Hello EPEL packagers.
More and more of you are asking for Python packages to be added into EPEL 8.
I see that in some cases, the Python 2 subpackage is added as well, because it
is possible. While there is absolutely no policy whatsoever that would forbid
this in EPEL 8, I personally beg you not to do that, unless it is absolutely
necessary.
Python 2 upstream support ends in 2 months (minus 8 days).
Python 2 support in RHEL 8 ends in 2024 (IIRC).
RHEL/EPEL 8 support ends in 100 years (give or take).
By adding Python 2 packages, you are creating a technical debt that will need to
be resolved in couple years. Avoid this problem early. Don't add them. Pretty
please.
