You should assume host compromise because patched firmware can fiddle with
things like setuid bits. Actually you should assume that you'll never use
the device again and have to bin it. For most universities and many other
environments thats probably worst case.
Precisely, though sometimes host compromise without actually destroying
the writer may be a bigger problem than just a damaged drive (which,
with a bit of luck, could be brought back to life).
