KDE 4.5 libraries problem with Skype
by Manuel Escudero
I have installed Fedora 13 Goddard x86_64 in my machine and I've updated to
KDE 4.5, in order to run Skype I installed some 32 bit Qt libraries and
when I installed the new KDE desktop I had to remove them because KDE 4.4
uses the "1:4.6" version of these libraries and KDE 4.5 the "1:4.7"...
Now I have KDE 4.5 and everything is fine but I can't run lastest Skype
because it needs the "1:4.6" Qt libraries, it doesn't work with the new
ones, but if I remove the new ones and I replace them with
the older ones, many apps seem to be "downgraded" or they just don't work
anymore...
Does this mean we're not having Skype in Fedora 14 KDE Spin as it's going to
be based on KDE 4.5?
Many users need skype (in my case I'm running it in a Windows 7 VM) But
without it we can't offer reliable "Videocalls" as they're not implemented
in IM Clients Linux have.
And please do not start with fanaticism about opensource, as I said in
ambassadors mailing list:
Quoted Mail:
Well, I know about the free alternatives, what I'm discussing here is that
many users USE SKYPE. We have free software but we can't tell those users
who use skype: CANCEL YOUR SKYPE ACCOUNT BECAUSE NOW YOU'RE FREE. We, as
ambassadors, are supposed to help the user and this is an issue that is
going to affect many skype users in fedora 14 KDE unless someone finds a
solution.
Yes, we have free software, but tell me: Any of our free software supports
skype's protocol? The answer is NO. and by "demonizing" skype's use you're
commiting fanaticism... If GNU/LINUX and OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE is what
matters to you, change to UTUTO or GNEWSENSE as Fedora isn't considered
COMPLETELY OPEN SOURCE by the Gnu Foundation.
I'm not gonna continue arguing... I'm open to solutions, not "empty
opinions"
And for me, it's sad that some ambassadors are not thinking in the future of
the user... This is not the way to win "ground" in technologies battle...
End of Quoted mail...
P.S. Sorry for the words in capital letters.
P.S.2: For me, the final user is as important as OpenSource and Fedora :)

digikam 1.4 ?
by Stefan Grosse
Hi,
is there a particular reason why digikam is stuck with version 1.2?
There are plenty of bugfixes in the new version(s). I have seen that
F14 has got a build.
Cheers

A question about sounds from Firefox while reading email
by George R Goffe
Howdy,
When I destroy an email while composing it I get a loud noise. I'm not sure where to look to turn this feature off. Could someone point me in the right direction please? Is it KDE? I'm at 4.4.2. This is a Kubuntu 10.04 system.
Regards and THANKS for the pointer(s) and help,
George...

Kilpper search
by Patrick Boutilier
Anybody else notice that with the 4.5.1 update you can't start typing to
search the clipboard? I almost think it is designed that way because
most of the entries in the clipboard now have a letter underscored and
that entry gets chosen when you type the letter that is underscored.

unnecessary config files and dirs
by Dj YB
Hello,
I have been dragging my home folder since fedora 10 and know that some
problems I got are because of my configuration, few examples
in kscreenlocker all the windows are black rectangles.
akonadi requires restarts frequently to watch kaddressbook records
so I wish to get rid of unnecessary configuration files and folders in my home
folder.
how do I start, how can I know for sure a directory is not being used for
something.
Thanks,
YB.

I've unintentionaly updated kdepim, but I'd give it a try anyway, so no
problem with this.
It took "only" 1.5 hour with migrating dialog, then dialog dissappeared and
akonadi processes were taking over 60 % cpu for another 1.5 hour (I have
nepomuk indexing disabled). Unfortunatelly 1 migration of 10 accounts failed
and it took another 1 hour to fix it:
- I got funny report that it can't connect to server, because my password is
wrong and error was:
"SASL(0): successful result:"
nothing more
- then it allows you to change configuration/password of the account - I've
changed it, but change did not happen at all. I had to change
.kde/share/config/kmailrc by hand and replace imaps:SSL+PLAIN authentication
to imap:STARTTLS+PLAIN
- it required also changing mail server configuration, luckily it was one of
the servers I administer (imap was not allowed there, only imaps)
but now it seems working somehow:
- meesage tags are gone
- emails are not marked as read after displaying - opening configuration re-
checking checkbox fixed this
- number of unread emails in folder list is not changing

How to Set Routes with knetworkmanager and vpnc
by Garry Williams
I have these installed:
knetworkmanager-vpnc-0.9-0.20.20100603.fc13.x86_64
knetworkmanager-0.9-0.20.20100603.fc13.x86_64
knetworkmanager-libs-0.9-0.20.20100603.fc13.x86_64
I have configured my employer's VPN successfully and have no problem
connecting and disconnecting (modulo the persistent bug that crashes
knetworkmanager when manipulating the menu).
I need to define additional routes for this connection. I don't see a
way to specify this. I am currently working around it by manually
adding my routes, e.g,
sudo route add -net <network> netmask <mask> dev tun0
Is there a configuration file I could modify?
