I currently use t-bird with an nntp account pointing to gmane to read
this list and sereral others. Does kde have an nntp client program of
any sort? I don't see it as a possible new account type in kmail. Also,
search with kpackagekit yields nothing with "usenet" or "nntp" that is
I just found out that Kate was not installed by default on Fedora 16
even though I had selected 'KDE Software Development' during
installation. KDevelop is installed, but not Kate.
Was this a concious decision or a mistake?
I'm trying to set up qbittorrent to handle magnet: links. I've searched
high and low in KDE Settings to no avail. Note that these links don't
usually have a distinguishing file extension. Instead they're flagged as
magnet:... in the URL.
I use Google Chrome, which is a GTK-oriented browser, so I also tried
using gconf-editor to set this up. However the setting is completely
ignored (the default is set to use transmission, but in fact clicking on
a magnet link always fires up Ktorrent, which I don't want), so that
seems to be out.
I've also tried messing with the Chrome text config files, which are
undocumented and obscure. The built-in Chrome settings widget is no help
In short, I don't know if I'm in the right part of the forest. In fact
I'm not sure I'm even in the right forest.
Why is this stuff so hard?
If I hook up a projector, it seems I get best results by choosing the default
config (twinview, with projector on right). This is using nvidia driver.
Having done this, my panel then jumps onto the right screen (the projector). Is
there some way to avoid this? (Turning off the projector, my panel is now gone,
which can be annoying).
I'm running 64 bit Fedora 16 (All up to date) and gstreamer backend. Now
the problem is:
I was having no issues with sound whatsoever. But few days back I
plugged in an USB headphone. That thing got proper sound and all but now
I can't hear anything with it plugged in.
I tried changing the order of the sound card (Internal, Manhattan,USB
Audio) & looked into ALSA Mixer. But I just can't hear anything.
And is there anyway to playback via XINE rather than gstreamer? I'm
running KDE here.

How can I change the mode of syntax highlighting that kate does for a
file extension of .pro? I read the section on syntax highlighting in the
kate handbook but am none the wiser.
kde 4.8.1 (on F16) recognises files with extension .pro, for syntax
highlighting purposes, as qmake files. This is shown by a checked radio
button under in tools/highlighting/other/QMake when editing a file with
this extension. Also, tools/mode/other/QMake is checked.
I'd like to make kate activate tools/highlighting/sources/RSIIDL for
syntax highlighting automatically for the .pro file extension instead
since this file type is used by the Interactive Data Language (now owned
by Excelis, but formerly by RSI, hence RSIIDL, to avoid a conflict with
IDL the Interface Definition Language) for its language source files.
I'd like to be able to make this change on a system-wide basis.
Thanks for any pointers anyone can give.
I am always curious why copying file in Dolphin is always so much slower than
just using command line. For example, for convenient I have an entry in my
Dolphin to access my remote server via fish://username@servername.
If I try to copy file from my local machine to the remove server, it shows
transfer speed initially at 1.3Mib/s, and sometimes it drops to only hundreds
of kb/s. When I try using scp, I get over 11MB/s, which makes sense since I'm
on the Gbit LAN.
Annectodally I've seen similar thing when copying large file over different disk
partition or to external drive via dolphin or just command line 'cp'; cp is
always faster. But I like to convenient of Dolphin so for smaller file size
this is tolerable. But I'm curious still of the big performance difference.
By some miracle we've managed to get Fedora 17 Beta RC1 out almost on
As always, we need to do the desktop validation for it. See the desktop
And please, if you can, help us to fill in the results for your
desktops. Desktop team, I know we didn't get 3.3.92 into Beta and sorry
about that, but we do need to check it passes the validation tests - the
ones for Beta aren't too difficult and shouldn't take long to do, so if
you can help that'd be great.
I have done a smoke test on all four desktops; they all boot okay to a
sane looking desktop and successfully install to hard disk and boot from
hard disk, so they're all clearly testable, not DOA.

This starts happening after upgrading to KDE 4.8.1. I constantly see
virtuoso_t using high CPU (~99%), and my laptop fan is constantly running at
Google search landed me on this page:
So I tried closing kontact, then 'akonadictl stop', and virtuoso_t process is
gone from 'top'. When I start akonadi and Kontact, it's back.
I checked krunner config page as suggested, but I don't see those services as
enabled in my plugins. I tried reboot, re-login, etc and virtuoso_t keeps
Any help is appreciated.
