Self-Introduction: Edward Haddock
by Edward Haddock
Aloha all,
Edward R Haddock Jr here. I live in Wahiawa, Hawaii, USA. I am a
Satellite Systems Technician and Network Manager currently working for
BAE Systems at A Government Satellite Facility. My goals at this point
are not many. I am not a professional writer or editor at all. I would
like to help if I can. I can review documents for grammar/writing style
but am not technically savvy enough to do that side of things. I have
not worked on any projects prior to this so I am very new to it all.
Please be patient with me. I am adequate on the computer. I would say I
am a little above a novice and am definitely new to Fedora. I am very
good with Electronics and those types of things and currently working on
my computer science degree. My main hope here is to contribute to
something I feel is worthwhile. Open Source has inspired me and I use
Fedora Core 4. My GPG is...

Re: release notes translations for ISO due at 23:59 UTC 6 March
by Andrew Martynov
Hello, Karsten!
Unfortunally I`m not sure I will be able to prepare 100% ready translation
of Release Notes to Russian today before deadline.
I was too busy for primary job during last two weeks :(
So I will commit all changes and modify Makefile only after whole
translation will be make.
I`m asking you and all translators for advice:
Would it be corrent co include in ISO files 75-80% translated version?
Tomorrow (08 march) will be official holiday in Russia and I plan to
spend this day for translation of Fedora documentation.
Regards,
Andrew Martynov

Coreutils POSIX changes not documented in release notes
by Bill Rugolsky Jr.
Just discovered this.
IMHO, this massive breakage needs to be documented (in allcaps) in the
FC5 Release notes:
% info coreutils Standards
2.9 Standards conformance
=========================
In a few cases, the GNU utilities' default behavior is incompatible
with the POSIX standard. To suppress these incompatibilities, define
the `POSIXLY_CORRECT' environment variable. Unless you are checking
for POSIX conformance, you probably do not need to define
`POSIXLY_CORRECT'.
Newer versions of POSIX are occasionally incompatible with older
versions. For example, older versions of POSIX required the command
`sort +1' to sort based on the second and succeeding fields in each
input line, but starting with POSIX 1003.1-2001 the same command is
required to sort the file named `+1', and you must instead use the
command `sort -k 2' to get the field-based sort.
The GNU utilities normally conform to the version of POSIX that is
standard for your system. To cause them to conform to a different
version of POSIX, define the `_POSIX2_VERSION' environment variable to
a value of the form YYYYMM specifying the year and month the standard
was adopted. Two values are currently supported for `_POSIX2_VERSION':
`199209' stands for POSIX 1003.2-1992, and `200112' stands for POSIX
1003.1-2001. For example, if you have a newer system but are running
software that assumes an older version of POSIX and uses `sort +1' or
`tail +10', you can work around any compatibility problems by setting
`_POSIX2_VERSION=199209' in your environment.
I don't see anything about it here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats
I was all excited about upgrading some servers to FC5, and this stops
that upgrade cold until every one of hundreds of locally written scripts,
some two decades old, are audited and "fixed."
Ugh, sometimes POSIX is just ridiculous.

Bill Rugolsky

Self-Introduction: Robert F. Chapman
by Robert F. Chapman
Robert F. Chapman
California, USA
Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer - Test Systems Development
Maxim Integrated Products
Goals:
Help make a difference in the Linux Community.
Give something back for all that has been gained from the many
contributors of Linux/Redhat Distro.
Too many times when reading documentation for the Fedora
Project, I have come across grammatical/spelling errors. For the most
part, I think all that have contributed have done a great job. I have
often wanted to send little snippets for correction, but don't know who
to send it to..
I would like to learn more about the process of distributed
documentation creation/maintenance, where more than one person is
working on a document. Also I would like to learn more about "Docbook"
and the methods used to create CSS enriched content documents.
Historical Qualifications:
Most of my qualifications for this group would be in the
technical writing that I have done for the company that I work for. I
manage an IT group for our engineering department. I have written many
technical and training documents for *nix and other Integrated Systems.
My Computer Skills are vast, and range from hardware to
software and Networking, Systems Integration, embedded controllers,
Micro controllers etc.. I have been working with computers since the
mid '70s and have watched computer/software technology blossom into what
it is today.
Other skills and hobbies include: Photography, Teaching,
programming (Assembly, C, PASCAL, PHP, HTML, PERL, JAVA etc..), in
general a technical nut! (techie)

Release Notes for fedora-release
by Paul W. Frields
Hi Jeremy,
Just as an FYI, the release-notes appear to be ready. We have the
"en" [sic] version, and the following translations ready to go, to be
generated by "make html" and "make txt":
* it
* ja_JP
* pt_BR
* zh_CN
It looks like there will be a "ru" version and a "fr" version available
on the Web shortly, hopefully before 15 March. Some of us should be
available in #fedora-docs over the next few hours if needed.
Both docs-common/ and release-notes/ are tagged 'FC-5-GOLD-for-iso' for
your convenience. :-) I've tested the build process in FC4 and
FC5/Rawhide (current as of ~1800 UTC today), WORKSFORME!

The great news is that msgmerge had no problems handling the change
itself. So all the generated XML is good to go with the change,
everything still builds just fine. Hurrah!

HA! I've been staring at that warning and ignoring it for three-plus
years now without ever thinking about fixing it. Talk about the power
of the tribe.
