Minified JS and CSS in Node packages

Looking at the source to llparse reveals that it contains minified versions of lodash, source-map, js-yaml, diff, and snprintf-js. The corresponding source code also appears to be present, but my understanding of Fedora policy is that the minified versions should not be in a Fedora source package. I suspect other packages in the Node ecosystem have the same problem. Would it be possible to ensure that Node packages contain only actual source code, as in “the preferred form for making modifications” (quote from GNU GPL, I forget which version)? -- Sincerely, Demi Marie Obenour (she/her/hers)

LibreOffice packages

Hey, as you've probably seen, the LibreOffice RPMS have recently been orphaned, and I thought it would be good to explain the reasons behind this. The Red Hat Display Systems team (the team behind most of Red Hat’s desktop efforts) has maintained the LibreOffice packages in Fedora for years as part of our work to support LibreOffice for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. We are adjusting our engineering priorities for RHEL for Workstations and focusing on gaps in Wayland, building out HDR support, building out what’s needed for color-sensitive work, and a host of other refinements required by Workstation users. This is work that will improve the workstation experience for Fedora as well as RHEL users, and which, we hope, will be positively received by the entire Linux community. The tradeoff is that we are pivoting away from work we had been doing on desktop applications and will cease shipping LibreOffice as part of RHEL starting in a future RHEL version. This also limits our ability to maintain it in future versions of Fedora. We will continue to maintain LibreOffice in currently supported versions of RHEL (RHEL 7, 8 and 9) with needed CVEs and similar for the lifetime of those releases (as published on the Red Hat website). As part of that, the engineers doing that work will contribute some fixes upstream to ensure LibreOffice works better as a Flatpak, which we expect to be the way that most people consume LibreOffice in the long term. Any community member is of course free to take over maintenance, both for the RPMS in Fedora and the Fedora LibreOffice Flatpak, but be aware that this is a sizable block of packages and dependencies and a significant amount of work to keep up with. Distro feature macros: a replacement for many %if rhel/fedora/amzn

Myself and a few others over in Amazon Linux land have been musing for a while about possible improvements that could be done in Fedora to help make Fedora and downstream distributions (such as CentOS Stream and Amazon Linux) have an easier and simpler time having their individual opinionated choices. The idea of working out something that could sit in Fedora is that then this can work for Fedora enabling/disabling certain features, as well as making things like ELN easier, and seed the possibility of an ALN (Amazon Linux Next) all from the same upstream Fedora packaging repositories. It’d also make things like EPEL, or a hypothetical Extra Packages for Amazon Linux a whole bunch simpler as the series of if conditions in a SPEC file could more easily illustrate intent. Simply looking at the subset of Fedora packages that make up Amazon Linux 2023, if you "grep -r '%if.*rhel' */*.spec|wc -l” there’s ~850 matches across ~360 packages, and searching for "grep -r '%if.*amzn' */*.spec|wc -l” there’s ~330 matches across ~240 packages. One reason we haven’t gone and upstreamed all these if conditions is that it just seems… hacky. Instead, we’d much rather move to some better mechanism that ends up with either distro level macros about having features/packages (such as "%if 0%{?distro_has_gtk1}” or "%if 0%{?distro_feature_gtk1}”) thus making it useful for Fedora changes in enabling and disabling functionality across releases. After all, even across the subset of Fedora packages we have in AL2023, "grep -r '%if.*fedora} [><=]' */*.spec|wc -l”, i.e. Fedora version specific changes are at ~240 matches across ~120 packages, and especially for things where it gates things like python2 support, we could simplify the bconds across a distro *significantly* and make it *much* easier to turn these on and off across Fedora releases and downstream distros. Intent to retire OpenCOLLADA

For anyone who didn't see discussion on the list OpenCOLLADA upstream hasn't seen a commit since 2018 and no one has stepped up to port it to pcre2. I tried to convert it to use the bundled pcre as a stop gap to keep it going a bit further but it installs the library instead of building statically. Anyone good with CMake could fix this but at this point I think it's just time to retire it. If anyone wants to take it over let me know otherwise I plan to retire early next week. Thanks, Richard

[HEADS UP] Fedora 39 Python 3.12 rebuilds to start in a side tag this week

Hello, in order to deliver Python 3.12, we are running a coordinated rebuild in a side tag. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Python3.12 We anticipate starting this rebuild sometime this week. If you see a "Rebuilt for Python 3.12" (or similar) commit in your package, please don't rebuild it in regular rawhide or another rawhide side tag. If you need to, please let us know, so we can coordinate. If you'd like to build a package after we already rebuilt it, you should be able to build it in the side tag via: on branch rawhide: $ fedpkg build --target=f39-python $ koji wait-repo f39-python --build <nvr> Note that it will take a while before all the essential packages are rebuilt, so don't expect all your dependencies to be available right away. LXQt Spin: packages not updated since April 2022

Hi, I was testing an instance of the LXQt Spin in a VM and saw that after updating all packages, the LXQt packages are still with version 1.1.0, which is from April 2022. Current is 1.3.0. I read the LXQt team does not maintain itself, and 1.2.0 and 1.3.0 seem to not contain critical security issues or so, but does someone keep checking if something urgent comes up that requires action? (security or compatibility issues, broken processes/automation at maintainers, ...) Regards, Chris

On the other hand some language scripts are not covered by DejaVu and hence have other default fonts. (A few languages like Chinese, Japanese and Korean, as well as Gurmukhi, Sinhala, and emoji are already using Noto fonts by default for some time.) This situation leads to inconsistencies in text rendering on applications and desktops, particularly when mixing different character sets. Further Noto fonts bring some further advantages: the fonts are generally higher quality and support variable fonts for most scripts, making them more compact. This change aims to provide better experience and consistent text rendering across more languages by replacing DejaVu with Noto as the general system default set of fonts. Since this change aims to switch non-variable fonts to variable fonts, it may not works with legacy applications as expected such as missing some variants. in that case, you can install non-variable fonts packages. the package name will be similar and simply drop `-vf` from the variable fonts packages. == How To Test == * This change can be simply tested by `fc-match` command like `fc-match sans:lang=<your langauge>`, `fc-match serif:lang=<your language>` and `fc-match monospace:lang=<your language>`.
