Yum to fail, leaving it
to the user to do the head-scratching and to remove packages manually.

Anybody interested in vpnc
by Tomas Mraz
Hi fellow packagers,
is anybody interested in maintaining vpnc in Fedora and EPEL? I'd like
to orphan it. I might stay as a comaintainer if you want.
