Hi there,
I was forwarded a development thread from the 389 DS project [0]. They
are considering updating their default representation of user identities
away from givenName-surname to "legalName" and "displayName".
Right now, by default users have a givenName and mandatory surname, but
that isn't really suitable for many cultures where it's not that simple,
or people who only have one name. There are also cases where people
don't need or want to be identified by their legal name, for example,
divorcees or trans people who haven't had a name change, or people who
need to hide their identity.
So, instead of givenName + surname, they want to change the default to
have 'displayName' and an optional 'legalName' instead. Legal name
would be your full name, no matter what length or format or ordering;
display name would be how you want your name to show up around the system.
I think it would be great if we could show support for this change
either on the mailing list thread [0], or by contacting the developers
directly.
Hope you're having a lovely day,
Charelle.

Hi Charelle, thanks for raising this to our attention.
Looking at the thread, I see overwhelming support for the feature, as
well as helpful UI/UX feedback added by Máirín. We'll keep an eye on the
thread, but from my POV, I have nothing more to add.
Let us know if you need any other help with this.
