Why does KDE think its fine to ship bugs and how can I stop using the latest release ?
by linux guy
I am a bit disillusioned with team KDE these days.
"Even better than having bugs reported is having bugs fixed, of course.
Which is exactly what's been happening in droves. From multi-screen
fixes to panel hiding fixes to, yes, fixing that on-exit crash, we're
smacking the bugs down as fast as we can so that next month's 4.6.1
release will be beautifully solid."
http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2011/02/if-you-thought-460-was-good.html
I haven't gone into the KDE bug data base, but were these known issues
before they shipped ? And if so, why were they shipped ?
And why is it going to take until next month to fix them ?
I, myself, generally like KDE 4.6.0, but its not entirely stable. As
far as I am concerned, its more beta software than something that should
be used day to day. My specific problem is that Konqueror locks up the
OS solid such that I have to reboot about twice a day. As I have
multiple websites open at once, I am not sure what is triggering it.
Very frustrating.
Is there a way to configure yum such that one's computer is
automagically always running one release behind whatever the current KDE
release is ? Or a way to not upgrade to a .0 release and instead wait
until the .1 release ?
Honestly, I'm reaching the end of my rope with KDE. I like what they
have done but its been a very, very long painful process. The path
that we took to get here would have been a lot less tortuous if they
just would have delayed every release they did by one release. Ie the
quality of KDE's first release is generally very poor. The first
releases should not have shipped to the public.
Thanks for listening.

kmix volume display acts strange
by George Billios
Hello, after installing kde 4.6 - no previous kde installed in my fedora
system - I noticed that the volume OSD acts erratically.
For example, I use my keyboard's volume control key and the volume OSD
sometimes appers, sometimes not, sometimes I turn the volume up and then
down and the volume OSD either follows the change or slowly or does the
opposite!!! In any case the real sound level and kmix icon on taskbar
are properly adjusted/displayed only the OSD is wrong.
I have also removed the config files from ~/.kde/share/config but the
problem remains. Any ideas?
thanks

F14 Kmail: IMAPS protocol died unexpectedly
by Armelius Cameron
Hello,
I have my Kmail (inside Kontact) setup to check secure IMAP on my personal
server. The server runs dovecot on RHEL 4. The client is F14 with all updates
(as of yesterday) on my laptop.
Whenever Kmail tries to check email, I get the dialog box: IMAPs protocol died
unexpectedly. This happens almost everytime, but it seems that where it dies
is somewhat random. So sometimes I can check new email, sometime not, and only
partial list of my old email appear. Furthermore, some of the email show up
with Subject / Author / Date: Unknown / Unknown / Unknown in the message list,
although if I click on it the contenct of the email (with the correct subject,
etc) is there and I can see it on the Message Window.
I am not sure how to debug this problem. The Kmail side is certainly not
helpful because it doesn't show other information. On the server log, I just
see something like: client disconnected.
My server setup has been working before as long as I can remember with
previous version of Fedora / KDE / Kmail. In fact I have another machine that
still runs F12 and it works fine there. This F14 laptop that's having problem
also used to work before with F12 (I just did a clean install last week, with
clean KDE config). On the F14 laptop, Thunderbird works fine with the same
server. So it seems that the problem is with KDE / Kmail that comes with F14.
Any help on how should I troubleshooot this ?
Thanks.

Strange Copy/Paste behavior in KMail 1.13.5/Kontact 4.4.8
by Steven P. Ulrick
Hello Everyone,
I am using KMail 1.13.5 from within Kontact 4.4.8. Also, I am running Fedora 13
and KDE 4.5.4. All of this is fully updated.
I don't know when this problem started, but when I copy something like this from
any email in KMail:
No. Why do you need the "full-install" DVD?
and paste it into any text editor, it comes out like this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>No. Why do you need the "full-install" DVD?</body>
If I want to copy and paste a tracking number for an item that I purchased
online, it looks like this when I paste it:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>9101128882300487354725</body>
In the above example, this is the procedure I followed:
1. Using my mouse, I select "9101128882300487354725" in the desired email.
2. Right click the mouse, and then select "Copy"
3. Then, I either do "Ctrl V" or "Right Click | Paste"
4. The result is always the same. I get the text that I selected, plus a whole
lot HTML markup...
I have KMail set to compose and send emails in text only.
In my experiments so far, this only occurs when I copy FROM KMail. If I copy
from any other application, and paste INTO KMail, it pastes correctly. Also,
when I select and then copy "9101128882300487354725" FROM KMAIL, and then check
my clipboard, it shows up in the undesired format:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "DTD/xhtml1-
strict.dtd">
<body>9101128882300487354725</body>
As far as I know, I didn't change anything to cause this problem to occur. I do
know that up until a few weeks ago, on this same system, if (from within KMail)
I selected and copied something like "9101128882300487354725" and then pasted
the result into any application, I would get this:
"9101128882300487354725"
That is how it has always worked for me, and that is NOT how it's working for me
now :(
Your help is greatly appreciated.

In need of a favor
by Eli Wapniarski
Hi all
I'm in need of a favor by anyone still using 4.5x. The plasmoid kde-plasma-
ihatethe cashew in stable does not work with kde 4.6. A patch has been
submitted and consequently I have built new packages with that patch. It works
great in 4.6, but before I push to fedora testing, I would like to know that
it works in 4.5x
I, of course am using 4.6 :), and I do not have a 4.5 environemnt If somebody
still running 4.5x would be so kind as to test and report back here I would be
quite grateful.
The binaries can be found at:

rsync causing disk sleeps and loss of apps
by Anne Wilson
I'm trying to get rsync to operate on a number of directories, but not in a
mirror situation where I can easily use an existing app. I therefore wanted
to set up a shell script which can be run over the network using keychain to
provide the necessary passwords. On a single box it works perfectly, but of
course the network makes it more complicated.
Part of the problem may be that I have followed too many how-tos, and set
things up in a way that fight. First, to get keychain correctly running -
Keychain is set up in .bash_profile and works. Then I read that if you are
going to run a script with cron you need to eval keychain within your script
as it works in its own restricted environment. This makes sense - but does
that cause problems when I run tests in bash, since keychain is already
running?
What happens at the moment is that the script appears to start, but suddenly
stops. System Monitor shows disk sleep for all the rsync threads, and several
kde applications are also affected, notibly kwrite etc and dolphin etc..
To get out of the problem I have killed everything I can find related to those
apps, but I still end up with having to restart the computer. Logging out
isn't enough - even if I can. Sometimes it won't accept logout or even
shutdown, and have to power off. Probably that's when I've tried too long to
cure it.
I desperately need some more experienced insight as to what is happening here.

KMail archive
by Timothy Murphy
I keep my email on a CentOS server, in ~/Maildir/ .
I run dovecot/IMAP on the server,
so that I can read the email on various Fedora laptops.
I want to off-load some email folders containing old email,
eg In-05, Out-05, etc, perhaps to a directory ~/Archive/ .
a) What is the best way to do this?
Would simply mv-ing ~/Maildir/.In-05 to ~/Archive/ confuse dovecot?
b) If I then want to read the old email in ~/Archive/
how can I do this with KMail?
Any suggestions or advice gratefully received.
