Proposal for every WG to send a short summary *to other WGs directly*
by Honza Horak
Hi working groups members,
since we have learned on Flock that new Fedora working groups do not
communicate with each other much (or enough), I'd like to propose the
following:
Every working group will time to time (e.g. weekly) send short summary
about what they did / were talking about directly to mailing lists of
other working groups + to devel(a)fp.o. Really only a short summary with
links where one can find details.
I tried to collect such info from the meeting logs and mailing lists for
the last few weeks for Env and Stacks WG:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/env-and-stacks/2014-August/0004...
I found many notes are really worth spreading beyond groups' borders,
but it takes too much time for one person to collect all the
information. Thus, proposing to "do a summary once per group and share
with other groups".
Another benefit would be that Matt would have better content for his 5tiftw.
I don't think we need to sync about date or frequency, just remembering
to send a direct mail if anything interesting is done/discussed should
work fine.
List of proposed MLs to send this summary to:
server(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
desktop(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
cloud(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
env-and-stacks(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
devel(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
Comments, ideas or better solutions are welcome as usually, but I might
be offline until Sunday, so do not expect any answers from me in that
time :)
Cheers,
Honza

can someone from WG attend the EPEL meeting today?
by Jens-Ulrik Petersen
Hi,
The EPEL meeting later today (Friday 16:00 UTC) will discuss
EPEL.next again (EPIC). I would attend but it is rather late
for me (1am in Japan), is it possible someone from the WG
could attend on our behalf to help get our ideas/concerns/input also
included in the discussion.
It seems from the previous (first) meeting [1] last week that they
are currently leaning towards (one or more) faster moving rolling-release repos.
This will certainly be an improvement but I feel it is not flexible
enough to provide long-term support for multiple versions of stacks.
eg I would certainly like to make multiple versions of Haskell ghc available
for EPEL/EPIC over the whole life-time, even though perhaps only
the EPEL and latest EPIC branch would see continuing maintenance and updates.
Rolling release seems to be the exact weakness of EPEL so replicating
that in EPIC seems like a bad idea to me.
A counter-point might be that branches is too much work
but really it is no different from Fedora branches, which also become EOL.
Jens

Other WGs' monitoring from 1st till 26th August
by Honza Horak
As promissed on the last meeting, this is $subject:
Workstation WG:
* Bad BZ performance when reporting -- removing gnome-abrt?
ABRT maintainer says we should rather fix it
shortened reporting discussed, more discussion about workflow
* Langdon White's "Fedora for Developers"
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COAeCYSxEQk>
<https://langdon.fedorapeople.org/flock-2014-preso.html<
proposal to hold Gnome version for 2 releases (mostly disagreeing on
the ML)
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/desktop/2014-August/010108.html>
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/desktop/2014-August/010114.html>
quite a lot of ideas that are based on Langdon's view:
"developer on Linux" which is [usually] distinctly different from a
"Linux developer".
Why mac is prefered over linux - because "it just works"
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/desktop/2014-August/010199.html>
Fedora Workstation's real value will be how it integrates developer tools
with multiple desktop environments!
* Default pacakges installed discussion (firewall related; proposal not
to include firewall-config, a graphical tool for firewall); long and
heated discussion.
*
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/desktop/2014-August/010182.html>
A proposal related to gnome apps -- some concepts can be general
enough.
* Desktop WG not very happy about copr (slow, overloaded):
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/desktop/2014-August/010244.html>
They think about moving the effort of testing the new version of
Gnome back to koji and make users to use F21 instead of providing
testing coprs.
* Say goodbye to start.fedoraproject.org?
<https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/desktop/2014-August/010265.html>
Server WG:
* rolekit on the way, missing database role
* cockpit seems to be in a good shape for alpha and beta seems also
good.
Cloud WG:
* fedora to have a registry or not?
* vagrant packaging will be needed
* discussions and legal issues with some other cloud companies
(Rackspace, GCE, HP)
Base WG:
* splitting packages to ship config files in *-config subpackage and
ship those files also in /usr/share/factor/etc/*
eventually /etc is minimal or even empty
focusing on packages that are supposed to "just work", things like
apache, which need some admin action, might not be compatible with
this new scheme
<http://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-meeting/2014-08-22/fedora_base_de...>
General:
* final texts for prerelease -- alpha is approaching.
Honza
Footnote: if every group does some short summary weekly/biweekly, others
could just quickly read it to stay tuned -- I'll probably propose
something like that soon.

fedora.next joint session at flock
by Matthew Miller
Sorry, this isn't last minute yet, is it? :)
Earlier this year at DevConf, we did a session on Fedora.next, with an
overview presentation followed by a 3 minute report from each WG, and a
panel discussion. We're aiming to do this again at Flock, with a big joint
session on Friday.
Marcela, you represented Env & Stacks at DevConf -- do you want to do the
updated version?
