Copy+Paste problem with Klipper
by Armelius Cameron
Hello,
I use a 3rd party software as a reference manager for papers / articles from
http://www.mendeley.com/. As far as I know, the software is written in QT. The
program lets me to "Copy Latex Citation", which I can then paste to an editor,
e.g. Kile, as, for example "\cite{author2000}"
The only issue I have is: when I hit "Copy Latex Citation" from that program,
then open Klipper from taskbar (left click), I can see that the correct string
is put into klipper and it's at the top of the list. However, when I hit mouse
middle click on Kile to paste it, what shows up is always the previous thing
that is in the clipboard, i.e. the second thing on Klipper.
To work around this issue, I always have to explicitly select the first thing
in Klipper clipboard before I can paste. So I have to do:
1. hit "Copy Latex citation"
2. Open Klipper with left mouse click, see that the item is already there on
the clipboard as the first item
3. Explicitly left-click the first item on Klipper
4. Paste on Kile with middle click.
I wonder why 2 & 3 are necessary. This doesn't seem to happen with other
program. So, is the problem with Mendeley's software, or with Klipper ? If
it's the former, then why it shows up correctly on Klipper clipboard ? Isn't
"Paste" (middle click) suppose to put whatever it is on the first item on
Klipper ?
Thanks for any help.

dreadfully slow kmail dragging the rest of the system down with it
by Dave Stevens
Hi,
I have kmail 1.13.2 running with KDE 4.4.2. Recently (for about two weeks) the
performance has been really dreadful. It routinely drives the load average on
the system to about 1.4 or 1.5, takes up about 90% of a cpu and generally
makes the whole system only marginally useful. I can easily use webmail to
communicate but that's not why IO have Kmail installed. I don't know what bits
are responsible for this behavior and don't know where to start looking. This
seems (as I recall) to have started with the KDE 4.4.0 release and has been
rather sliding since then. I use maildir format mailboxes and there has been
no sudden increase in the number of emails I get or send. If I let kmail alone
for a few hours it gets somewhat better. I suspect an indexing program, I
suppose akonadi? or nepomuk? I seem to have 8 instances of nepomuk running.
Where should I be looking for clues?

Autostart strangeness
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I use qBittorrent for torrent downloads, and since I have a slowish
connection and tend to download large files I want it to be running all
the time while I'm logged in (BTW why do all the BT clients require you
to log in? another "benefit" of GUIs I guess).
Anyway, I configured Autostart to fire up QBT on login, but I also use
"save session" in KDE. Guess what: I get two instances of QBT running.
Now the odd thing is that QBT is a "single instance" app. It's supposed
to detect a running copy and not start another one. However the way it
does this is by looking for a /tmp/qBittorrent-<uid> file. This actually
works. There is a (single) file there when the two instances are
running, and if I try to start a third one from the Shell it quite
rightly refuses.
I disabled the instance in Autostart and re-logged in. Now I get one
instance, and one file in /tmp. So problem solved, but why?
Is it possible that the first (Autostart) instance of QBT creates the
file, and something in the KDE startup sequence deletes it before the
second (saved session) instance fires up? I can't think of another
explanation, but IMHO this is Bad.

VLC opens mysterious second window
by Petrus de Calguarium
vlc-1.1.0-0.6.pre4.fc13.x86_64
I am not sure if this is the right place to post, but as VLC has been coming
from kde-redhat lately, here goes...
When I open VLC, a mysterious second window opens. It is tiny, say about 0.5 cm
wide and 1 cm long and it has the 'X' icon. One can stretch the window and
there is just garbled nothingness inside. Closing VLC also closes this window.
It is somehow tied to VLC. Under VLC View menu, I see docked playlist toggled
on, but toggling it off does not close this window, yet it is somehow tied to
VLC. Closing this window causes plasma to crash.

KDEPIM in SC 4.5, or "who can we piss off the least?"
by Ryan Rix
Hey all
Please see http://thomasmcguire.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/akonadi-meeting-
and-the-kde-sc-4-5-release/
tl;dr: KDEPIM in 4.5.0 won't be ready due to the KMail2 Akonadi port, and
will be shipping in 4.5.1
What does this mean for us? Well, as happened in 4.4.0 days, we're going
to start getting a bunch of our users gearing up for 4.5, and being ultra-
hyper-super-excited to try all the new shinies, especially the kdepim
goodness everyone has been hyping up.
I am kind of thinking that we should put some *real* thought into this
issue, as I'm sure that either way we handle this, there will be much
wailing and gnashing of teeth; on the one hand we have our no-we-want-
centos-style-updates group which will be upset by us pushing 4.5 to
anything but rawhide, and those that will be upset if we -don't-, so I
think we should get out in front of this issue now, rather than Beta or RC
rolls around.
I know that I don't really show up for SIG meetings, due to school, so I
am kind of out of touch on what exactly our plans are for 4.5 or if we
even have any yet. But summer is around the corner (today is my last non-
finals Friday in high school!) so I will begin attending SIG meetings
regularly. I'm willing to own this kdepim issue if only partially, as I am
close to upstream KDEPIM for my GSoC project. I will be assessing KDE
trunk this weekend, and can provide at least a partial report of
regressions in the non-KMail PIM stack.
One option that I see is tearing KMail out of the PIM packages in kde-
redhat/unstable, so we have kdepim 4.5 and kdepim-kmail 4.4. Keeping that
in kde-redhat allows us to hack on it without having to put kdepim-kmail
through review. Of course, that all depends on how well KMail1 interacts
with its akonadi brethren, an issue which tmcguire kind of left in the
open.
I'm wondering a little if 4.5 is a good time to address our updates policy
in general, a time to promote kde-redhat (maybe there is some way we could
promote it more prominently on the SIG page and elsewhere?) and keep our
4.5 updates there until 4.5.1 or even 4.5.2 for stability's sake and to
keep certain factions on the devel list from whinging when they lose
$petfeature, or decide that 150MB of KDE 4.5 is enough to start Yet
Another Thread about, or they decided that Akonadi sucked and disabled it
and oops-where's-my-calendar... That last part is of course written in
jest, but similar things did happen for 4.4, and I think that handling
this far ahead of time is a good way to try to regain some face among the
rest of Fedora, whether we deserved to lose face in 4.4 or not.
Best
Ryan

Empty boxes under KDE popup windows
by Orion Poplawski
Every once in a while with various hardware I see empty boxes left under where
a KDE popup window appeared and went away and the app doesn't redraw right
away. Is there a general bug filed somewhere for this? What is responsible?
Individual video drivers?
Thanks!
