Kontact - is anybody using this?
by Timothy Murphy
As far as I can see, Kontact/Kaddressbook is not working,
contacts that are entered do not seem to be available
either in Kaddressbook or in KMail.
I entered a kaddressbook bug in the KDE bugzilla,
but as far as I can see several serious, even fatal, bugs
seem to have been left unanswered for months if not years.

KMail and KAddressBook
by Timothy Murphy
Does anybody understand, and use, KAddressBook with KMail?
I find KAddressBook completely incomprehensible.
Eg
1. I have entered Anne Murphy as a new contact.
I know it is there, because I see it if I Export
my address book in CSV format.
But I don't see it if I search for Anne, or Murphy.
In fact I am unable to see any contacts in my address book.
I read in the KAddressBook handbook:
"We can expect to see the data becoming visible again
in the coming version releases."
Is that my problem?
What exactly is the point of invisible data?
2. If I start a new message in KMail,
and start to enter the To name,
I never get auto-completion from the address book.
Have I not set up my address book properly?
Or is there some initial step I am supposed to take?

Migrating user accounts from F14 to F17
by Temlakos
Everyone:
I hadn't been paying close enough attention, obviously. Turns out that
sometime between F14 and F17, user accounts are supposed to have UIDs of
1000 or higher. But all mine were in the 500s.
Now, I created them all right. I gave them legitimate Unix names. I can
even make Samba users out of some of them. But I can't see them in the
Users and Groups section. Nor could I make them admins in the "Create
User" dialog. I had to create another user, a dummy user, just to have
someone with admin privileges.
What is the most elegant solution? Must I create all new accounts and
migrate the contents of my home directories from one user to another?
(And do a recursive chown on all of them as I work?) Or is there another
way to achieve the goal of having user accounts with decent UIDs? (Short
of setting up another box, that is. And even that is problematic: I
can't seem to get Samba to work properly as a server, though I made it
work well enough as a client.)

KMail starts offline after update to kde-4.9.1.fc17
by Martin Kho
Hi,
In kde-4.8.x akonadi agents were launched at log in (before kmail was
started). I always got a kwallet request from the akonadi IMAP agent. When
KMail was started it immediatly synced with the imap-server.
Now the agents are started when KMail is started. KMail runs in offline mode.
I've to click a mail entry to sync with the imap-server.
Anyone else sees this - new intended? - behaviour. Is there an option to tell
KMail to start in online mode? Has it something to with bug [1]?
Thanks,
Martin Kho
Btw in fc18 - kde 4.9.2 - I have the 4.8.x behaviour.

File lnusertemp issue
by Temlakos
Everyone:
Just did a clean install to Fedora 17 (x86_64 architecture) and KDE 4.
I used the Users and Groups app. (authenticating with the root password)
to create two new users to hook in with two directories on /home (from
the previous installation).
But when I try to log into either one, I get this:
call to lnusertemp failed (/Temporary directories full?)
But then when I try to execute lnusertemp manually, I can't find it. It
seems never to have gotten installed.
What happened?

Nonlocal files in the Amarok music collection
by Marko Vojinovic
Hi everyone! :-)
I have already asked this on the fedora list, but since Amarok is essentially
a KDE product, maybe I can find an answer on this list... :-)
What I want is to build a music collection database in Amarok, where music is
not on the local hard drive, but on a remote http server. In other words, I
want to put entries like "http://www.server.com/file.mp3" into my Amarok
collection (so that I can build playlists, play the files, and so on).
I do not want to implement an audio streaming service (like ampache) on the
server side, I just want remote file entries in the local client database.
Is this possible to do in Amarok? If yes, how? If not, why not? Would you
consider it a useful feature?
The point is that I want to keep the music files off the local hard disk.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. :-)
Best. :-)

KDE 4.9 / rename online inline possible *grrr*
by Reindl Harald
someobdy may create a file and test to rename it in the
way put date/time at the begin
"this-is-a-really-dmaned-long-filename-2012_10_04_20_09.txt"
how can anybody imagine that this has a better usability
in a inline-input where you have to scroll left/right
before 4.9 there was a option for konqueror to restore the
old behavior, folderview did ignore it and was unuseable
for folderview this becomes even worser than for konqueror
because you have filenames over multiple lines because
the lack of a list-view
______________
MANY YEARS I LAUGHED ABOUT WINDOWS
why? because they had a inline rename while the kde way
was so much more user friendly to see now that kde goes
the same unuseable way :-(

4.9.2 thanks!
by Colin J Thomson
Hi,
Updated to 4.9.2 Monday and as usual a smooth and trouble free update, two of
my "third party" plasmoids stopped working but then a new set of updates fixed
this.
Nice to see the dolphin panel patch has made it in,
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301959
However I am still suffering from this bug Korganizer systray bug, can you
confirm the patch was included with these early testing packages, before I go
and comment on the bug report.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=304594
Thanks again
Colin

Where is the desktop that windows initiate in specified?
by Lester M Petrie
The subject pretty much covers it. Ever since I have updated to KDE 4.9.1,
Fedora 17, all my startup programs come up in desktop 2. The only way I have
found to make them start in desktop 1 is to only have 1 desktop. If I start
with only 1 desktop, then expand to 4, they will stay in 1 until I log off,
but when I log back in, they start in desktop 2 again.
