No mouse + keyb in X in latest rawhide + fix (selinux)
by Hans de Goede
Hi,
This might be a dup, and I'm a bit under the weather so in
no mood to search BZ. Anyways for other people who might hit
this if your mouse and keyb in X in rawhide all of a sudden are
gone, this is due to haldaemon not starting, which is caused
by some selinux issue. Setting selinux to permissive works
around this for me.
Regards,
Hans

update means only runlevel 1
by darrell pfeifer
i did an update this morning that took my machine from current rawhide
to a few koji updates. included were dracut, udev and i memory serves
me right, a minor initscript cleanup.
now i can't get any farther than runlevell 1. going to even runlevel 3 hangs.
any suggestions of what might be broken?
(sorry for the brevity, typing on an inconvenient box)

disk woes: revive w/o-reboot after SATA "START_STOP FAILED"?
by Jim Meyering
Hello,
I've just returned one relatively new disk drive[*],
and hope I'm not about to return another...
[*] It was a 1TB Samsung ecogreen, and some strenuous testing
would reliably provoke I/O errors which would apparently
damage the disk enough to force an increase in the SMART
Reallocated_Sector_Ct metric. My final test added about 600
to that count. Of all my other disks, some over 5 years old,
only 1 had a single Reallocated_Sector_Ct. The rest were 0.
Anyhow, this time it's my newest drive, a 1.5TB Samsung.
Most of the time it is spun down, but spins up and works fine
when I need it, which is once a day or so, for backups.
But today, there was no trace of it at all.
/dev/sdb had disappeared altogether. Ominous.
This is up-to-date F12 w/stock untainted 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64
on an Intel Q9450.

So here's the question: is it possible to get /dev/sdb back
without rebooting?

I am an unresponsive maintainer?
by Paul Wouters
Hi,
I just heard I might be put through the "unresponsive maintainer process"
in Fedora? I'm a little confused as I've never received emails on this,
and I'm always on irc and read fedora-devel and still perform very regular
package updates.
Can someone tell me what's going on, and forward me emails I'm apparently
missing?
Thanks,
Paul

RFC: Remove write permissions from executables
by Miloslav Trmač
Hello,
In Fedora 12 several daemons (e.g. dhclient) were modified to drop
unnecessary capabilities, most importantly the "dac_override"
capability, allowing the daemon to ignore file permission bits. This,
in combination with removing some permissions from important system
directories and files (such as /etc/shadow), has restricted the amount
of damage that can be done by exploiting such daemons.
We can extend the protection to all executables by a simple addition to
redhat-rpm-config (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556897 ).
After applying this patch, executable files in all rebuilt packages
would not be writeable, most often using mode 0555.
I don't expect any problems from this change (it can affect only daemons
that drop capabilities, and executables owned by other users than root);
in the unusual case where making the executeable not writeable did case
some problems, the packager could override the change by explicitly
specifying the required permissions using %attr in the %files section of
the spec file.
What do you think?
Thank you,
Mirek

abrt not working in current Rawhide?
by Adam Williamson
Just checking if I'm the only one - I can't find a bug report, though
I'll probably file one. abrt doesn't seem to work in current Rawhide.
The daemon and applet both claim to be running, but I never get an abrt
pop-up when anything crashes (which happens a lot in current Rawhide...)
I think I have all necessary packages installed:
[adamw@adam ~]$ rpm -qa | grep abrt
abrt-plugin-sosreport-1.0.4-1.fc13.x86_64
abrt-gui-1.0.4-1.fc13.x86_64

abrt-addon-python-1.0.4-1.fc13.x86_64
abrt-1.0.4-1.fc13.x86_64
let me know if anything seems to be missing. thanks.
