KDE ate my sound card! :(

Hi, my sister has MS-1221 (PR200) laptop that I need to fix for her so that Skype works. The issues were - webcam didn't work - audio didn't work on skype I installed 2.6.31 kernel - that fixed webcam issue now cheese and skype, cheese and other apps worked ok with webcam. After installing new Skype 2.1 beta sound didn't work until I disabled in skype "Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels", after that it worked without problems. Then I tried using skype (and other audio recording applications on Fedora) but couldn't record audio from internal microphone, but when I connected external microphone audio recording (and skype) worked. So I had everything working ok, except that I couldn't record from internal microphone, which wasn't such a big issue, but I still wanted to try and fix it. I googled around and tried a few parameters for snd-hda-intel module, by issuing "rmmod snd-hda-intel -f" and then loading module with different options. Whatever I tried internal microphone still didn't work, but that was acceptable. I was doing all configuration while in Gnome, and now I had working audio and video for skype, and also working audio recording (via external mic) and working webcam for cheese, skype and other applications that use webcam. Then I switched into KDE, without restart, just log off and login to KDE. KDE immediately popped up a window saying: KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed: * Output: HDA Intel, INTEL HDMI (HDMI Audio Output) And now sound was gone! I tried reloading snd-hda-intel module, logging back to gnome, restarting... nothing! There is absolutely no sound output! Now can I troubleshoot and fix this? Why and how can KDE interfere with PulseAudio so much that it also messes up sound in Gnome?!? This has really pissed me off! And I returned laptop to my sister in worst state than she game it to me :( Any suggestions are more than welcome, so please give any suggestions you have. Also if you need more info just tell me what do you need. Cheers! kde-4.3.1 networkmanager applet

Just updated to 4.3.1. I see I now have some kde networkmanager applet in the panel. Clicking on it, it shows grayed out, 'applet in passive mode'. I'm guessing that's cause I'm still using nm-applet? Maybe try again to see if it likes my WPA2 setup at home. I guess I could simply kill nm-applet to test? Don't need to restart anything?

Centos x86_64

Hello, I just try to setup a Centos x86_64 system, on the web I found the note: Note to x86_64 users: You may have to enable both x86_64 and i386 repos. panel does not hide in kaffeine

I watched a movie last night, and noticed that when kaffeine is set to full screen the panel will not hide. I'm sure this used to work.

KRDC URL format

I'm trying to launch KRDC directly into a session, as opposed to launching, typing in the host/ip and then typing in the username. I've gotten `krdc rdp://192.168.1.8` to work such that I just need to type in the username, but I would really like to get the functioning equivalent of `krdc rdp://Arthur%20Pemberton@192.168.1.8` to work. But that asks me to setup the host AND enter the username. Anyone have any ideas? -- Fedora 10 (www.pembo13.com)

How to use strigi

Hello Can someone help me with Strigi setup? All I want to have is *fast desktop search* based on filename & file content. I do not want to rate or tag my files. So, I guess I don't need Nepomuk. But, is this possible? I'm running KDE 4.3 on Fedora 11. regards, Syam

KMail forwarding

When I go to Message=>Forward in kmail-1.12.0 (KDE 4.3.0) I get Forward->With Custom Template (no custom templates) and it seems I cannot forward email this way. Can't get Firefox to act as default browser

Hi: fc10 x86_64 running kde 4.3 from updates. I used to have Firefox as default browser. Now web links from Thunderbird always get Konq. Within Firefox, Preferences > Advanced > System Defaults says that Firefox is already my default browser. Settings > Preferred Applications > Web Browser can be set to Firefox, but gets reset to 'Custom' with all the options greyed out and the Command shown as '/usr/lib64/firefox-3.0.13/firefox "%s"' I haven't tried the script given here http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials/Modify_KDE_defaults which seems to be intended for cases in which the System Settings route is inconvenient and looks like overkill for my case as a sole user. Any suggestions appreciated. John P
