Just a status update and a question to get some input.
Been working on and off on the Fedora hardware project and the items
required for the project discussed back in May. Blah Blah Blah, going
along great blah blah blah will have a beta site out end of July early
August *knock on wood* blah blah blah just Need to iron out some very
ugly bugs and posting comments on configurations done first. hope
everyone will contribute their thoughts now and then.
My brain is throwing red flags up on the issue of site registration and
whether or not it's need. I don't like the idea of having it. So I'm
looking for suggestions because I don't want the site to become: a
forum, or huge list of flame wars. Site is just a database of supported
hardware and working configurations to get not supported hardware
working. At least that was my take on the project. But if it must be
there, I was thinking just for adding and posting configurations.
Looking for thoughts, Ideas, or concerns.

I don't think you have any choice. If you don't have registration then
you will have viagra and penis extender adverts posted all over it by
robots 8(
If it has some kind of structured submission (say from a program users
can run) that might be one way to avoid registration for most situations

B/c it's pretty much impossible for the blind to use those services.

If you do *PLEASE* remember to include an alternative method. While it
gets rid of robots it also eliminates blind people quite effectively too

One mail and two people correcting my mistake - must have struck a nerve
here...
Anyway, I wrote "require a login" - as in you do the graphics in addition to
having a login for regular visitors and people that for one or another reason
can't read the graphics. Lynx is still very important when you try to bring
up a box and X doesn't work...
Unfortunately many people are turned off by the idea of having to register and
everything - so offering them to identify a image is a good way to make sure
that there is at least a person behind the keyboard...

One of the worries I have with a registration system but a session is a
session is a session. I was thinking of Public Key type authentication.
Just use your name and key and it will authenticate you but I would need
a copy of everyone's key and in order to get that you would have to
register.
I then thought about a simple 2 user system. An admin and a general user
account and control it that way. But there are obvious faults in that
method.
Why not do what many of the other websites do and ask the user to
type
in a string that you render into a image?

Maybe I'll flash the bigger picture that was mention before everyone
eyes. I believe it was talked about that down the road hardware
information could be, if the user decides, sent after an install. No
registration would be required. But that is down the road.

That wouldn't help the people who couldn't install...
That's part of the purpose, right? Or is it just a "this hardware
worked" list?

True it wouldn't. But don't you usually check if the majority of your
hardware is supported before you try a new OS? I'm guessing you are
talking about people who are new to Linux. People who have used it
before will know "oh my sound card works, but last time I had to mess
this or that file to get the game port work" Your right though, it
wouldn't help those who blindly did an install. But I hope that most
people do their research... if so this is a tool for them.
I have to remind myself that not to limit it to just that though. Could
also be an incredible tool for developers and hardware vendors alike.
Developers can look at it and say "oh this chipset needs such and such
of a modification done" and fix the problem so it works out of the box.
Vendors could look at it and say "WTF, where is our support? Let's get
our butts going" :)
So it's an all around tool. *Hopefully*

No. Most people just try to install, and insult the OS if they have any
trouble.

Hahahaha.
We have to remember that tech savvy people are a *very* low percentage
of the global population. And the same for people with "common sense".
I'll leave it to others to say which has a larger population.

Hi, there was some discussion recently on the hal mailing list about a
community-wide hardware project

that could integrate with the hal and Project Utopia pieces that is in
development right now.

A quick and simple ahck that I would suggest is to adapt the hardware
registration piece from the up2date client (llok for a start in
hardware.py). Ie, the folloowing gives a pretty complete picture of what
hardware is available on a particular system.
/usr/share/rhn/up2date_client/hardware.py
Now, you can start from there and put together a tool that submits that
information to an URL of some sort. Then you get to play on the backend
with avoiding abuses from folks submitting over and over the same hardware
profile.
Or, you can take it one step furter - put together a quick hack that
allows people to mark every item on the list whether it works or not
before they submit the list.
