Saxon, FOP, and xmlto
by Tommy Reynolds
Hello, List!
While thinking about finetuning our toolchain, bringing it more into
line with what the Red Hatters are using, it looks as if FOP is the
future. Along with that, the most up-to-date XSLT tool seems to be
saxon. This leads me to the questions:
1) Has anyone here personally used saxon? Can you share your
favorite command line with us?
2) Does anyone know when / if FOP will become part of the mainline
distro?
Cheers

Test of Docs Packaging
by Stuart Ellis
Just to confirm that I've now tried the packaging for example-tutorial,
and got the expected result :)
On a standard FC4 system:
- yum install rpm-build
- cvs up docs-common
- cvs up example-tutorial
- cd example-tutorial/
- make rpm
Produces: fedora-doc-example-tutorial-0.14-1.noarch.rpm
containing .xml, .omf, and .desktop files.
- sudo rpm -ivh fedora-doc-example-tutorial-0.14-1.noarch.rpm
Produces:
error: Failed dependencies:
fedora-doc-common is needed by
fedora-doc-example-tutorial-0.14-1.noarch

[Fwd: printing changes for FC5]
by Gavin Henry
Initial relnote for Printing.
See Tim's last question.

Subject: printing changes for FC5

Hi Gavin,
Sorry I didn't get to sending this to you yesterday.
Here are some noteworthy things that have changed in FC5:
o HPLIP is now included, and replaces HPOJ. HPLIP is the transport
mechanism for HP printers including OfficeJet multifunction
devices. It also includes an update version of the HPIJS inkjet
driver, and a new program `hp-toolbox' for monitoring the status of
attached devices (such as ink levels etc).
o ESP Ghostscript is now included instead of GPL Ghostscript. ESP
Ghostscript includes many cross-vendor fixes on top of GPL
Ghostscript.
o New major version of Ghostscript: ESP Ghostcript 8.15.1 included,
replacing GPL Ghostscript 7.07.
Do we need to mention things like that CUPS is now compiled using
-fstack-protector-all for better protection against stack overflow
security exploits?
Tim.

AFAIK, we are using PNG and EPS only for our graphics. I don't know of
any reason we cannot strip out JPEG handling.
Fedora doc folk, what think ye?

in your system , it's almost ok . But when you want
close any window ,particularly in word the three
option viz. save, discard , cancel are shown in coding
system. It's
difficult to understand .
I have think when all things

So, how it will?

Hi, I'm just back from vacation and catching up. Sorry if you didn't
know I was away, I was practicing Red Hat tradition of working like
crazy then disappearing for two weeks. I was not allowed to work on
Fedora stuff during my vacation. ;-)

Here is the page that we updated:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/FedoraDocsSchedule
We are now working from this page. I am trying out new formats for
these minutes that just highlight what happened.
Highlights:
===========
* First, temporary translation process is not at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/Translation
* Seeking, still seeking help with a gcj compiled FOP (and Saxon).
Anthony Green is helping us find a developer to fix our problems,
perhaps to carry the package into Fedora Extras.
* DocsRawhide is the nickname for the structure that is going to extract
all versions of a document from CVS (tagged by release and HEAD), build
them to all targets (HTML, PDF, RPM, etc.) in all languages, and make
these URLs available via a webpage. This process happens as a rolling
build, making it possible to distribute links to your latest documents
that are in CVS. We have hardware identified and are working out
technical responsibilities and scheduling to make this happen.
* Beat writer positions are starting to fill up with developers from
individual projects. You can still get yourself involved, working
directly with the developers. More at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/ReleaseNotes/Beats .
* We are doing out first MoinMoin Wiki to DocBook XML conversion for the
release notes based on a snapshot to be taken on 22 December. Wish us
luck! If you want to help, contact kwade(a)redhat.com.

Thanks to Mark correcting my ill-fated attempts to drop in a docs menu,
we're in business. The docs-common module is updated and if you "make
rpm" from that module and the example-tutorial module, you'll be able to
install both on your system and see a Documentation menu magically
appear! As mentioned before, yelp and khelpviewer will also see these
docs through scrollkeeper, but they are not as easy to find. Currently
the menu entry just calls "gnome-help <URI>", but this will be replaced
with "fedora-docviewer <URI>," which will point to a script that will
figure out which viewer is proper for the user's desktop environment,
and set the URI accordingly. Any assistance here would be gratefully
accepted. I think Mr. Laska is going to help me clean up these ugly
Makefiles, at which point they will be incorporated properly into
Makefile.common as necessary.

Minutes FDSCo 11 Oct 2005
by Paul W. Frields
Canonical schedule and tasks:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/FedoraDocsSchedule
Summary of Updates and New Tasks:
=================================
* Gavin will send emails this week soliciting beat writers and general
contributors to the wiki (and possibly CVS). Some of these writers will
hopefully help with the burgeoning need for guidebooks which are
currently being drafted on the wiki.
* New contributors should probably submit a CLA via
https://admin.fedora.redhat.com/accounts/ so they understand legal
requirements on Fedora work, even for docs. Docs work should also be
free of legal encumbrance.
* Stuart and others continue to be available on #fedora-wiki to help new
contributors. Stuart has posted his hours of availability at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/StuartEllis
* Paul has drafted packaging scripts in the example-tutorial CVS module.
He is still working on the fedora-doc-common RPM build, as well as word
from the redhat-menus maintainers on adding a "Documentation" menu back
into Fedora. (This menu does not supersede yelp/khelpviewer.) He will
need help (Tommy?) in making the Makefile additions i18n-compatible.
* Stuart and Paul will start sweeping out old bug cruft where possible.
