Bug ID: 1981903 Summary: CVE-2021-35517 apache-commons-compress: excessive memory allocation when reading a specially crafted TAR archive Product: Security Response Hardware: All OS: Linux Status: NEW Component: vulnerability Keywords: Security Severity: medium Priority: medium Assignee: security-response-team@redhat.com Reporter: gsuckevi@redhat.com CC: dblechte@redhat.com, dfediuck@redhat.com, eedri@redhat.com, hhorak@redhat.com, java-maint-sig@lists.fedoraproject.org, java-sig-commits@lists.fedoraproject.org, jorton@redhat.com, mgoldboi@redhat.com, michal.skrivanek@redhat.com, mizdebsk@redhat.com, mkoncek@redhat.com, sbonazzo@redhat.com, sherold@redhat.com, SpikeFedora@gmail.com, yturgema@redhat.com Target Milestone: --- Classification: Other
When reading a specially crafted TAR archive, Compress can be made to allocate large amounts of memory that finally leads to an out of memory error even for very small inputs. This could be used to mount a denial of service attack against services that use Compress' tar package.

--- Doc Text *updated* by RaTasha Tillery-Smith rtillery@redhat.com --- A flaw was found in apache-commons-compress. When reading a specially crafted TAR archive, Compress can allocate large amounts of memory that leads to an out-of-memory error for small inputs. This flaw allows the mounting of a denial of service attack against services that use Compress' TAR package. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to system availability.

--- Comment #2 from Garrett Tucker gtucker@redhat.com --- After analysis, a Denial of Service attack is possible via excessive memory allocated caused by a crafted tar archive. An ongoing method of allocating an array then trying to fill it, combined with a lack of checks of PAX header value size allowed for excessive memory allocation. Thus a specially crafted archive could force excessive memory allocation impacting availability of a system.
This flaw has been fixed in Version 1.21
