Hi all,
Over the next few months, I decided to work on a new project I thought
would be interesting, both with a high value and also an opportunity to
practice building a full-stack application. I wanted to introduce it
here and also put out a call for collaboration if anyone was interested
in working on this together.
I've named the project "Rochester Fuerte". Its intention is to be an
application to list and display hispanic businesses in Rochester, NY to
help people support immigrant businesses during Hispanic Awareness Month
(Sept. 15 - Oct. 15). The political rhetoric today around immigrants is
increasingly difficult, and I felt like we could do more to support
hard-working immigrants inside of our own communities (a kind of
protest, perhaps). Being more technically-inclined, I thought this would
be a fun and valuable way to express that, of using technical powers for
good.
The project will be open source, and I've set up a GitHub repo already
for it:
https://github.com/jwflory/rochester-fuerte ¹
There, you can find a project board with some issues with
decision-making questions about the project and how to make the next steps.

I don't have a lot of experience building a full-stack application, so
even if you have opinions, that would be a helpful contribution to the
early phase of this project.
My intent was to work on this independently, gradually, over time, but
if you are interested in collaborating or working on it together, I'd
love to have a conversation with how you get involved and we can work
together. I set up an IRC channel on Freenode (#rochester-fuerte), also
bridged with Matrix, if you'd like to join and talk more about the project.

My goal is to have this application ready in time for Hispanic Awareness
Month in the US, sometime between September 15 and October 15.
Anyways, I wanted to do a short intro for this project here and put it
out there, in case anyone else would be interested in working on this
over some of their free time this summer and into next semester.
Thanks!
