Hi all,
I hope this is the right mail list to raise this question. I'm running
FC5 and both mozilla and firefox are installed. But when I removed
mozilla, yelp is also removed. I think there is a bug here. Any
comments?

As I understand it, Yelp internally makes use of Mozilla's Gecko engine
for rendering and whatnot.

Can it use firefox instead?

I didn't follow the entire thread, but I believe the long term plan is
that applications needing an HTML rendering component will switch to use
Xulrunner:

When this is scheduled to happen I do not know.

Firefox is not an application suite like Mozilla. It's just a big
binary blob. You cannot use the Firefox's rendering engine in your
application.

Actually you can... '--with-mozilla=firefox' will do just that for
yelp...

Thank you, Pete. Although I remember (not sure) Ubuntu has only
firefox installed by default. But yelp is still usable.

Actually, Galeon and most other things these days can compile against
firefox, but Fedora seems to lack a firefox-devel making such at thing
impossible.
Firefox's build system was a nightmare last I checked. I attempted to
figure out how to get a firefox-devel package built a year or two
back... and gave up.

There are good news about this, it's finally happening. XULRunner 1.8
works pretty well (I actually made some experimental rpms). Yelp,
epiphany and the other gtkmozembed applications should run just fine
with it.
I think running firefox on the top of xulrunner requires 1.9 though
(which will be released 2007 Q1).

IIRC the release is planned for Q1 2007 because it is based on Geckos 1.9
branch. You can get a stable preview release (still based on 1.8) at the
above URL.
