new kde on f13 is very noisy!
by Chris Rouch
Over the weekend yum pulled in the newest version of kde for f13
(4.5.2 I think). Since I rebooted and logged in my laptop seems to
have the fan going most of the time. Gkrellm shows both CPUs are doing
something, and top confirms that kwin and plasma desktop are each
using between 10% and 30% CPU. For comparison on my f12 desktop at
work they use between 2 and 5% cpu. I don't know what the used before
the upgrade, but I do know the fan was usually off except when the
machine was loaded.
This happens with only one window (firefox), and that only having a
couple of tabs open.
Is this something I can change? If so, where do I need to look?
Thanks,
Chris

Performance degradation after KDE runs for sometime
by Armelius Cameron
Hello,
I've been noticing that KDE performance degrades after it runs for a while on
my machine. Since I am the only user, I usually never log off, and just let KDE
runs for days at a time (I just lock the screen when I have to leave the
desktop). I do restart some applications, e.g kontact, kopete, Firefox just in
case I need to login to my mail (IMAP) or IM services from another location.
After a day or two, I would notice that Desktop switching is not as
responsive. Scrolling the list of folders or messages in my Kontact / Kmail
feel sluggish. Most obvious are desktop effect stuffs (e.g. show dashboard, show
all desktops). As anectdotal example, show dashboard would take 4-5 seconds
after I hit the shortcut before it happens. Displaying / drawing windows, for
examples, if I want to change my preferences in Firefox or Kmail or starting
xterm or konsole, is also less responsive. It's not unbearable, but the
degradation is there for sure.
Log off (restarting X) and re-login usually cure the problem. If I happen to be
too busy and have too many windows / apps open, I can still bear this for a
while, so it's probably not show stopper, but it's rather annoying.
I am running F13 - x86_64, fully updated. "Help --> About KDE" shows KDE 4.5.2
is installed. I am using proprietary nVidia driver from RPMFusion, running
dual-desktop (twinview). I don't think my hardware is the problem since it's
rather beefy machine: Nvidia Quadro NVS 295, 2 quad-core Intel i7 with 16 GB
RAM.
I am just wondering if anyone else see the same thing. I am curious if this is
KDE's problem, or X with/or Nvidia-driver interaction.
Thanks.

(Damn, again first the wrong identity :-))
Hi,
FYI: I'm using the nouveau driver - desktop effects (XRENDER) enabled - and
haven't seen any of the mentioned issues. Can it be that it's the proprietary
driver which is making trouble? If so, ask on the NVIDIA mailing list [1] if
others have the same issues.
Btw. Have you tried the vesa driver. It gives you a rather bad experience
(:-)) but at least you can test desktop effects (also XRENDER).

kdepim 4.5 for f14
by Andreas Petzold
Hi,
I'd like to try the new kdepim 4.5 and I'm pretty sure it was available from
kde-testing or kde-unstable for f13, but I can't find it in f14. Can kdepim 4.5
please be built for f14?
Thanks,
Andreas

strange orphans post F14 upgrade
by Chris Smart
Hi all,
Just wanted some wisdom from you all, I've just upgraded two F13
machines to F14, both of which run KDE.
The preupgrade guide suggests removing orphaned packages, but mine
includes kdelibs which doesn't seem like a good package to remove.
[chris@shem ~]$ package-cleanup --orphans
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, remove-with-leaves
akonadi-1.4.0-3.fc13.x86_64
kdeedu-marble-4.5.2-2.fc13.x86_64
kdeedu-marble-libs-4.5.2-2.fc13.x86_64
kdelibs-4.5.2-8.fc13.x86_64
kdelibs-common-4.5.2-8.fc13.x86_64
schroedinger-1.0.10-1.fc13.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-wacom-0.10.8-2.fc13.x86_64
Maybe it's safe to remove because there's another version somewhere or
something, but I thought I had better check. Thoughts please?
Thanks,
Chris

Problem with kontact on Fedora 14
by Fabio Canepa
Hi,
I've installed Fedora 14 and I've some problems with my IMAP account in
kontact.
1) Whenever I start kontact some mail are not retrieved correctly and there
is an "Unknow" group where these messages are shown with "Unknow" subject,
"unknown" sender and "unknown" date. If I read the "unknow" messages the
missing data are retrieved correctly and then the "unknow" group disappear.
2) Sometime when I start kontact i get the following error:
Error while retrieving messages.
The process for the imaps://XXXX protocol died unexpectedly.
I didn't have this problem on Fedora 13 updated with kde 4.5 form
update-testing. Is something related to qt 4.7 ?
Cheers,

Firefox under Fedora-14/KDE: annoying slide behaviour
by Timothy Murphy
The slide on the side of a Firefox window
(to move the visible portion up and down)
is behaving oddly on my Fedora-14/KDE laptop.
If I click on the down chevron, it moves to the bottom of the page,
rather than just to the following page-segment.
And it sometimes gets into a tizzy, where it starts running
to the bottom of the page, then to the top, then to the bottom,
and so on endlessly until I exit the site.
(And this often causes Firefox to exit,
even if there are other sites available.)
Has anyone experienced this?
And is there any way of stopping the slide
when it is remorselessly going down (or up)?

Folder view
by Emmett Culley
Sorry for the repeat posting. I never saw it show up on the list, so I am resending it.
One of my favorite features of the folder view was than when placing the cursor over an icon that represented a directory a small window would pop up with up to six icons that represented objects in that directory. You could scroll in the window and mouse over another directory, and another, such that you could drill down until you found the object you'd like to open. Very cool!
So what happened to that feature? Is there a way to re-enable it?
That feature disappeared when I upgraded from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14.
Also, is there any way to get rid of the select "+" symbol on each object in a folder view?
Regards,
Emmett
